Clinical remission of a treatment-refractory individual with severe repetitive rituals and rumination.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a severe chronic mental disorder and tends to be refractory to pharmacotherapy or psychotherapy. For treatment-refractory patients, neurosurgical interventions are options. 64 % of OCD patients who undergo neurosurgery still have greater than 16 in the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) after a long-term follow-up. Here, we reported a patient living with long-term OCD (20 years) who was refractory to pharmacotherapy, mindfulness-based psychotherapy, and neurosurgery that injured his bilateral anterior cingulates (AC) and caudate nu

The bidirectional associations between state anger and rumination and the role of trait mindfulness.

Rumination is associated with exacerbated angry mood. Angry moods may also trigger rumination. However, research has not empirically tested the bidirectional associations of state rumination and anger, as experience sampling methodology can do. We predicted that state anger and rumination would be bi-directionally associated, both concurrently and over time, even controlling for trait anger and rumination. In addition, because mindfulness is associated with rumination and anger at the bivariate level, we examined the effect of trait mindfulness on the bidirectional association between state ru

The association between personality traits, cognitive reactivity and body mass index is dependent on depressive and/or anxiety status.

OBJECTIVE: A range of biological, social and psychological factors, including depression and anxiety disorders, is thought to be associated with higher body mass index (BMI). Depression and anxiety disorders are associated with specific psychological vulnerabilities, like personality traits and cognitive reactivity, that may also be associated with BMI. The relationship between those psychological vulnerabilities and BMI is possibly different in people with and without depression and anxiety disorders. Therefore, we examined the relationship between personality traits, cognitive reactivity and

Mechanics of Mindfulness: Investigating Metacognitive Beliefs as a Pathway of Effect on Anxiety and Depression.

This study aimed to address the dearth of literature on mechanisms of effect of mindfulness-based interventions by investigating metacognitive beliefs as a potential mechanism of symptomology-reduction effects. The Cognitive Attentional Syndrome (CAS) component of the Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model was augmented to include subtypes of mind wandering and rumination. One hundred and seventy-eight participants sourced from professional networks (Mage = 53.13; SD = 11.80) completed an online questionnaire measuring dispositional mindfulness, metacognitive beliefs, rumination, min

Relationship Between Negative Life Events and Depressive Symptoms for Chinese College Students: The Mediating Role of Rumination and Moderating Role of Perceived Social Support and Psychological Capital.

OBJECTIVE: External events affect individuals through their cognitive process, a model on how and when negative life events are associated with depressive symptoms was tested by considering individuals' internal and external factors based on the conservation of resource theory (COR). METHODS: We conducted a survey to test our hypotheses. Participants were college students who were selected with the cluster sampling method and were asked to complete the scales measuring negative life events, perceived social support, psychological capital (PsyCap), rumination, and depressive symptoms in the cl

Mindfulness and nocturnal rumination are independently associated with symptoms of insomnia and depression during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia and depression are highly prevalent perinatal complications. Ruminating on stress is etiologically implicated in both disorders, and ruminating while trying to fall asleep has been linked to insomnia and depression during pregnancy. Incompatible with rumination is everyday mindfulness, i.e., living with intentional and nonjudgmental awareness of internal and external experiences in the present moment. Responding to stress mindfully may protect against stress-related perinatal complications such as insomnia and depression. The present study described the association between

Exploring Social Media Rumination: Associations With Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Distress.

In this study, we examined students' perceptions of peer aggression occurring within their school environment and how these perceptions are interconnected with both social media rumination and distress. Social media usage is associated with a range of negative mental health and interpersonal outcomes for adolescents. Social media use can increase youth's vulnerability to peer victimization and psychosocial difficulties. In addition, ruminating when sad or stressed has been linked to elevated distress for youth experiencing peer aggression. Yet rumination specifically regarding social media act

Rumination and problematic substance use among individuals with a long-term history of illicit drug use.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is a cognitive process that is implicated in the development and maintenance of various forms of psychopathology, including problematic substance use. Most studies on the role of rumination in substance use have been conducted among community samples or individuals with alcohol use disorders and have predominately focused on overall rumination rather than differentiating between its subtypes, ruminative brooding and ruminative reflection. The current study therefore aimed to investigate i) whether rumination subtypes are associated with problematic substance use among pe

Ruminative response style is associated with a negative bias in the perception of emotional facial expressions in healthy women without a history of clinical depression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination has been shown to be an important cognitive vulnerability factor affecting development and maintenance of depression. Ruminative thinking can be divided into a self-focused component referring to persistent reflection about causes and consequences of depressed mood and a symptom-focused component characterized by repetitive thinking about depressive symptoms. Previous research on clinical depression has shown that rumination is associated with the perception of negative emotions in others' facial expressions. The present study was conducted to investigate

Work stressors and impaired sleep: rumination as a mediator.

An association between stress at work and impaired sleep is theoretically plausible and supported by empirical evidence. The current study's main aim was to investigate how the influence of stressors is carried over into the evening and the night. We assume that this relationship is mediated by perseverative cognitions. We tested this assumption in two cross-sectional samples with structural equation modeling, using bootstrapped standard errors to test for significance. Effort–reward imbalance and time pressure were used as stressors, and rumination as a measure for perseverative cognitions. R

Rumination and "hot" executive function of middle school students during the COVID-19 pandemic: A moderated mediation model of depression and mindfulness.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of COVID-19 had a widely negative effect on adolescents' academics, stress, and mental health. At a critical period of cortical development, adolescents' cognition levels are highly developed, while the ability of emotion control is not developed at the same pace. Faced with negative emotions such as stress and social loneliness caused by COVID-19, adolescents' "hot" executive function encounters severer emotional regulation challenges than ever before. OBJECTIVE: The present study established a moderated mediation model to investigate the impact of rumination on "hot

Frogs' Legs Versus Roast Beef: How Culture Can Influence Mind-Wandering Episodes Across the Lifespan.

Numerous studies have captured the nature of mind-wandering and how it changes across the lifespan; however, the influence of culture has been neglected. This study investigated the joint effects of culture and age in a large scale online questionnaire-based survey of 308 adults over 18 years of age, both in France and the United Kingdom. To capture a profile of thinking style, self-report measures of mind-wandering frequency, mindfulness, mood, rumination, self-reflection, future thinking, depressive symptoms, and cognitive failures were gathered. Findings revealed an earlier decrease in mind

Depressive Symptoms, Rumination, and Emotion Reactivity Among Youth: Moderation by Gender.

The emotion context-insensitivity hypothesis (ECI; Rottenberg et al., 2005) posits that depressive symptoms are associated with blunted emotional reactivity and is supported by the results of a meta-analysis (Bylsma et al., 2008). Yet it remains unclear how strongly ECI holds across emotional response domains, whether ECI operates similarly in male and female individuals, and whether this pattern of underreactivity is observed in youth. In contrast, rumination, a cognitive style strongly associated with depressive symptoms, may be associated with heightened reactivity. We assessed the effects

The impact of ruminative processing on the experience of self-referent intrusive memories in dysphoria.

The current study sought to experimentally assess the differential effects of analytical ruminative processing and distraction on the experience of self-referent naturally occurring intrusive memories in a sample of dysphoric (BDI-II > or = 12) participants. Seventy-seven undergraduate participants completed a memory interview to elicit details about a self-referential intrusion and were randomly assigned to either an analytical rumination or distraction condition. Subsequent to the rumination induction, participants rated their intrusive memory as more negative, more distressing, and more evo

The impact of cyberbullying victimization on social anxiety among college students: the chain mediating roles of fear of negative evaluation and rumination.

OBJECTIVE: Based on the Clark and Wells cognitive model of social anxiety, this study constructed a chain mediation model to explore the potential mechanisms underlying the association between cyberbullying victimization and social anxiety among college students. METHODS: A total of 3,710 college students were surveyed with the Cyberbullying Victimization Scale, the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, the Ruminative Responses Scale, and the Interaction Anxiousness Scale; after data screening, 3,625 valid responses were analyzed. RESULTS: (1) Significant positive correlations were found

Hippocampal subfield volume in older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment: Effects of worry and cognitive reappraisal.

Studies have confirmed that anxiety, especially worry and rumination, are associated with increased risk for cognitive decline, including Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Hippocampal atrophy is a hallmark of ADRD. We investigated the association between hippocampus and its subfield volumes and late-life global anxiety, worry, and rumination, and emotion regulation strategies. We recruited 110 participants with varying worry severity who underwent magnetic resonance imaging and clinical interviews. We conducted cross-sectional regression analysis between each subfield and anxie

Event centrality and post-traumatic stress symptoms among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic: the roles of attention to negative information, catastrophizing, and rumination.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected college students' mental health and caused post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Event centrality is thought to play a key role in the development of PTSS, but it is not yet clear by what mechanism. Theoretically, event centrality may affect the retrieval of traumatic memories and further prompt post-traumatic cognitions to understand events, and so may in turn be associated with PTSS in college students. However, few empirical studies have examined the mediating role of post-traumatic cognitions in the relationship bet

From loneliness to internet addiction in adolescents: disentangling the within-person mediating role of rumination via RI-CLPM.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction symptoms have received increasing research attention as a public health concern among adolescents, with well-documented negative impacts on psychological wellbeing and social functioning. Although loneliness has been identified as an important correlate and prospective risk factor for Internet addiction symptoms, the longitudinal mechanisms underlying this relationship remain underexplored. This three-wave longitudinal study examines the mediating role of rumination in the link between loneliness and internet addiction among Chinese adolescents. METHODS: A total

Effects of analytical and experiential self-focus on rumination after a stress induction in patients with social anxiety disorder: a pilot study.

According to cognitive models, negative post-event processing rumination is a key maintaining factor in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Analogue research has supported the differentiation of self-focus into different modes of self-focused attention with distinct effects on rumination in depression and social anxiety. The purpose of this study was to replicate these effects with a sample of clients with SAD (N = 12) using (a) an experimental, cross-over design and (b) an evaluation situation (impromptu speech) prior to manipulation. Processing an identical list of symptoms, half of a sample was
