Ultrasound model of depression in rodents: A comprehensive analysis of validity, pathogenic mechanisms, and potential for translation to humans.

Depression poses a major global health challenge, highlighting the urgent need for valid animal models to elucidate its pathogenesis and develop novel treatments. This review offers a comprehensive characterization and validation of an original rodent model of depression induced by chronic exposure to variable-frequency ultrasound (20-45 kHz), termed the ultrasound model (US-model). We hypothesize that this model uniquely recapitulates a state of "information uncertainty", providing a highly relevant framework for studying depression amid modern urban environments. Based on extensive experimen

Effects of a mega wildfire on small mammals and ticks in a boreal forest in Sweden.

Ticks transmit pathogens among wildlife and humans, with small mammals acting as key reservoirs. Climate change may increase disease risk through expanding tick distributions and more frequent wildfires, which alter habitat conditions, influencing small mammal communities and tick populations. In 2014, the Sala Fire burned 131 km² of boreal forest in south-central Sweden. Fire intensity, winter conditions, and proximity to water may influence survival of small mammals and ticks. This study investigated the effects of a mega-fire on the dynamics of tick and small mammal populations, focusing on

Refining animal care through technology: Addressing alopecia in Jaculus jaculus with validated computer vision analysis.

We validated the use of an open-source computer vision toolkit to analyze high-quality behavioral data and evaluate welfare in the Lesser Egyptian Jerboa (Jaculus jaculus). Movements of these small, nocturnal rodents are rapid and difficult to observe, potentially obscuring behavioral assessment. However, assessment became warranted when alopecia and jumping were noted. We compared trained human observers to machine learning trained computer vision algorithms, evaluating accuracy and precision in behavioral classification. Human observers categorized behaviors with an overall accuracy of 0.71

Insights and implications from a comparative analysis of in vitro fertilization success in Cavioidea and Muroidea rodents.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproduction technique widely used due to its capacity to generate more offspring within a brief timeframe while simultaneously providing fundamental physiological data through gamete interactions. However, its suboptimal development in most species is challenging when IVF is applied to rodents. Despite numerous studies focusing on the Cavioidea and Muroidea superfamilies, some species struggle to achieve satisfactory cleavage rates, whereas others obtain over 90% efficiency with live offspring. Efforts to enhance these rates include adopting methodo

To intubate or not? Balancing anesthesia in rodent fMRI: strategies to mitigate confounding effects.

More than a decade ago, the introduction of intubation and mechanical ventilation for performing blood oxygen level-dependent functional MRI studies in the rodent brain allowed an improved control over the physiological conditions during scanning sessions. An accurate understanding of respiratory parameters permits to respect the 3Rs in animal research, improves significantly the fMRI outcome, and promises improved translational studies. Developments also prompted a better comprehension on anesthetics and their impact on rodent brain physiology and function, bringing new insights on the buildu

Animal Models of Excessive Alcohol Consumption in Rodents.

The development of animal models that demonstrate excessive levels of alcohol consumption has played an important role in advancing our knowledge about neurobiological underpinnings and environmental circumstances that engender such maladaptive behavior. The use of these preclinical models has also provided valuable opportunities for discovering new and novel therapeutic targets that may be useful in the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD). While no single model can fully capture the complexities of AUD, the goal is to develop animal models that closely approximate characteristics of heavy

The first phylogenetic reconstruction of Nippostrongylinae (Nematoda: Heligmonellidae) reveals 3 new genera, the polyphyletic nature of Carolinensis and Vexillata, and identifies 5 clades with varying associations with mammals.

The Nippostrongylinae is a group of strongylid nematodes that includes species typically associated with coprophagous mammals; in the New World, it is represented by 82 species within 11 genera. Two main morphological features, the synlophe and the caudal bursa, are used to evaluate the characteristics that allow identification and classification of the organisms in the taxon. However, the analysis of these characters often requires a partial or total destruction of specimens and therefore morphological variation is studied in only a very small subset of organisms per species. To evaluate the

Zoonotic microorganisms in native and exotic invasive urban small mammals of bamako, Mali.

The increase in the incidence of zoonoses underlines the need for monitoring pathogens in wild animals. Recent studies have revealed the circulation of several microorganisms in rodents, in various geographic and environmental contexts, including African urban habitats. However, Mali, a landlocked country of West Africa, was not extensively studied for the circulation of the microorganisms in rodents. And this paucity of information puts the fight against rodent-borne zoonoses at a disadvantage. This is why we aimed through this study to improve knowledge of potentially zoonotic infectious age

First Morphological Identification of Eimeria spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. in Different Wild Rodent Species from Central and Northwest Iran.

OBJECTIVE: Wild rodents act as important hosts and reservoirs for both zoonotic and non-zoonotic pathogens, playing a key role in maintaining and transmitting infectious agents in nature. Their presence can lead to contamination of food and water sources, affecting both humans and animals. METHODS: This study examined 138 dead rodents from six species (Microtus socialis, Rattus norvegicus, Mus musculus, Meriones libycus, Apodemus witherbyi, and Ellobius lutescens) collected from three regions in Iran. Fecal samples were analyzed for Eimeria spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. using potassium dichro

Research progress in rodent models of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a common and frequent disease in gynecology; its etiology and pathogenesis are partially understood and still not clear. The construction of suitable animal models is beneficial for basic research related to the disease. Currently, rodents have the advantages of low cost, fast reproduction, easy rearing, and a similar endometrial structure to humans. Depending on the purpose of the experiment, different molding methods have their advantages. In this paper, we describe the traditional methods of constructing endometriosis rodent models, compare their advantages and disadvantage

Organization of Somatosensory Cortex in the South American Rodent Paca (Cuniculus paca).

INTRODUCTION: The study of non-laboratory species has been part of a broader effort to establish the basic organization of the mammalian neocortex, as these species may provide unique insights relevant to cortical organization, function, and evolution. METHODS: In the present study, the organization of three somatosensory cortical areas of the medium-sized (5-11 kg body mass) Amazonian rodent, the paca (Cuniculus paca), was determined using a combination of electrophysiological microelectrode mapping and histochemical techniques (cytochrome oxidase and NADPH diaphorase) in tangential sections

Improved molecular identification of Strongyloides myopotami in nutrias using fecal samples.

Strongyloides myopotami is an intestinal nematode parasite of nutrias. Identification of S. myopotami is conducted based on the morphological characteristics of adult worms or cultured larvae. To widely and effectively understand the infection in nutrias, it would be preferable to develop the molecular identification using a few grams of the feces. Here, we attempted to identify S. myopotami using DNA extracted from eggs obtained from fecal samples. Among previously reported primer pairs targeting the 18S rRNA gene of Strongyloides spp., most could not be successful. We newly designed primers

Homeobox gene-encoded transcription factors in development and mature circadian function of the rodent pineal gland.

Homeobox genes encode transcription factors that are widely known to control developmental processes. This is also the case in the pineal gland, a neuroendocrine brain structure devoted to nighttime synthesis of the hormone melatonin. Thus, in accordance with high prenatal gene expression, knockout studies have identified a specific set of homeobox genes that are essential for development of the pineal gland. However, as a special feature of the pineal gland, homeobox gene expression persists into adulthood, and gene product abundance exhibits 24 h circadian rhythms. Recent lines of evidence s

Neural substrates for regulating self-grooming behavior in rodents.

Grooming, as an evolutionarily conserved repetitive behavior, is common in various animals, including humans, and serves essential functions including, but not limited to, hygiene maintenance, thermoregulation, de-arousal, stress reduction, and social behaviors. In rodents, grooming involves a patterned and sequenced structure, known as the syntactic chain with four phases that comprise repeated stereotyped movements happening in a cephalocaudal progression style, beginning from the nose to the face, to the head, and finally ending with body licking. The context-dependent occurrence of groomin

Modeling impaired insight after drug use in rodents.

Impaired insight in substance use disorder has been argued to reflect a global deficit in using cognitive models to mentally simulate possible future outcomes. The process of mentally simulating outcomes allows us to understand our beliefs about their causes, that is, to have insight and thereby avoid potentially negative outcomes. However, work in humans cannot address whether impaired insight and its neural/neurochemical sequalae are present prior to the development of a substance use disorder, a consequence of substance use, or a combination of both. This is because baseline measurements pr

The A2 haplotype of Echinococcus multilocularis is the predominant variant infecting humans and dogs in Yili Prefecture, Xinjiang.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, is an important zoonotic disease. Yili Prefecture in Xinjiang is endemic for AE, however the molecular variability of E. multilocularis in this region is poorly understood. In this study, 127 samples were used for haplotypes analysis, including 79 tissues from humans, 43 liver tissues from small rodents, and 5 fecal samples from dogs. Genetic variability in E. multilocularis was studied using complete sequences of the mitochondrial (mt) genes of cytochrome b (cob), NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (nad2), and cytochrome c oxidase

Zoonotic importance of ecto- and endoparasites in rodents in Malaysia: a review.

IMPORTANCE: Rodents, particularly those inhabiting urban areas, are sources of infections that cause major human diseases. The number of recorded zoonotic infections has increased in recent decades, exacerbating public concerns. Zoonotic diseases in humans, such as capillariasis, hymenolepiasis, and toxoplasmosis, are life-threatening in severe cases, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. A thorough understanding of pathogens, particularly the parasites infecting rodents, is critical for predicting future zoonotic disease outbreaks and developing effective mitigation strategies. This
