Molecular uncovering of important helminth species in wild ruminants in the Czech Republic.

Monitoring gastrointestinal helminth infections in wild ruminants poses significant challenges for managing wildlife health, particularly regarding invasive species. Traditional coprological methods are often limited by their labor-intensive nature and potential for erroneous identification due to morphological similarities among parasite species. This study employed advanced molecular techniques to assess the prevalence and distribution of several helminth taxa, including the invasive nematode Ashworthius sidemi and the trematode Fascioloides magna, in wild ruminant populations in the Czech R…

Detection and genotypes of piroplasms affecting ruminants in the New Valley Governorate, Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Piroplasms, which include the two genera Babesia and Theileria, are protozoan parasites transmitted by Ixodid ticks that infect the erythrocytes of vertebrate hosts, including humans, domestic animals, and wild animals. The present study examined how common and distinct genotypes of the above tick-borne parasites are in the New Valley Governorate in Egypt, which covers 440,098 km². MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was conducted on 321 randomly selected live animals (89 cattle, 55 goats, and 177 sheep), regardless of sex and age. Of these, 203 were found to be infested with ticks, and 269

Genomic characterization of peste des petits ruminants vaccine seed "45G37/35-k", Russia.

Production of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) vaccines in Russia is based on two attenuated virus strains ("45G37/35-k" and "ARRIAH") of common origin. Here, the identity of the strain PPRV/45G37/35-k was investigated using a full genome, Illumina deep sequencing approach. Phylogenomic analysis showed that PPRV/45G37/35-k belongs to the same lineage as the widely used PPRV vaccine strain Nigeria/75/1 (lineage II). However, 248 nucleotide differences separate the genomes of these vaccine strains, indicating that the PPRV vaccine strains produced in Russia are new strains not yet recognised by …

Characterization of recombinant Ybgf protein for the detection of Coxiella antibodies in ruminants.

Q fever remains a One Health problem, posing a zoonotic threat and causing significant economic losses to the livestock industry. The advancement of detection tools is critical to the effective control of infection. In humans, laboratory investigations depend largely on the immunofluorescence assay, considered the gold standard. In contrast, serologic tools routinely used for veterinary screening have several gaps, resulting in interpretations that are frequently misleading. We investigated the potential application of recombinant Ybgf antigen (r-Ybgf), a periplasmic protein described as one o

Listeria innocua isolated from diseased ruminants harbour minor virulence genes of L. monocytogenes.

Listeriosis is one of the most common nervous diseases in ruminants, and is caused almost exclusively by the Gram-positive bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes. However, there are few reports of listeriosis associated with L. innocua, which is genetically closely related to L. monocytogenes, but considered non-pathogenic. In this work, we report two cases of suppurative meningoencephalitis in apparently previously healthy ruminants from different farms, in which two strains of L. innocua were recovered. The whole genomes from both isolates were sequenced, allowing phylogenetic analyses to be perf…

Helminths, hosts, and their microbiota: new avenues for managing gastrointestinal helminthiases in ruminants.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence is emerging of complex interactions occurring between gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of ruminants and the resident gut flora, with likely implications for the pathophysiology of worm infection and disease. Similarly, recent data point toward the occurrence of a GI nematode (GIN)-specific microbiota, with potential roles in worm fundamental physiology and reproduction. Parasite-microbiota relationships might represent potential targets for the development of novel parasiticides. AREAS COVERED: In this article, we review current knowledge of the role(s) that host- and he…

Systematic Review of Ticks and Tick-Borne Pathogens of Small Ruminants in Pakistan.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDis) are a major constraint to the health and production of small ruminants in Pakistan. Despite being the subject of intermittent studies over the past few decades, comprehensive information on the epidemiology and control of TTBDis is lacking. Herein, we have systematically reviewed the current knowledge on TTBDis of small ruminants in Pakistan. Critical appraisal of the selected 71 articles published between 1947 to 2020 revealed that morphological examination had been the most widely used method for the identification of TTBDis in Pakistan. Tick fauna comp…
