The systemic increase in inflammatory mediator levels can induce diverse pathological disorders, including potentially thrombus formation, which may be lethal. Among the clinical conditions in which the formation of thrombi dictates the patient's prognosis, envenomation by Bothrops lanceolatus should be emphasized, as it can evolve to stroke, myocardial infarction and pulmonary embolism. Despite their life-threatening potential, the immunopathological events and toxins involved in these reactions remain poorly explored. Therefore, in the present study, we examined the immunopathological events

Snakebite envenomation (SBE) is an important public health issue that is now receiving renewed attention following its reclassification as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD). Most incidences occur in rural areas of resource-limited countries, as such, timely and appropriate medical care for SBE is often inaccessible. The administration of anti-snake venom serum (ASV) is the only effective definitive treatment of SBE, but treatment failure to available ASVs is not uncommon. Emerging evidence highlights the potential of small-molecule compounds as inhibitors against toxins of snake venom. This p

One of every two Americans will be bitten by an animal or by another person at some point. Bites account for approximately 1% of all visits to emergency rooms; injuries inflicted by dogs are most common. The bacteria involved in infection of bite wounds include Pasteurella multocida, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus intermedius, alpha-hemolytic streptococci, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, and other members of the oral flora. Anaerobic bacteria are present in approximately one-third of bite wounds and are associated with the formation of abscesses and with relatively serious infections. P. mul

Snakebites in unusual anatomical locations may lead to life-threatening consequences. Merrem's hump-nosed viper (Hypnale hypnale) is a medically important snake in Sri Lanka and India that causes many bites and envenomings. Their bites occur almost exclusively on upper and lower limbs and commonly result in local effects, with some patients developing systemic envenoming. No antivenom is available for treating envenoming by H. hypnale. We report an unusual case of H. hypnale bite on the tongue of a 10-month-old infant resulting in rapid local swelling of the tongue and floor of the mouth, requ

Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) commonly occurs in patients with wasting disease (e.g. malignancy) or with valves damaged following trauma due to intra-cardiac foreign body, scarring or marked turbulence. Although disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is well documented following viperine bite and the underlying mechanism of NBTE is thought to be DIC, there is no report of NBTE in humans following snake bite. We report a young male who following viperine bite developed local swelling, superficial gangrene of tissues at the site of bite, and oliguria and died following multi

BACKGROUND: Vipera palaestinae is the most common venomous snake in Israel. We report a case of V. palaestinae bite and antivenom-induced serum sickness during pregnancy and discuss the unique considerations relevant to the treatment of a pregnant woman envenomated by a snake.
CASE REPORT: A 46-year-old woman, G6P5, 14 weeks gestation, was admitted after a V. palaestinae bite on her right toe. On admission to the Emergency Department, physical examination included the following vital signs and findings: pulse 76 beats/min, blood pressure 90/60 mm Hg, nausea, vomiting, foot and distal leg swel

Snake bites are a major public health problem in the tropics but they have a low incidence in Europe and are responsible for few deaths each year. The incidence is higher in children than in adults but no difference in severity seems to be observed between children and adults. In France, snake envenomations are due mainly to Vipera aspis and Vipera berus. The clinical presentation is usually limited to a local syndrome with pain and local inflammatory edema, but systemic signs occur in 17% of cases. Clinical grading published by the Institut Pasteur in Paris helps to assess the severity of env…

Little is known about the effects of bites by the rare viperid snake Eristicophis macmahonii. A 31-year-old Belgian man, who keeps these animals as a hobby, was bitten on a finger by one of his pets while trying to give it some medicine. The patient developed syncope, followed by a sudden extensive skin rash and massive edema of the arm. He recovered completely, except for a small area of limited tissue necrosis on the bitten finger.

A 47-year-old man received a snouted cobra (Naja annulifera) snake bite to his genitals while on holiday in South Africa. His penis and scrotum were noted to be swollen, deep purple in color, and painful on hospital admission. Scrotal necrosis was diagnosed, and he received multiple doses of a non-specific snake venom antiserum and broad-spectrum antibiotics. Although no neurological sequelae developed, he did require hemodialysis due to acute kidney injury. After stabilizing, he was repatriated to the Netherlands for further treatment and has since made a full recovery.

The nature of addiction depends on various factors. The tendency to have already used several addictive substances and to seek high sensation experiences as a result of specific personality traits may lead to extreme and peculiar forms of addictions. Even belonging to specific social and cultural background may lead to such forms of addiction such as intentional snake bite and willful envenomation. In this article, we have discussed the peculiarities and practical insight of such addiction to snake venom. The possible molecular mechanism behind such venom-mediated reinforcement has also been h

We describe a case of a 22-year-old male who presented to our facility 1 hour after a snake bite, which he identified as the desert black snake. He presented with severe weakness and respiratory distress. He was treated with polyvalent antivenom and observed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with resolution of his respiratory symptoms. He developed paresthesias locally around his wound and later complained of diplopia. Two days later, he had total resolution of his symptoms. This is one of the only clinical reports of neurotoxic effects after Walterinnesia morgani envenomation.

India is home to a diverse spectrum of medically-significant snakes accounting for one of the world's largest burdens of envenoming, morbidity and mortality. Indian polyspecific antivenom is derived from the venom of four snake species (Daboia russelii, Echis carinatus, Naja naja and Bungarus caeruleus), considered to be responsible for the majority of snakebite morbidity and mortality in India. The treatment of envenoming from other less-commonly encountered venomous snake species can be challenging. In this report, we describe the case of a 32-year-old male who presented with local swelling

The myotoxicity and neurotoxicity of common tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) venom are major factors in the pathogenesis of envenomation in the dog. Histological examination of the tissues of experimentally envenomed dogs has demonstrated the importance of muscle damage in affecting the clinical syndrome of tiger snake envenomation. Within one hour of injection of the venom into dogs, there was selective involvement of some muscles. Cardiac and smooth muscles were not significantly affected. The severity of myofibre damage was influenced by the amount of venom injected. Immobilisation under gen

Snake envenomation is responsible for more than 130,000 deaths worldwide. In Brazil, the Crotalus rattlesnake is responsible for the second largest number of accidental snake bites in the country. Although there are many descriptions of the clinical and biochemical effects of Crotalus envenoming, there are few works describing the molecular events in the central nervous system of an organism due to envenomation. In this study, we analyzed the proteomic effect of Crotalus durissus terrificus snake venom on mice cerebellums. To monitor the envenomation over time, changes in the protein abundance…

The socioeconomic impact of snakebites in India is largely attributed to a subset of snake species commonly known as the 'big four'. However, envenoming by a range of other clinically important yet neglected snakes, a.k.a. the 'neglected many', also adds to this burden. The current approach of treating bites from these snakes with the 'big four' polyvalent antivenom is ineffective. While the medical significance of various species of cobras, saw-scaled vipers, and kraits is well-established, the clinical impact of pit vipers from regions such as the Western Ghats, northeastern India, and the A

In this study, we have developed a gold nanoparticle based simple, rapid lateral flow assay (LFA) for detection of Indian Cobra venom (CV) and Russell's viper venom (RV). Presently, there is no rapid, reliable, and field diagnostic test available in India, where snake bite cases are rampant. Therefore, this test has an immense potential from the public health point of view. The test is based on the principle of the paper immunochromatography assay for detection of two snake venom species using polyvalent antisnake venom antibodies (ASVA) raised in equines and species-specific antibodies (SSAbs
