Spinal cord injury (SCI) is among the most devastating neurological conditions worldwide, imposing substantial clinical, psychological, and socioeconomic burdens on affected individuals and healthcare services. However, a translational gap persists between preclinical findings and therapeutically relevant human applications, partly involving the limitations of conventional two-dimensional culture systems, which inadequately reproduce the complex three-dimensional structure of the spinal cord; and partly due to the fact that animal models differ from humans phylogenetically and physiologically.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) increases the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in military populations. Utilizing translationally relevant animal models is imperative for establishing a platform to delineate neurobehavioral deficits common to clinical PTSD that emerge in the months to years following mTBI. Such platforms are required to facilitate preclinical development of novel therapeutics. First, this mini review provides an overview of the incidence of PTSD following mTBI in military service members. Secondly, the translational relevance of fear conditioning paradigms used

A 36-month-old female Pembroke Welsh Corgi with a cardiac murmur weighing 12.6 kg was referred to the Matsubara Animal Hospital cardiology service. Echocardiography revealed a patent ductus arteriosus. The dog underwent ductus arteriosus closure using an Amplatz Canine Duct Occluder. After the operation, we suspected coagulation and a platelet disorder because of the slightly increased haemorrhage during the operation, postoperative purpura around the surgical wound inside of the thigh, and dog breed, which is known to be commonly affected with von Willebrand disease (vWD). Subsequently, type

The capacity to detect, control and manage emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases in Africa has been limited by a lack of utilisation of available reporting structures and policies to support programmes at national and local levels. This study explored the impact of the Zambian government policies on animal and human disease reporting and management and on One Health opportunities. An in-depth review and analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the existing policies and reporting structures in the departments responsible for Veterinary Services, Health, and Wildlife

An 8-year-old alpaca was admitted to the emergency service of the Clinic for Ruminants in Bern due to a reduced general condition and progressive neurological signs. Despite supportive treatment, its condition deteriorated and the animal had to be euthanized. Histopathological analysis revealed a severe non-suppurative polioencephalomyelitis with neuronal necrosis, most likely of viral origin. We detected abundant neuronal labelling with antibodies directed against two different epitopes of Bovine Astrovirus CH13/NeuroS1 (BoAstV-CH13/NeuroS1), which is a common viral agent associated with non-

In past decades, we have seen several epidemics of respiratory infections from newly emerging viruses, most of which originated in animals. These emerging infections, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and the pandemic influenza A(H1N1) and avian influenza (AI) viruses, have seriously threatened global health and the economy. In particular, MERS-CoV and AI A(H7N9) are still causing infections in several areas, and some clustering of cases of A(H5N1) and A(H7N9) may imply future possible pandemics. Addition

Melioidosis is a potentially fatal infection caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei Clinical diagnosis of melioidosis can be challenging since there is no pathognomonic clinical syndrome, and the organism is often misidentified by methods used routinely in clinical laboratories. Although the disease is more prevalent in Thailand and northern Australia, sporadic cases may be encountered in areas where it is not endemic, including the United States. Since the organism is considered a tier 1 select agent according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Departmen

Prevalence of Coenurus cerebralis prevalence was assessed in sheep and goats at three slaughter slabs in Ngorongoro district, Tanzania. Predisposing factors were also determined by using a structured questionnaire. Between January 2013 and April 2013, a total of 180 heads (90 sheep and 90 goats) were collected and examined for the presences of C. cerebralis cysts. Out of 180 heads examined, 80 were found to be infected with C. cerebralis. Lack of knowledge in the community on how coenurosis occurs, free access of dogs to the carcasses/offal of small ruminants and inadequate animal health servi

Limited data are available on the pathogen status of contemporary rodent colonies in Taiwan. Here we summarized the rodent pathogen diagnostic records of the Taiwan National Laboratory Animal Center during a 4-y period that representing approximately 10% of the rodent colonies in Taiwan. Demand for pathogen diagnostic service increased continuously from 2004 to 2007, with a 20% increase each year. In 2007, more than 20% of the mouse colonies were positive for mouse parvovirus, mouse hepatitis virus, Theiler murine encephalomyelitis virus, and Mycoplasma pulmonis, with fewer colonies diagnosed

Tularemia is a potentially fatal multi-systemic disease of humans and other animals caused by the bacterial pathogen Francisella tularensis. The disease can be transmitted by ticks, biting flies, water exposure, food, and aerosols and occurs around the northern hemisphere including North America, Europe, and Asia. There are several defined species and subspecies, including F. tularensis subsp. tularensis (Jellison Type A) which is pathogenic for rabbits and occurs in North America, F. tularensis subsp. holarctica (Type B) and mediaasiatica which are less pathogenic for rabbits, and F. tularens

A simplified list of the principal Diptera capable of causing myiasis is followed by a brief presentation of the biology, lesions inflicted, and methods of treatment and control of the myiases of economic importance. Cochliomyiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax is of greatest interest, in view of the damage and losses caused by this disease. A brief account of the outbreak of infestation in Libya illustrates the danger of this parasite. Other important traumatic myiases are described: that due to Chrysomya bezziana, which causes an African myiasis similar to cochliomyiasis, and those due t

In early 1983, an outbreak of illness caused by raw milk contaminated with multiple-antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella typhimurium occurred in Arizona. One of the cases involved a 72-year-old woman who died with Salmonella enteritis and sepsis that had not responded to treatment with chloramphenicol. The S typhimurium isolates from this patient, from other ill persons, and from raw milk were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin sulfate, streptomycin, sulfonamide, and tetracycline. These resistances were mediated by a 105-megadalton R plasmid. During the epidemic period, 43% of t

BACKGROUND: Tsetse-borne African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) greatly influences livestock distribution and significantly slows livestock productivity in sub-Saharan Africa. While a number of control methods targeting the vector tsetse are in field application, treatment with the few available trypanocides continues to be the most widely applied control method. Unfortunately, improper and frequent use of these few available drugs, accelerated by poor veterinary service delivery, promotes trypanosome drug resistance, the magnitude of which has not been delineated. In the present study, current p

BACKGROUND: Cardiocerebral resuscitation (CCR) is reportedly superior to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for primary cardiac arrest in the prehospital setting. This study was done using a swine model of prolonged ventricular fibrillation (VF) to quantify the effect of the emergency medical services component of CCR with intraosseous access (CCR-IO) compared with standard CPR with intravenous access (CPR-IV) as it is typically performed during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) resuscitation in a prospective randomized fashion.
METHODS: Fifty-three animals were instrumented under anesth

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a viral zoonosis endemic in Madagascar, threatening human and animal health as well as the economy. Trade-related livestock movements are a major factor in the spread of RVF virus. While previous RVF research in Madagascar has focused on farmers or general ecology, this study is the first to specifically target livestock traders, the primary drivers for long-distance viral spread, in the Alaotra Mangoro endemic hotspot. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge, prevailing attitudes and current practices regarding RVF among people engaged in livestock trade i

Zoonotic diseases disproportionately burden settings where humans and livestock coexist, yet community-level knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) remain poorly characterized in West Africa. This study aimed to assess KAP regarding zoonotic diseases and document household biosecurity gaps among livestock-keeping community members in Ada East Distrct in Ghana. A concurrent mixed-methods design was employed, integrating a quantitative cross-sectional survey with a qualitative focus group discussion. Livestock-keeping adults were recruited from five health facilities in Ada East District. A s

Veterinary care in much of Alaska is extremely limited due to the high cost of living and low access to care. To date, community perspectives on veterinary care and the efficacy of veterinary services introduced have not been documented in Alaska Native communities, in this case specifically the Yukon Kuskokwim (YK) Delta of Alaska. This stymies the introduction of thoughtful public policy created with community insights. It also impedes program funding and awareness of the public health importance of veterinary care. This study aims to utilize information from surveys to form a basis in liter
