Digital Color Vision Testing in Optic Neuropathy: Are Smartphone Apps Ready for Clinical Use?

BACKGROUND: Color vision impairment is a common feature of optic neuropathy, typically assessed with the printed Ishihara booklet. Smartphone-based alternatives are increasingly used, but their diagnostic performance in optic neuropathy is incompletely established. METHODS: In this prospective, single-center diagnostic study, 77 participants (42 healthy trichromats and 35 patients with unilateral optic neuropathy of various etiologies) completed 3 monocular color vision tests in a randomized order: a 17-plate Ishihara booklet, the PseudoChromatic ColorTest (PCCT) smartphone application, and t…

Ecological Assessment of Transdiagnostic Clinical Symptoms in Serious Mental Illness with Daily Smartphone Surveys.

Clinical symptoms in serious mental illness (SMI) fluctuate dynamically, yet standard interview-based assessments often fail to capture these daily changes. Smartphone-based ecological surveys offer a scalable approach to monitoring symptoms in naturalistic settings. We analyzed longitudinal data from 56 outpatients with psychotic or affective disorders who completed 12,984 daily surveys and 1,028 clinical assessments over one year. Machine learning models showed that smartphone surveys moderately estimated Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (rrm = 0.57; p < 0.001) and Young Mania Ratin…

Smartphone-integrated ratiometric fluorescent probe for on-site hydroxyl radical detection and arthritis imaging.

The hydroxyl radical (·OH), the most reactive oxygen species, significantly contributes to oxidative diseases but is difficult to detect in real-time due to its ultrashort half-life. Herein, we present a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe YCF for selective monitoring of ·OH. The probe YCF combines a tricyanofuran acceptor and dihydroquinoline donor, featuring an acetyl recognition site. Upon ·OH oxidation, YCF shows a distinct spectral shift: emission decreases at 608 nm and increases at 522 nm (λex = 425 nm), enabling self-calibrated detection (I522/I608). It exhibits high sensitivity (LOD =

Retrospective study of smartphone usage effects on tension-type headache prevalence in young adults.

Tension-type headache (TTH) is rising among young adults, potentially linked to increasing smartphone use. This retrospective study investigated the association between smartphone usage and TTH among 120 participants aged 18-30 years. Individuals with screen time exceeding 4 hours/day reported significantly more frequent and severe headaches. Posture and type of smartphone activity also influenced headache intensity. Thus, the findings call for behavioral interventions to mitigate TTH risk.

Deep learning-assisted smartphone-based quantitative microscopy for label-free peripheral blood smear analysis.

Hematologists evaluate alterations in blood cell enumeration and morphology to confirm peripheral blood smear findings through manual microscopic examination. However, routine peripheral blood smear analysis is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. Here, we propose using smartphone-based autofluorescence microscopy (Smart-AM) for imaging label-free blood smears at subcellular resolution with automatic hematological analysis. Smart-AM enables rapid and label-free visualization of morphological features of normal and abnormal blood cells (including leukocytes, erythrocytes, and thrombocytes).…

Ask Doctor Smartphone! An App to Help Physicians Manage Foreign Body Ingestions in Children.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body ingestion (FBI) represents the most common cause of emergent gastrointestinal endoscopy in children. FBI's management can be quite challenging for physicians because of the variability of the clinical presentation, and the decision tree becomes even more intricate because of patient-specific variables that must be considered in the pediatric age range (e.g., age of patients and neuropsychiatric disorders) in addition to the mere characteristics of the foreign body. We present an application for smartphones designed for pediatricians and pediatric surgeons based on the …
