INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It may worsen renal function in CKD patients and is associated with uncontrolled blood pressure. Although OSA is found in up to 80% of CKD patients, there are limited data available on its clinical features in patients with and without CKD.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identifying the differences in the clinical characteristics of OSA between CKD and non-CKD OSA patients and determine the clinical predictors for CKD in OSA patients.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study conduc

BACKGROUND: Sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) has been associated with different ocular manifestations including glaucoma, floppy eye syndrome, punctate keratitis, keratoconus, and optic neuropathy. Angioid streaks are mainly associated with pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) although they can appear in other systemic conditions affecting the elastic fibers.
METHODS: This is a prospective, cross-sectional study. A complete ophthalmic examination was performed in 92 patients undergoing overnight polysomnography for suspicion of OSAS. Diagnosis and classification of OSAS were made based on apnea-hypopnea

Epidemiological studies showing the higher frequency of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome in men, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and in post-menopausal women suggest the beneficial role of estrogen. These findings are well supported by the pre-clinical studies (ten research studies described in this review) showing that estrogen and phytoestrogens attenuate the deleterious effects of chronic intermittent hypoxia (obstructive apnea in animals) on the genioglossal muscles and on other organs (co-morbidities) in ovariectomized rodents. Moreover, clinical studies (four research studies

OBJECTIVE: (i) To determine the prevalence of echocardiographic abnormalities in children with very severe OSA defined by an apnea hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 30 events/hour. (ii) To test the hypothesis that polysomnographic parameters predict echocardiographic variables in this population.
METHODS: Children aged 1-17 years presenting with polysomnography demonstrating an AHI ≥30 and referred for pre-operative echocardiography performed within the 6 months prior to tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A), over a two-year period (January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018) were evaluated. The exclusion cri

To investigate the possible correlation between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Thirty consecutive patients with a recent (<3mo) CRVO and an age- and sex-matched group of 30 control subjects were recruited. All subjects underwent full-night polysomnography to measure apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and oxygen desaturation index (ODI). The average AHI and ODI were significantly higher in CRVO patients (AHI: 13.86±8.63, ODI: 9.21±4.47) than in control subjects (AHI: 8.51±6.36, ODI: 5.87±3.18; P=0.008 and 0.001 respectively). Additionally, the AHI was positivel

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common but underdiagnosed among patients with kidney disease. This study examines whether the diagnosis of OSA in kidney transplant recipients (KTR) affected death, death-censored graft failure (DCGF), and acute rejection (AR). We analyzed the records of KTR who underwent transplant between 2000 and 2015. A total of 4014 kidney transplants were performed during the study period. Of these, 415 (10.3%) had a diagnosis of pretransplant OSA. Pretransplant OSA was associated with a higher risk of death in unadjusted analyses. After adjustment for potential confounde

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Early in life impairment of orofacial growth leads to sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Normal lingual gnosis and praxis are part of this early development related to the normal sensorimotor development of the tongue and surrounding oral musculature. The aim of this retrospective study was to explore if lingual praxia is impaired in both SDB children and adults and if there is an association to craniofacial morphology.
METHODS: The ability to perform simple tongue maneuvers was investigated in 100 prepubertal SDB children and 150 SDB adults (shown with polysomnography). All

Obesity plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and as an exacerbating factor of OSA. Given the interlinking relationship of obesity and OSA, treatment of obesity is fundamental in the management of OSA. Weight loss of 7% to 11% significantly improves OSA with remission seen with greater weight loss. Weight loss also ameliorates the constellation of other obesity-related metabolic conditions, reducing the overall cardiovascular risk in an obese person with OSA. This article discusses specific weight loss interventions effective in improving OSA, including life

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder in Parkinson's disease (PD), but the relationship between these two conditions remains uncertain. Upper airway (UA) dysfunction in PD is well documented in some patients and is believed to be a reflex of the motor involvement of laryngopharyngeal muscles. The aim of this study is to determine whether UA dysfunction and laryngopharyngeal motor dysfunction (LMD) are involved in the obstructive phenomenon of OSA in PD.
METHODS: Forty-eight PD patients underwent polysomnography for OSA diagnosis, functional evaluation of the UA by

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Precision medicine for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) requires noninvasive estimates of each patient's pathophysiological "traits." Here, we provide the first automated technique to quantify the respiratory arousal threshold-defined as the level of ventilatory drive triggering arousal from sleep-using diagnostic polysomnographic signals in patients with OSA.
METHODS: Ventilatory drive preceding clinically scored arousals was estimated from polysomnographic studies by fitting a respiratory control model (Terrill et al.) to the pattern of ventilation during spontaneous respirat

RATIONALE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects 2-5% of all children and is associated with cognitive and behavioral deficits, resulting in poor school performance. These psychological deficits may arise from brain injury, as seen in preliminary findings of lower gray matter volume among pediatric OSA patients. However, the psychological deficits in OSA are closely related to functions in the cortex, and such brain areas have not been specifically assessed. The objective was to determine whether cortical thickness, a marker of possible brain injury, is altered in children with OSA.
METHODS:

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects approximately 10% of adults, and alters brain gray and white matter. Psychological and physiological symptoms of the disorder are sex-specific, perhaps related to greater injury occurs in female than male patients in white matter. Our objective was to identify influences of OSA separated by sex on cortical gray matter.
METHODS: We assessed cortical thickness in 48 mild-severe OSA patients (mean age±std[range] = 46.5±9.0[30.8-62.7] years; apnea-hypopnea index = 32.6±21.1[6-102] events/hour; 12 female, 36 male; OSA severity: 5 mild, 18 moderat

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is accompanied by widespread abnormal spontaneous regional activity related to cognitive deficits. However, little is known about the topological properties of the functional brain connectome of patients with OSA. This study aimed to use the graph theory approaches to investigate the topological properties and functional connectivity (FC) of the functional connectome in patients with OSA, based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI).
METHODS: Forty-five male patients with newly diagnosed untreated severe OSA and 45 male good s
