A brief treatment program for acquired neurogenic stuttering following cyberknife radiation surgery: An experimental case study report and listener perception study.

Acquired neurogenic stuttering (ANS) is a speech fluency disorder that is characterized by speech disfluencies similar to those seen in developmental stuttering (DS). The disorder typically has an onset in adulthood following a neurological health condition such as stroke, brain trauma or neurodegenerative disease. This paper reports on an experimental brief virtual fluency treatment with an adult male who developed ANS following radiation surgery for the treatment of a brain tumour. Following the treatment, the participant showed a notable improvement in speech fluency, greater acceptance of

Advancements in Preclinical Models for NF2-Related Schwannomatosis Research.

NF2-related Schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN) remains a disorder with few effective treatment options. Patients develop vestibular schwannomas (VSs) on both auditory nerves, which gradually impair hearing and often result in significant communication difficulties, social withdrawal, and higher rates of depression. Progress in understanding NF2-SWN biology and translating discoveries into therapies has been slowed by the absence of robust animal models that faithfully reproduce both tumor behavior and the associated neurological deficits. In this review, we summarized the development of animal models t

Adaptive and maladaptive behavior in children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome.

Children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) exhibit deficits in adaptive behavior but systematic studies using objective measures are lacking. This descriptive study assessed adaptive functioning in 19 children with SMS using the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS). Maladaptive behavior was examined through parent questionnaires and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Cognitive functioning was evaluated with an age-appropriate test. Children scored below average on VABS Communication, Daily Living Skills, and Socialization scales. Learning problems and hyperactivity scales on the Conner's P

The effect of alienation on depression among Chinese caregivers of children with autism: family resilience as a moderator.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in China often encounter stigma and social isolation, which may heighten alienation and increase depression risk. Family resilience-the strengths and resources within the family system, may help protect caregiver mental health. This study examined the association between alienation and depression among Chinese caregivers of children with ASD and tested whether family resilience moderates this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 205 caregivers in Jilin Province assessed alienation, depressive symptoms, and fa

Social anxiety and life impact in adults who clutter and stutter: a comparative study with pure stuttering.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is frequently reported to coexist with stuttering; however, its occurrence in the context of cluttering remains largely unexplored. This study determined whether SAD co-occurs in individuals with disfluency after differentiating those with cluttering with stuttering from those with stuttering alone. Forty participants aged ≥18 years with a chief complaint of stuttering-like disfluencies (SDF) were included. Based on established criteria, participants were categorized into two groups: cluttering with stuttering (n = 14) and stuttering alone (n = 26). All participan

Behavioral phenotypes and neurobiological mechanisms in the Shank1 mouse model for autism spectrum disorder: A translational perspective.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders, characterized by early-onset deficits in social behavior and communication across multiple contexts, together with restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. ASD is among the most heritable neuropsychiatric conditions with heritability estimates higher than 80%, and while available evidence points to a complex set of genetic factors, the SHANK (also known as ProSAP) gene family has emerged as one of the most promising candidates. Several genetic Shank mouse models for ASD were g

Association of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor-Related Gene Variants with the Severity of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Exposure to environmental chemicals, such as dioxin, is known to have adverse effects on the homeostasis of gonadal steroids, thereby potentially altering the sexual differentiation of the brain to express autistic traits. Dioxin-like chemicals act on the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), polymorphisms, and mutations of AhR-related gene may exert pathological influences on sexual differentiation of the brain, causing autistic traits. To ascertain the relationship between AhR-related gene polymorphisms and autism susceptibility, we identified genotypes of them in patients and controls and determ

Social anxiety disorder, a lifelong disorder? A review of the spontaneous remission and its predictors.

OBJECTIVE: Based on clinical observations, social anxiety disorder (SAD) is usually described as a chronic disorder. Its natural course in the community is less clear. METHOD: The present review summarises prospective and retrospective spontaneous remission rates of SAD in the community and its predictors that were published after 1987. Remission rates were specified as partial, defined as still having social fears, but not fulfilling the diagnostic criteria, and full, defined as having no social fears anymore. RESULTS: In prospective studies, remission rates of SAD varied between 36% and 93

Characteristics of fetal anticonvulsant syndrome associated autistic disorder.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical features and frequency of autistic disorder or Asperger syndrome (AS; according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition [DSM-IV] criteria) in children exposed to anticonvulsant medication in utero. During a 20-year study period, 626 children were born in Aberdeen to mothers taking antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). The study examined long-term effects of prenatal exposure to AEDs in 260 children (122 males, 138 females). Of these, 26 (16 males) were reported by parents to have social or behavioural difficulties. Eleven c

Effects of early-life stress on social functioning in depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis of mouse and rat studies.

Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders worldwide, in which social impairments negatively impact daily functioning of those affected. Early stressful experiences have lasting effects on brain development and behavior, which further amplifies vulnerability to this disorder. While the link between early-life stress (ELS) and higher risk of depression is well-established, it remains unclear whether stress timing exposure-i.e., pregestational stress, prenatal ELS or postnatal ELS- affects social functioning severity in depressed individuals. Rodent models are of translational valu

Sex talks-experiences with and barriers to communication about sexuality with healthcare staff among patients with anxiety disorder in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Previous research among diverse patient populations suggests that healthcare staff routinely do not talk about sexuality with their patients even when such talks are highly indicated and relevant. AIM: In this study we sought to investigate how patients at outpatient anxiety clinics in Denmark experience sexual communication with healthcare staff and what barriers they encounter in this connection. METHODS: We employed a survey design from January 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019. In collaboration with 11 outpatient anxiety clinics in Denmark, patients with a primary diagnosis of panic

Phase-IIa randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled, parallel group trial on anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left and right tempo-parietal junction in autism spectrum disorder-StimAT: study protocol for a clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impaired social communication and interaction, and stereotyped, repetitive behaviour and sensory interests. To date, there is no effective medication that can improve social communication and interaction in ASD, and effect sizes of behaviour-based psychotherapy remain in the low to medium range. Consequently, there is a clear need for new treatment options. ASD is associated with altered activation and connectivity patterns in brain areas which process social information. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a techniqu

Implicit learning seems to come naturally for children with autism, but not for children with specific language impairment: Evidence from behavioral and ERP data.

UNLABELLED: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and specific language impairment (SLI) are two neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication skills. These skills are thought to develop largely through implicit-or automatic-learning mechanisms. The aim of the current paper was to investigate the role of implicit learning abilities in the atypical development of communication skills in ASD and SLI. In the current study, we investigated Response Times (RTs) and Event Related Potentials (ERPs) during implicit learning on a Serial Reaction Time (SRT) task i

Consultation and collaboration programs for individuals with autism.

Students with autism present a challenge to the SLP not only because of the severity of their communication disorders, but also because of the great variety of learning styles and social skills. Collaboration- and consultation-based service delivery systems offer an alternative to traditional therapy for these students. This model uses the strength of a team approach and permits strategies for improving communication that are not possible in other environments.

Somatization: social control and illness production in a religious cult.

The aim of this ethnographic work is twofold: first, to document the specifics of the illness experience within the highly controlling milieu of a religious cult; second, to explore the connection between somatization and social control in this particular context. Anthropologists have long realized that in order to comprehend disease etiology, one must examine both biological and sociocultural processes, as both are implicated in the production of illness. Illness experiences of those members of the cult described here appeared to be direct responses to extreme intrapsychic and social control:

Are Autism Spectrum Disorder and Asexuality Connected?

Asexuality is a lack of sexual attraction to any gender. There is some evidence to suggest that many self-identified asexuals have a formal diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder which is characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, as well as by restricted and repetitive interests and behaviors. Additionally, the literature shows that asexuality and lack of sexual attraction or low sexual interest is overrepresented in people with autism spectrum disorder compared with neurotypical samples. Nevertheless, no studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship betwe

[Early attention and specific intervention programs with autism spectrum disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that is characterised by qualitative deficiencies in social interaction and in communication, behaviour that is characterised by repetitive stereotyped patterns, and a restricted repertoire of interests and activities. DEVELOPMENT AND CONCLUSIONS: Early detection and diagnosis of this disorder by means of neuropaediatric techniques and procedures plays a decisive role in being able to set up an interdisciplinary therapeutic approach, in which specific early intervention programmes are noted for their effectiveness.
