Evaluation of a dislocated shoulder must classify the direction of dislocation and describe additional injuries as well as the recurrence rate. This is required in all types of dislocations by recording the case history in detail, and by examining the shoulder clinically as well as radiographically in two planes. Ultrasound and arthro-computer tomography are valid methods to demonstrate injuries of bony and ligamentous structures. They may therefore influence surgical treatment. In posterior dislocation of the shoulder quite often early diagnosis is missed. If this injury is suspected, careful

Because of the widespread use of eponyms and acronyms to describe labroligamentous findings in the shoulder, interpreting shoulder magnetic resonance imaging reports can be challenging. A summary of the appearance of these lesions on shoulder magnetic resonance images can help the orthopedic surgeon to understand these entities as imaging findings and to determine the appropriate treatment for patients with shoulder injuries.

UNLABELLED: Shoulder abduction is a very complex movement and quite important for upper limb function, as more distal functions depend on a stable shoulder, especially in C5, C6 brachial plexus injuries. Various studies in the literature have emphasized the importance of improved functional outcome and shoulder reanimation with concomitant neurotization of suprascapular nerve and axillary nerve in C5, C6 brachial plexus injuries. A number of approaches to axillary nerve transfer in brachial plexus injuries have been reported. The author describes an innovative anterior deltopectoral approach f

BACKGROUND: Both acute and overuse injuries are common among recreational volleyball players, especially finger/wrist, ankle, shoulder and knee injuries. Consequently, an intervention ('VolleyVeilig') was developed to prevent or reduce the occurrence of finger/wrist, shoulder, knee and ankle injuries among recreational volleyball players. This article describes the design of a study evaluating the effectiveness of the developed intervention on the one-season occurrence of finger/wrist, shoulder, knee and ankle injuries among recreational adult volleyball players.

Combined neurotization of both axillary and suprascapular nerves in shoulder reanimation has been widely accepted in brachial plexus injuries, and the functional outcome is much superior to single nerve transfer. This study describes the surgical anatomy for axillary nerve relative to the available donor nerves and emphasize the salient technical aspects of anterior deltopectoral approach in brachial plexus injuries. Fifteen patients with brachial plexus injury who had axillary nerve neurotizations were evaluated. Five patients had complete avulsion, 9 patients had C5, six patients had brachia

Repetitive task performance is a leading cause of musculoskeletal injuries among order-picking workers in warehouses. The repetition of lifting tasks increases the risk of back and shoulder injuries among these workers. While lifting in this industry is composed of loaded and unloaded picking and placing, the existing literature does not address the separate analysis of the biomechanics of the back and shoulder for these events. To that end, we investigated the kinematics of the back and shoulder movements of nine healthy male participants who performed three sessions of a simulated de/palleti…

In this study we analysed technique, ball speed and trunk injury data collected at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) from 42 high performance male fast bowlers over a four year period. We found several notable technique inter-relationships, technique and ball speed relationships, and associations between technique and trunk injuries. A more front-on shoulder alignment at back foot contact was significantly related to increased shoulder counter-rotation (p < 0.001). Bowlers who released the ball at greater speeds had an extended front knee, or extended their front knee, during the front f

This suggests that these injuries can achieve similarly good clinical results provided any associated shoulder pathology is identified and treated appropriately.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Shoulder stability is crucial, and appropriate therapy is essential for improving patient outcomes following an injury.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old male was admitted to the clinic after lifting heavy objects at the fitness center. The physical examination reveals a decreased range of motion (ROM) and impaired flexion and external rotation of the shoulder joint. The left shoulder X-ray shows moderate soft tissue swelling without discontinuities of the bone, although elevation of the distal clavicle is prominent. After a comprehensive examination, the patient w

The majority of shoulder injuries occur due to repetitive overhead movements, with baseball pitching being the most common mechanism for overuse injury. Before studying the treatment of these shoulder injuries, it is paramount that the health professional have an understanding of the etiology of and the underlying mechanisms for shoulder pathology. The act of overhead throwing is an eloquent full-body motion that requires tremendous coordination from the time of force generation to follow-through. The shoulder complex is a crucial component of the upper body kinetic chain as it transmits force…

Injuries to the shoulder and elbow in the pediatric and adolescent throwing athlete are common. Both knowledge of throwing mechanics and understanding of normal bone development in the immature skeleton are key to the diagnosis, treatment, and potential prevention of these common injuries. Pathologic changes from chronic repetitive trauma to the developing shoulder and elbow manifest as distinctly different injuries that can be predicted by the skeletal maturation of the patient. Sites of vulnerability and resulting patterns of injury change as the child evolves from the skeletally immature li

We report on the surgical results of spinal accessory nerve injuries between 1992-2003. We operated on 10 patients (9 female, and 1 male) who had injuries of the spinal accessory nerve. All injuries were iatrogenic. The mean age of patients was 39.2 years (range, 20-57 years). The average interval between date of injury and surgery was 7 months (range, 4-12 months). All patients had stiffness and pain in the shoulder girdle. The average active abduction of the shoulder joint was 79.5 degrees (range, 60-100 degrees ) before surgery. End-to-end repairs were performed in 7 cases, and graft repair

In the field of traumatic shoulder dislocations, this report of a 61-year-old female patient discusses the case of an acute locked superior shoulder dislocation in conjunction with a chronic rotator cuff arthropathy resulting from a low-energy fall on the outstretched and abducted arm. Radiological assessment revealed a complex combination of associated bony injuries including a fracture of the upper part of the glenoid and an impaction fracture of the inferior articular surface of the humeral head. Closed reduction and immobilisation were not successful in obtaining joint stability. This uniq

Although paracycling is a growing discipline in high level competitive sports as well as in posttraumatic rehabilitation, epidemiological data of resulting injuries is still missing. Therefore, 19 athletes of the German national paracycling team were asked about their injuries during the 2008 season using a standardized questionnaire. Overall, 18 (94.7 %) of 19 athletes reported overuse injuries; most commonly localized at the back (83.3 %), neck/shoulder (77.8 %), knee (50 %), groin/buttock (50 %) and hands/wrists (38.9 %). Altogether, 18 accidents were registered, corresponding to an injury

Acromioclavicular joint injuries are among the most common shoulder girdle injuries in athletes and most commonly result from a direct force to the acromion with the arm in an adducted position. Acromioclavicular joint injuries often present with associated injuries to the glenohumeral joint, including an increased incidence of superior labrum anterior posterior (SLAP) tears that may warrant further evaluation and treatment. Anteroposterior stability of the acromioclavicular joint is conferred by the capsule and acromioclavicular ligaments, of which the posterior and superior ligaments are the

In 34 post-mortem examinations of car occupants wearing seat belts and killed in straight or oblique head-on collisions, a thorough investigation of the spine was performed. The autopsy results were correlated with the findings in the cars in order to reconstruct the events when the occupant's body struck the interior of the car. In 2 cases the victims had worn lap belts, in 15 cases shoulder belts and in 17 cases combined shoulder-lap belts (three-point belts). In victims involved in head-on collisions while wearing lap belts, fractures of the neural arch of the axis were found which were pro
