Lesions involving the base of the skull can be divided into primary and secondary disease processes. The primary group consists of bone lesions more often seen elsewhere in the skeletal system while the secondary group consist of those lesions extending to the base of the skull by direct extension from adjacent intracranial or extracranial sites. The purpose of this paper will be to arrive at a classification of skull base lesions based on the roentgen localization of the disease process. The base of the skull because of its anatomically variable curvature can be difficult to evaluate on good …

Trepanation, the ancient practice of drilling or scraping a hole into the human skull, is one of the earliest known surgical procedures. Its evolution, from prehistoric times to modern neurosurgery, reflects the development of medical knowledge and surgical techniques, depicting significant progress and cultural variations that have persisted until our modern era. From its origins in Neolithic societies, where it was used for therapeutic and ritualistic purposes, to its refinement in ancient Greece, medieval Europe, and beyond, trepanation has been crucial to the history of medicine. Its legac…

Despite their distinct embryonic origins, the skull and brain are highly integrated. Understanding the covariation between the skull and brain can shed light on anatomical, cognitive, and behavioral traits in extant and extinct species. Domestic dogs offer a unique opportunity to investigate skull-brain covariation due to their diverse skull morphologies and neural anatomy. To assess this question, we examined T2-weighted MRI studies of 62 dogs from 33 breeds, plus an additional 17 dogs of mixed or unknown breeds. Scans were opportunistically collected from a veterinary teaching hospital of do…

Biological variation is often considered in a scalable hierarchy, e.g., within the individual, within the populations, above the species lev … era-level radiations, and among species at the family level. We demonstrate this approach using the skull of mammalian family Leporidae (rabbits and hares), which is morphologically diverse and has a rare-among-mammals functional signal of locomotion adaptation. We tested three alternative hypotheses of modularity; from the most supported we investigate …

Forensic pathologists may use 3D prints as demonstrative aids when providing expert testimony in court of law, but the effects remain unclear despite many assumed benefits. In this qualitative study, the effects of using a 3D print, demonstrating a blunt force skull fracture, in court were explored by thematic analysis of interviews with judges, prosecutors, defence counsels, and forensic pathologists with the aim of improving the expert testimony. Five semi-structured focus groups and eight one-to-one interviews with a total of 29 stakeholders were transcribed ad verbatim and analysed using t…

Pediatric growing skull fractures are complications that usually occur due to delays in management. In this report, we present the case of a three-year-old girl who was brought to the outpatient department with a complaint of swelling in her scalp. The patient had a history of swelling after suffering a head injury at the age of six months. There was no history of specific neurological impairments or seizures, despite the swelling being reported to have grown gradually in size. The current case is being reported since early evaluation of pediatric patients with a head injury, regardless of any…

Chondrosarcoma of the skull base is a malignant tumor of cartilage origin. Clinical manifestations are nonspecific, early can be asymptomatic. We report a case of asymptomatic chondrosarcoma of the skull base which is difficult to confirm the diagnosis. The patient underwent Type A resection of chondrosarcoma of the skull base through the left subtemporal fossa approach, with postoperative radiotherapy. And the patient achieved good postoperative recovery. Therefore, chondrosarcoma of the skull base is a rare malignant tumor with slow growth. Early detection, excision, and postoperative radiot…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between disc displacement and the presence of reduction by comparing condyle anteroposterior (AP) diameter, condyle height, mandibular fossa AP diameter, and mandibular fossa depth.
METHODS: A total of 588 joints of 294 patients were included in the study for evaluation. Disc displacement and the presence of reduction, condyle AP diameter, condyle height, mandibular fossa AP diameter, and mandibular fossa depth were evaluated.
RESULTS: Of the 588 temporomandibular joint examined in the study, there was disc displac

Background Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) of the skull base is a rare, locally destructive lesion managed with a variety of treatments. We explore the impact of treatment on outcome and assess the prognosis of IPT. Methods This is a retrospective review of IPT of the skull base at a tertiary academic medical center. The primary outcome was radiographic progression after treatment. Outcome versus tumor location was also examined and a prognostic model was developed using a logistic regression. Results The demographics of 21 patients with IPT are reported. Treatment consisted of corticosteroi…

The cranial base is a multifunctional bony platform within the core of the cranium, spanning rostral to caudal ends. This structure provides support for the brain and skull vault above, serves as a link between the head and the vertebral column below, and seamlessly integrates with the facial skeleton at its rostral end. Unique from the majority of the cranial skeleton, the cranial base develops from a cartilage intermediate-the chondrocranium-through the process of endochondral ossification. Owing to the intimate association of the cranial base with nearly all aspects of the head, congenital …
