Little leaguer's elbow and Little leaguer's shoulder are overuse pathologies seen in overhead-throwing athletes. No instance of simultaneously occurring pathologies has been published. A 15-year-old baseball pitcher and football quarterback developed pain in his throwing shoulder and elbow during spring baseball, which partially resolved with several months of rest. During fall football practice, he felt a pop and pain over his medial throwing elbow. Five days after the initial injury, medial elbow tenderness, mild swelling, and decreased range of motion were noted. Radiographs revealed a Salt

The painful frozen shoulder has many different causes. Most common among the patients in the hospital "Bergmannsheil" is the deterioration of a cervical syndrome through an accident. Stiffness is seen occasionally after injuries to the soft tissues of the shoulder, especially after dislocations or dislocated fractures of the shoulder. A few case reports are given to illustrate the origin and the treatment of the painful frozen shoulder. An effective therapy aims at the underlying cause. Physiotherapy is helpful to hasten the remobilization of the shoulder. A support for the arm is an important

BACKGROUND: Surgical managements are recommended for unstable distal clavicle fractures because of a high incidence of nonunion. A variety of methods have been previously reported, but there is no current consensus regarding which method is the most suitable.
METHODS: Between December 2004 and August 2010, we treated 68 patients with Neer type IIB distal clavicle fractures using single coracoclavicular suture fixation with Mersilene tape (M group) or clavicular hook plate (H group). Sixty-eight patients were followed at least 24 months (mean, 37.9 months). We retrospectively compared the func

HYPOTHESIS: The goal of the present study was to compare minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) technique and conventional open reduction with LCP for the treatment of clavicle midshaft fractures in adults in a randomized, controlled, clinical trial with a minimum of 1-year follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 2006 and May 2008, 64 cases of open reduction and internal plate fixation were performed for clavicle midshaft fractures. The operative indications were complete displacement, severe comminution and marked shortening of the clavicle (>2cm). MIPPO and conv

AIMS: Fractures of the clavicle primarily occur in young males and constitute 2.6% to 5% of all fractures in adults. Distal clavicle fractures, where the outer end of the collarbone breaks, account for 20% to 25% of all clavicle fractures. These fractures can be called displaced if the ligaments connecting the collarbone to the shoulder blade (coracoclavicular complex) rupture. Such displaced fractures (Neer's type II and V) are currently treated with an operation involving fracture fixation or with sling immobilization. This protocol describes a randomized controlled trial that aims to evalua

Proximal humeral fracture is one of the most prevalent osteoporotic fractures in the elderly, ranking third after hip and distal radius fractures and accounting for approximately 10% of all geriatric fractures. With population aging, its global incidence continues to rise annually. Most mild and stable fractures can be managed conservatively, while nearly 15%-20% of displaced complex fractures require surgical intervention. Current mainstream strategies include locking plate fixation, intramedullary nailing, hemiarthroplasty, anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty, and reverse total shoulder art

BACKGROUND: The indications for operative treatment of scapula fractures have been debated over the past decade. Our purpose was to determine 1) the incidence and trends in the operative treatment of scapula fractures, 2) the incidence of conversion from operative fixation to total or hemi-shoulder arthroplasty (THSA) and 3) rates of associated injuries in scapula fractures. We hypothesized that the operative treatment of scapula fractures is increasing over time and that scapula fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) would have increased risk for conversion to THSA

CASE: A 21-year-old woman presented with a chronic fracture dislocation of her left shoulder after striking a submerged tree during a watersport activity. She was initially treated at an outside hospital, where she underwent open reduction and internal fixation of her posterior scapula. She presented 8 weeks after index procedure with pain and severely decreased range of motion. Her comminuted and displaced fracture comprising 70% of the anterior superior glenoid was surgically reconstructed using a distal tibia allograft (DTA), resulting in a functional shoulder.
CONCLUSION: A DTA is a feasi

BACKGROUND: First-rib stress fracture is considered a potential cause of nonspecific atraumatic chronic shoulder pain in adolescent athletes. However, the etiology in throwing athletes with first-rib fracture is still unknown. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the characteristic clinical features and radiographic findings of overhead throwing athletes with first-rib fracture.
METHODS: Twenty-four first-rib stress fractures in 23 players were studied retrospectively. Clinical features, including age, initial symptom, sports, pain-related activity, diagnostic method, tr

Scapular fractures in the multiply injured patient have received little attention. Fifty-six patients with 58 scapular fractures secondary to blunt trauma were reviewed. The patients averaged 3.9 major injuries excluding their scapular fractures. The injury pattern associated with blunt scapular fracture is unique. Patients with scapular fracture have a high incidence of injury to the ipsilateral lung and chest wall and to the ipsilateral shoulder girdle and its contained structures: rib fractures, 53.6%; pulmonary contusions, 53.6%; clavicular fracture, 26.8%; brachial plexus injury, 12.5%; s

AIM: Midshaft clavicle fractures are a common form of upper extremity injury, with various treatment modalities available to stabilize displaced midshaft clavicular fractures. However, the optimal surgical method remains a matter of controversy. This study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of bilaterally threaded elastic locking intramedullary nailing (BTELIN) versus minimally invasive percutaneous locking plate (MIPLP) fixation in treating midshaft clavicle fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 110 patients with midshaft clavicle fractures treated between

BACKGROUND: Upper limb fractures significantly alter movement, impacting function and recovery. Three-dimensional motion analysis allows precise assessment of these changes.
METHODS: Sixty patients were divided into four groups: shoulder, elbow, wrist fractures, and controls. Functional assessment was performed using the DASH questionnaire, followed by three-dimensional kinematic analysis with eight Oqus 300 cameras and 14 reflective markers on the thorax, scapula, humerus, forearm, and hand. The Acromion Marker Cluster method was used for accurate scapular tracking. Tasks analyzed included h

OBJECTIVE: The Quebec shoulder dislocation rule is a recently derived clinical decision rule to guide physicians on the selective use of radiography in patients with shoulder dislocation. The aim of this study was to validate the Quebec shoulder dislocation rule.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data collected in a retrospective cohort study. All patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) between January 1, 2003, and October 31, 2008, with a diagnosis of shoulder dislocation or fracture-dislocation were identified from ED management databases. Data collected included demogr

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic shoulder dislocations with glenoid rim fractures show high rates of dislocation recurrence. For glenoid rim defects exceeding a certain size, several investigators recommend bone grafting. Few reports on anatomical glenoid reconstruction addressing this problem are published.
HYPOTHESIS: Anatomical glenoid reconstruction by the J-bone graft creates permanent joint stability without a clinically relevant loss of motion.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Forty-seven shoulders with glenoid rim fractures after recurrent anterior dislocation were

Forty-two humeral diaphyseal fractures in 41 patients were treated at three centers between April 1988 and November 1989. There were 28 acute fractures; four were open. Average time to union was 8 weeks. There were no infections. Six patients with seven pathologic fractures due to metastatic disease died during the course of this study, but the nail had allowed them to be functional with minimal surgical dissection. Five of six nonunions united with one procedure. There was one residual nonunion in a patient with a wide canal and an arthrodesed shoulder above the nonunion. There were three pre

The purpose of this report was to evaluate patient outcomes after treatment of acute midshaft clavicle fractures with an intramedullary Hagie pin, including clinical results and the incidence of postoperative complications. Between 1993 and 2003, 16 patients who underwent intramedullary Hagie pin fixation of a midshaft clavicle fracture were identified. The medical records of each patient were reviewed to ascertain the mechanism of injury, indication for surgical intervention, and treatment course. Clinical outcomes were evaluated with respect to time to fracture union, postoperative shoulder
