Sleep disturbances are common in patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (pDoC) and are closely correlated with clinical outcomes. With an increasing number of pDoC patients undergoing surgery under general anaesthesia (GA), this study characterized sleep patterns in pDoC patients and evaluated the effects of GA on consciousness and nocturnal sleep. We prospectively enrolled 30 pDoC patients (14 in vegetative state [VS] and 16 in minimally conscious state [MCS]) undergoing spinal cord stimulation and 12 healthy controls. Among pDoC patients, 19 (10 VS, 9 MCS) with complete pre- and

Sleep is integral to cardiovascular health1,2. Yet, the circuits that connect cardiovascular pathology and sleep are incompletely understood. It remains unclear whether cardiac injury influences sleep and whether sleep-mediated neural outputs contribute to heart healing and inflammation. Here we report that in humans and mice, monocytes are actively recruited to the brain after myocardial infarction (MI) to augment sleep, which suppresses sympathetic outflow to the heart, limiting inflammation and promoting healing. After MI, microglia rapidly recruit circulating monocytes to the brain's thala

OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has adversely affected the physical and mental health of older adults worldwide. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with depression among older adults during the pandemic and to develop strategies to enhance their psychological well-being.
METHODS: Data from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) collected during the COVID-19 pandemic were compared with pre-pandemic data (Wave 5). We examined the impact of the pandemic on depressive symptoms in older adults and investigated potential influencing factors rela

OBJECTIVE: Both tobacco use and obstructive apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSA) can affect sleep, and it is speculated that tobacco use may further affect the sleep of those with OSA. Our primary objective is to clarify the associations between tobacco use and the macrostructure and microstructure of sleep in patients with OSA.
METHODS: This retrospective study encompasses a cohort of 1017 patients who were hospitalized between January 2020 and January 2023 for the investigation of sleep disorders. Rigorous inclusion criteria were applied, and all patients underwent a comprehensive polysomnography

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The teenage increase in sleepiness is not simply a response to decreasing nighttime sleep duration. Daytime sleepiness increases across adolescence even when prior sleep duration is held constant. Here we determine the maturational trend in daytime sleep propensity assessed with the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) and assess the trend's relation to pubertal maturation and changes in the sleep electroencephalogram. We also evaluate whether the relation of daytime sleep propensity to prior sleep duration changes between ages 10 and 23 years.
METHODS: Participants (n = 159)

Older adults have high prevalence rates of insomnia symptoms, yet it is unclear if these insomnia symptoms are associated with objective impairments in sleep. We hypothesized that insomnia complaints in older adults would be associated with objective differences in sleep compared with those without insomnia complaints. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a cross-sectional study in which older adults with insomnia complaints (cases, n=100) were compared with older adults without insomnia complaints (controls, n=100) using dual-night in-lab nocturnal polysomnography, study questionnaires and 7

Sleep disturbance has been implicated in cocaine use; however, the nature of the disturbance and its potential effects on cognition and learning are largely unknown. Twelve chronic cocaine users completed a 23-day inpatient study that included randomized, placebo-controlled, cocaine self-administration sessions. Six subjects received cocaine on each of days 4-6 and placebo on days 18-20, the other six received cocaine on each of days 18-20 and placebo on days 4-6. Sleep was measured by polysomnography, the Nightcap sleep monitor, and self-reported measures. Simple and vigilance reaction times

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In small, clinical samples, men have reduced slow wave sleep compared to women. Given the higher prevalence of sleep-related breathing disturbance in men, this study assessed sex differences in sleep in a large, non-clinical sample of adults and controlled for primary sleep disorders.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Men and women, 31-40 years old, drawn from a longitudinal sample representative of southeast Michigan served as subjects. Each underwent a sleep study consisting of two consecutive 8-h nights of standard polysomnography (NPSG) and a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)

Timing and quantity of sleep depend on a circadian (∼24-h) rhythm and a specific sleep requirement.1 Sleep curtailment results in a homeostatic rebound of more and deeper sleep, the latter reflected in increased electroencephalographic (EEG) slow-wave activity (SWA) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.2 Circadian rhythms are synchronized by the light-dark cycle but persist under constant conditions.3,4,5 Strikingly, arctic reindeer behavior is arrhythmic during the solstices.6 Moreover, the Arctic's extreme seasonal environmental changes cause large variations in overall activity and fo

Virtually all land mammals and birds have two sleep states: slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep [1, 2]. After deprivation of REM sleep by repeated awakenings, mammals increase REM sleep time [3], supporting the idea that REM sleep is homeostatically regulated. Some evidence suggests that periods of REM sleep deprivation for a week or more cause physiological dysfunction and eventual death [4, 5]. However, separating the effects of REM sleep loss from the stress of repeated awakening is difficult [2, 6]. The northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is a semiaquatic mammal [7

Rapid eye movement (REM) phases of sleep are consistently disrupted after trauma and in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). REM disruption impairs cued fear learning, a core element of trauma processing linked to PTSD risk and symptom persistence. Configural threat learning depends on the hippocampus and may be influenced by REM sleep, though its role in humans remains unclear. Here, 55 healthy participants were randomly assigned to REM sleep fragmentation or a control group without sleep disruption for two nights. On the final day, participants completed a configural threat learning task w

OBJECTIVE: Besides excessive daytime sleepiness, disturbed nocturnal sleep is a major complaint of patients with narcolepsy. Previously, alterations in skin temperature regulation in narcoleptic patients have been shown to be related to increased sleepiness. This study tests the hypothesis that direct control of nocturnal skin temperature might be applied to improve the disturbed sleep of narcoleptic patients.
METHODS: Participants were eight patients (five males) diagnosed as having narcolepsy with cataplexy according to the ICSD-2 criteria, mean (SD) age 28.6 (6.4) years, range 18-35 years.

Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) is a hereditary prion disease caused by a mutation at codon 178 of the prion-protein gene leading to a D178N substitution in the protein determining severe and selective atrophy of mediodorsal and anteroventral thalamic nuclei. FFI is characterized by physiological sleep loss, which polygraphically appears to be a slow wave sleep loss, autonomic and motor hyperactivation with peculiar episodes of oneiric stupor. Alteration of autonomic functions is a great burden for FFI patients consisting in sympathetic overactivation, dysregulation of its physiological response

Arousals are more numerous in heavy snorers than in nonsnorers and might be a cause of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in these patients. The present study investigated whether treatment of snoring by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) had an influence on sleep microstructure in nonapnoeic snorers. The polysomnographic records of 10 nonapnoeic snorers were reviewed retrospectively and arousals scored according to the American Sleep Disorders Association (ASDA) 3 s definition. Scores for snoring, EDS and polysomnographic data were compared before and after UPPP (mean (+/-SD) time interval 249

Sleep organisation in eight young [mean (SD); 20.9 (2.6) years] Peruvian high-altitude residents was studied in a laboratory in Cerro de Pasco at 4300 m. Electroencephalograms, electromyograms, electro-oculograms, electrocardiograms, respiratory movements and arterial oxygen saturation were recorded on an 8-channel Medilog recorder and analysed later in England. Haematocrits ranged from 48% to 64% [57.9 (5.6)%]. The amount of slow wave rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was similar to that reported in young lowlanders sleeping at sea level but very different to the disturbed sleep in visitors slee

This study investigated sleep EEG during placebo and after cholinergic stimulation with RS 86 in 36 healthy subjects, 34 patients with major depression and 20 patients with anxiety disorders. Cholinergic stimulation with RS 86 led to a decrease of slow wave sleep and REM latency. RS 86 had a more profound impact on REM latency in patients with major depression than in healthy controls and patients with anxiety disorders. Six out of 36 healthy controls, three out of 20 patients with anxiety disorders and 24 of 34 patients with depression displayed sleep onset REM periods after cholinergic stimu

In a series of experiments designed to assess the effects of alpha-MSH on various motivational processes, it was observed that the hormone can slightly decrease food intake and increase water consumption during the first hr after administration in rats. alpha-MSH also modified avoidance behavior in 1- and 3-day-old chicks, but there were no reliable effects on activity, distress vocalizations and the tonic immobility response. alpha-MSH appeared to modulate the sleep-waking activity of rats, and the most prominent effect was an increase of slow wave sleep during the 2-3 rd hr after treatment.

Sleep research on eating disorders has addressed two major questions: (1) the effects of chronic starvation in anorexia nervosa and of rapidly fluctuating eating patterns in bulimia nervosa on the sleep regulating processes and (2) the search for a significant neurobiological relationship between eating disorders and major depression. At present, the latter question appears to be resolved, since most of the available evidences clearly underline the notion that eating disorders (such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa) and affective disorders are two distinct entities. Regarding the effects of sta

Slow wave sleep (SWS), or deep sleep, is thought to be the most restorative stage of sleep and may be of a particular interest in the pathophysiology of obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in sleep architecture based on body mass index (BMI) among a pediatric population with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). We hypothesized that children with T1DM who are obese would have less SWS than those who are not obese. Of 105 children with T1DM (mean age 13.54 years, 49.5% females) in this study, 19% were obese, 22% were overweight, and 59% had a normal BMI (81% non-obese). The
