During a four month period 851 patients presented to the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Trauma Unit with an acute sporting injury. Eighteen (2%) patients had either a soft tissue or bony mallet deformity. Six different sports were identified with rugby accounting for eight of the 18 mallet deformities. All patients were treated with splintage. Fourteen patients returned questionnaires regarding subjective digit function following treatment and nine patients claimed excellent function. BACKGROUND: We report three patients (respectively 36, 52 and 52 years old) with a long history of hidradenitis suppurativa associated with pubic lymph oedema.
CASE REPORT: Dramatic pubic oedema was noted, with "rugby-ball and bag-like" tumefaction associated with nodules and fistula. There was no evidence of lymph node involvement or abdominal lymphatic blockade. One patient underwent surgical excision combined with split-thickness graft and complete healing ensued. Pathological examination of the excised tissue showed telangiectasia and fibrosis.

This retrospective study was conducted in a state hospital set-up and aimed at identifying the incidence of sports-related shoulder dislocat … ions. Recurrent dislocation constitutes 78% of the cases with an average of 3 times re-dislocation. Rugby and badminton were the major contributors to the injuries followed by volleyball, soccer and swimming. Conservative treatment was successfully instituted for 88% of the patients and 12% opted for surgical intervention.

Four Japanese male students, aged 14, 16, 18 and 19, were found to have a nodule in their coccygeal regions. Human bites to the ear are not an uncommon injury as a consequence of brawls or even contact sports like rugby. Untreated, the cosmetic outcome of such injury is unsightly. This case history documents how a patient, who had two-thirds of his external ear bitten off, was treated successfully by replacing the part as a composite graft. The segment replanted was minimally trimmed but inset to allow maximal soft tissue apposition at the skin edges. An episode of postoperative venous congestion was treated with leeches.
