Medical microrobots in reproductive medicine from the bench to the clinic.

Medical microrobotics is an emerging field that aims at non-invasive diagnosis and therapy inside the human body through miniaturized sensors and actuators. Such microrobots can be tethered (e.g., smart microcatheters, microendoscopes) or untethered (e.g., cell-based drug delivery systems). Active motion and multiple functionalities, distinguishing microrobots from mere passive carriers and conventional nanomedicines, can be achieved through external control with physical fields such as magnetism or ultrasound. Here we give an overview of the key challenges in the field of assisted reproductio

Electrospun nanofiber-based indicatorpaper sensing platform for fluorescence and visualization detection of norfloxacin.

Norfloxacin (NOR) residues in water pose a serious threat to human health via the food chain, necessitating the development of a rapid on-site antibiotic detection technique. In this work, we utilize electrostatic spinning technology that combines polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-rare earth metal Tb3+ complexes (ATP/Tb) to construct a new ternary film-based sensor for sensitive, quick, and convenient field testing of NOR in water. The operating mechanism is that the ternary system produces gradually enhanced bright green fluorescence at increasing concentrations

Fabrication and Evaluation of Embroidery-Based Electrode for EMG Smart Wear Using Moss Stitch Technique.

Wearable 2.0 research has been conducted on the manufacture of smart fitness wear that collects bio-signals through the wearing of a textile-based electrode. Among them, the electromyography (EMG) suit measures the electrical signals generated by the muscles to check their activity, such as contraction and relaxation. General gel-type electrodes have been reported to cause skin diseases due to an uncomfortable feel and skin irritation when attached to the skin for a long time. Dry electrodes of various materials are being developed to solve this problem. Previous research has reported EMG dete

Making bioinspired 3D-printed autonomic perspiring hydrogel actuators.

To mitigate the adverse effects of elevated temperatures, conventional rigid devices use bulky radiators, heat sinks and fans to dissipate heat from sensitive components. Unfortunately, these thermoregulation strategies are incompatible with soft robots, a growing field of technology that, like biology, builds compliant and highly deformable bodies from soft materials to enable functional adaptability. Here, we design fluidic elastomer actuators that autonomically perspire at elevated temperatures. This strategy incurs operational penalties (i.e., decreased actuation efficiency and loss of hyd

Flexible conducting polymer-based cellulose substrates for on-skin applications.

Flexible electroactive cellulose-based substrates were successfully fabricated via electropolymerization of either polypyrrole (PPy) or poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) onto platinum-coated cellulose substrates. Results showed that the conductive polymers were evenly deposited onto the platinum-coated cellulose substrates, respectively without compromising the submicro roughness topography of the substrate. In fact, nanoroughness feature was formed by the deposition of conductive polymers on the individual fibres of the cellulose paper,

Enhanced Performance of Microarchitectured PTFE-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator via Simple Thermal Imprinting Lithography for Self-Powered Electronics.

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) technology is an emerging field to harvest various kinds of mechanical energies available in our living environment. Nowadays, for industrial and large-scale area applications, developing the TENG with low device processing cost and high electrical output is a major issue to be resolved. Herein, we designed a TENG with low cost by employing the microgrooved architectured (MGA)-poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE; Teflon) and aluminum as triboelectric materials with opposite tendencies. Moreover, the MGA-PTFE was fabricated by a single-step, facile, and cost-effec

A self-powered one-touch blood extraction system: a novel polymer-capped hollow microneedle integrated with a pre-vacuum actuator.

Blood is the gold standard sample medium that can provide a wide variety of useful biological information for the diagnosis of various diseases. For portable point-of-care diagnosis, blood extraction systems have attracted attention as easier, safer, and more rapid methods of collecting small blood volumes. In this paper, we introduce a novel self-powered one-touch blood extraction system created by assembling a smart polymer-capped hollow microneedle in a pre-vacuum polydimethylsiloxane actuator. The optimized hollow microneedle was precisely fabricated by drawing lithography for minimally in

Advances in GelMA Hydrogel-Enabled Angiogenic-Osteogenic Coupling: From Structural Programming to Exogenous Cue Synergy.

Vascular-osteogenic coupling plays a central regulatory role in bone regeneration, but it is frequently impaired under pathological conditions, including aging, ischemia, and chronic inflammation, which compromises efficient bone repair. Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels, which combine extracellular matrix-like bioactivity, adjustable mechanical properties, and compatibility with three-dimensional biomanufacturing, have become a widely used material platform for vascularized bone regeneration. From the perspective of vascular-osteogenic coupling, this review reframes and synthesizes GelMA

Incremental versus bulk-fill techniques in Class I restorations using Smart Dentin Replacement Plus and Tetric N-Ceram: A prospective randomized split-mouth clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Polymerization shrinkage and postoperative sensitivity remain significant concerns in posterior composite restorations. Although bulk-fill composites simplify clinical procedures, their long-term clinical performance compared with incremental techniques remains controversial. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of Smart Dentin Replacement Plus (SDR+) and Tetric N-Ceram composites when placed using incremental and bulk-fill techniques in Class I pit and fissure cavities over a 6- and 12-month follow-up period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective

Hydrogel-Based Monitoring in Perioperative Anesthesia: A Conceptual Review and Translational Perspective.

Perioperative anesthesia monitoring increasingly extends beyond intermittent vital-sign measurements to continuous assessment of bioelectrical signals, tissue-device interfaces, local pressure, wound microenvironments, and selected biochemical markers. Hydrogels are attractive soft-interface materials because their water-rich networks can combine tissue-like mechanics, adhesion, ionic or electronic conductivity, microfluidic sampling, molecular recognition, and stimulus-responsive functions. This conceptual review evaluates hydrogel-based monitoring technologies from a perioperative perspectiv

Comparative Evaluation of Tensile Bond Strength of Three Different Glass Ionomer Cements in Silver Diamine Fluoride Treated Carious Dentin: An In Vitro Study.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is one of the most prevalent and significant public health problems impacting pediatric populations across both developed and developing countries. Given its profound effects on both oral and general health, contemporary strategies emphasize prevention as the primary approach rather than focusing solely on treatment. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has emerged as an effective preventive agent due to its caries-arresting property, thus inhibiting further decay. Building on this, the silver-modified atraumatic restorative technique (SMART) incorpora

New concepts and technologies in home care and ambulatory monitoring.

The world is becoming more and more health conscious. Society, health policy and patients' needs are all changing dramatically. The challenges society is currently facing are related to the increase in the aging population, changes in lifestyle, the need for healthcare cost containment and the need for improvement and monitoring of healthcare quality. The emphasis is put on prevention rather than on treatment. In addition, patients and health consumers are waiting for non-invasive or minimally-invasive diagnosis and treatment methods, for home care, short stays in hospital, enhancement of reha

Force-adjustable parallel-occlusion grasper.

BACKGROUND: During laparoscopic surgery, the operating surgeon grasps sections of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), including delicate structures, with long (270 mm) 5 mm diameter graspers. These grasping instruments increase the risk of iatrogenic damage due to crushing of the grasped tissue. This risk is increased significantly by diseases such as bacterial peritonitis and inflammatory bowel disease and reduced but not abolished by using parallel-closing laparoscopic instruments. This study describes the design and laboratory testing of fully developed and tested smart graspers capable of re

Ionic weaving network enables mechanically robust smart hydrogels with anti-swelling and anti-freezing capabilities.

Stretchable hydrogels hold great promise in cutting-edge fields such as flexible sensing and soft robotics. However, the poor mechanical properties and environmental intolerance restrict their practical applications in intelligent integrated systems. Herein, we construct ionic weaving hydrogels (IWHs) by pre-arranging polymer chains through force-induced restrictive drying, followed by the introduction of metal ions to form a 3D topological network with uniformly distributed dynamic coordination. This design dissipates energy through the synchronous dissociation of massive coordination bonds,

Superhygroscopic Multilayer Microfibrous Membrane for Cold Stress Management.

In subzero environments, moisture from exhaled breath and perspiration readily condenses and freezes inside protective gear, accelerating heat loss and triggering severe cold stress. To address this issue, this study developed a sandwich-structured microfibrous membrane that enabled rapid moisture capture, condensation/freezing inhibition, real-time thermal compensation, and solar-driven regeneration. Even at -21 °C, the membrane can still achieve a high water uptake of 1.41 g g-1 at 90% RH, while storing the absorbed water in a nonfrozen state and releasing appreciable absorption heat to crea

Dual-functionalized bilayer colorimetric hydrogel label combined with deep learning for intelligent monitoring of chicken freshness.

A dual-functional bilayer colorimetric hydrogel label was engineered in this study. It consists of a ZnO/SA-AG UV-shielding upper layer and a liposome-loaded natural pigment indicator layer with curcumin, anthocyanin and betanin, which are assembled into a 3 × 1 window array to construct three independent chromogenic units. The optimized 0.1 wt% ZnO provided strong UV blocking while maintaining transparency. Liposomal encapsulation enhanced pigment stability, yielding encapsulation efficiencies of 81.91 ± 2.10% for curcumin, 69.12 ± 1.90% for anthocyanin, and 71.08 ± 1.70% for betanin. The bil

Printing Beyond Fabrication: A Physicochemical Vision for Emerging Device Technologies.

The future of printing cannot be understood as the evolution of another manufacturing tool. Rather, it points to a science-driven paradigm in which functional matter is designed, formed, and integrated through controlled physicochemical events. In this visionary article, we look back to show how advances in nonlinear photochemistry, nanoscale heat transport, capillary flow, electrohydrodynamics, and liquid metal interfacial science have matured into powerful printing platforms, exampling two-photon polymerization, meniscus-guided printing, and liquid metal electronics. These histories reveal t
