Alterations in macroscopically intact skin of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Punch biopsies of macroscopic-intact skin were performed on 75 children with rheumatoid arthritis, aged 4--14 years. There was no significant correlation between the morphologic alterations and the sex and age of the children or the duration of the disease, but there was a positive relationship with the degree of activity of the rheumatoid process. It appears that punch biopsy of the skin in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis can facilitate determination of alterations of the connective tissue if the data obtained are regularly correlated with clinical and laboratory findings. In such

Establishing Reference Intervals for Adult Lymphocyte Subsets: Single-Platform Volume Analysis Reveals Age- and Sex-Specific Trajectories of Immunosenescence.

BACKGROUND: Current clinical reference intervals for lymphocyte subsets lack age- and sex-specific stratification, limiting accurate immune assessment. This study aimed to establish such stratified reference intervals in a large cohort of healthy adults aged 20-60 years. METHODS: A total of 1760 healthy adults were included. The absolute counts and percentage distributions of peripheral blood (PB) lymphocyte subsets were determined via flow cytometry (FCM) using a single-platform volume method. Differences between age groups and sexes were then compared. RESULTS: The absolute counts of total

alpha AD alpha hybrids of Cryptococcus neoformans: evidence of same-sex mating in nature and hybrid fitness.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a ubiquitous human fungal pathogen that causes meningoencephalitis in predominantly immunocompromised hosts. The fungus is typically haploid, and sexual reproduction involves two individuals with opposite mating types/sexes, alpha and a. However, the overwhelming predominance of mating type (MAT) alpha over a in C. neoformans populations limits alpha-a mating in nature. Recently it was discovered that C. neoformans can undergo same-sex mating under laboratory conditions, especially between alpha isolates. Whether same-sex mating occurs in nature and contributes to th

Renal expression of organic anion transporters is modified after mercuric chloride exposure: Gender-related differences.

Mercuric ions (Hg+2) gain access to proximal tubule cells primarily by the Organic Anion Transporter 1 (Oat1) and 3 (Oat3) in the basolateral plasma membrane. The removal process of Hg+2 ions from cells into the lumen involves an efflux process mainly mediated by the Multidrug Resistance-Associated Protein 2 (Mrp2). The aim of this study was to compare the sex-related differences in the renal expression of Oat1, Oat3, and Mrp2 after mercuric chloride (HgCl2) treatment and analyze their relevance in the mercury-induced nephrotoxicity. Control and Hg-treated male and female Wistar rats were used

Transcription factors in microcephaly.

Higher cognition in humans, compared to other primates, is often attributed to an increased brain size, especially forebrain cortical surface area. Brain size is determined through highly orchestrated developmental processes, including neural stem cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, lamination, arborization, and apoptosis. Disruption in these processes often results in either a small (microcephaly) or large (megalencephaly) brain. One of the key mechanisms controlling these developmental processes is the spatial and temporal transcriptional regulation of critical genes. In humans,

[Sex of rearing in 46,XY partial gonadal dysgenesis (case report)].

XY patients with gonadal dysgenesis present with a wide array of clinical pictures that is characterised by a variable incomplete virilisation of the external genital organs (female phenotype, posterior hypospadias, cryptorchidism) and the persistence of the internal müllerian duct structures. The birth of a child with this type of abnormality is a social phenomenon, which will probably have a physical and psychical impact. The choice of the sex depends on the organic anatomy, diagnosis age, risk of gonadal tumors and the development possibilities (mainly at puberty) of the child. The registra

Sex-Specific Response to A1BG Loss Results in Female Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac disease often manifests differently in terms of frequency and pathology between men and women. However, the mechanisms underlying these differences are not fully understood. The glycoprotein A1BG is necessary for proper cardiac function in females but not males. Despite this, the role of A1BG in the female heart remains poorly studied. METHODS: To determine the sex differential function of A1BG, we generated a novel conditional A1bg allele and a novel conditional A1bg Rosa26 knockin allele. A dataset of sandfly (Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus alexandri, and Phlebotomus sergenti) genital and pharyngeal images.

Sandflies serve as carriers for numerous tropical diseases, including leishmaniasis, bartonellosis, and sandfly fever. Furthermore, sandflies are species-specific when it comes to transmitting corresponding pathogen species. Hence, accurate classification and identification of sandfly species and gender are essential for various purposes such as disease monitoring and control, population management, research and development, and epidemiological investigations. Most of the sexing and taxonomy keys are based on internal morphological features, which may lead to errors due to some features being

The influence of age and sex on the absolute cell numbers of the human brain cerebral cortex.

The human cerebral cortex is one of the most evolved regions of the brain, responsible for most higher-order neural functions. Since nerve cells (together with synapses) are the processing units underlying cortical physiology and morphology, we studied how the human neocortex is composed regarding the number of cells as a function of sex and age. We used the isotropic fractionator for cell quantification of immunocytochemically labeled nuclei from the cerebral cortex donated by 43 cognitively healthy subjects aged 25-87 years old. In addition to previously reported sexual dimorphism in the med

Mixed Evidence that Dosage Sensitive Genes Drive Global Dosage Compensation in Flour Beetles.

Heteromorphic sex chromosomes create inherent gene dosage differences between males and females because one sex carries a single copy of the X chromosome while the other carries two. Many species have evolved mechanisms that equalize X-linked gene expression between the sexes and, in some cases, restore ancestral autosomal levels, a process known as dosage compensation. Although chromosome-wide compensation is common in male heterogametic (XY) insects, regulatory outcomes vary across taxa and sex chromosome systems, leaving the evolutionary forces shaping sex chromosome regulation unresolved.

17β-Estradiol Induced Sex Reversal and Gonadal Transcriptome Analysis in the Oriental River Prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense): Mechanisms, Pathways, and Potential Harm.

Sex reversal induced by 17β-estradiol (E2) has shown the potential possibility for monoculture technology development. The present study aimed to determine whether dietary supplementation with different concentrations of E2 could induce sex reversal in M. nipponense, and select the sex-related genes by performing the gonadal transcriptome analysis of normal male (M), normal female (FM), sex-reversed male prawns (RM), and unreversed male prawns (NRM). Histology, transcriptome analysis, and qPCR were performed to compare differences in gonad development, key metabolic pathways, and genes. Compar

Production of sterile mono-sex triploid yellow drum (Nibea albiflora): genotypic females and sex-reversed phenotypic males with emphasis on utilization as surrogate broodstock.

Production of sterile mono-sex fish is of great significance for sustainable aquaculture as well as germ cell transplantation. In this study, we aimed to produce mono-sex triploid yellow drum, including genotypic females (XXX female) and sex-reversed phenotypic males (XXX male). Firstly, the mono-female triploids were produced through cold-shock treatment on eggs fertilized with sperm from neo-males. Then, the mono-male triploids were produced by the sex reversal of mono-female triploids with oral administration of letrozole (LZ). We comparatively investigated the growth and gonadal developmen

[Y chromosome and spermatogenesis].

Human Y chromosome evolution has progressively been directed towards a role in sex determination and reproduction. Cytogenetically visible structural abnormalities have determined long arm chromosomal regions which define the AZF factor that contains genes implicated in the spermatogenic process. By using molecular tools, the AZF factor has been subdivided into three loci, AZFa, b and c, the deletion of which leads to specific spermatogenesis impairments due to the loss of particular genes. Most AZF genes are specifically expressed in testis but their functions are far to be known precisely. P

[XX male: 3 case reports during childhood].

We report on three patients with the clinical condition known as "XX male", which is uncommon in the pediatric age group. Patients have a male phenotype (usually without ambiguous genitalia) and testes; however, the karyotype is 46,XX. The diagnosis is usually made in adult life due to infertility; it may also be done by the pediatrician when there is ambiguous genitalia or gynecomastia. The SRY gene (Sex-determining Region of the Y chromosome) is detected in most cases, thus explaining the origin of testicular development; however, it is absent in 20% of the cases, thus indicating that gonada

Determination of chromium and caesium in human cataractous lenses.

The concentration of chromium and caesium in totally opaque (mature) cataractous lenses has been determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis and gamma spectrometry. The presence of these trace-elements in the human lens has to our knowledge not been investigated so far. Both elements under study are of known biological importance. Chromium is an essential trace-element necessary for the maintenance of normal glucose metabolism. Moreover it is considered to rank among those elements, the increased level of which contributes to environmental pollution. Caesium is a biologically import

The embryonic ontogeny of the gonadal somatic cells in mice and monkeys.

In the early fetal stage, the gonads are bipotent and only later become the ovary or testis, depending on the genetic sex. Despite many studies examining how sex determination occurs from biopotential gonads, the spatial and temporal organization of bipotential gonads and their progenitors is poorly understood. Here, using lineage tracing in mice, we find that the gonads originate from a T+ primitive streak through WT1+ posterior intermediate mesoderm and appear to share origins anteriorly with the adrenal glands and posteriorly with the metanephric mesenchyme.
