The Role of the Social Environment in Alcohol or Drug Relapse of Probationers Recently Released from Jail.

OBJECTIVES: Many individuals involved with the criminal justice system also meet criteria for a substance use disorder. Social support has been identified as an important factor in alcohol and drug relapse, and also for individuals who are incarcerated. The purposes of this study were to describe personal characteristics and the social networks of adult male probationers with substance use disorders and test how changes in social networks related to alcohol or drug use after release from jail. METHODS: Fifty adult male probationers who were recently incarcerated (60 to 210 days prior to scree

Controlled human infection with SARS-CoV-2 to study COVID-19 vaccines and treatments: bioethics in Utopia.

A number of papers have appeared recently arguing for the conclusion that it is ethically acceptable to infect healthy volunteers with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 as part of research projects aimed at developing COVID-19 vaccines or treatments. This position has also been endorsed in a statement by a working group for the WHO. The papers generally argue that controlled human infection (CHI) is ethically acceptable if (1) the risks to participants are low and therefore acceptable, (2) the scientific quality of the research is high, (3) the research has high social value, (4)

The impact of two education methods on knowledge of schistosomiasis transmission and prevention among schoolchildren in a rural community in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The objective of this study was to analyse the effect of using two health education approaches on knowledge of transmission and prevention of schistosomiasis of school children living in a rural endemic area in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The 87 children participating in the study were divided into three groups based on gender, age and presence or absence of Schistosoma mansoni infection. In the first group the social representation model and illness experience was used. In the second group, we used the cognitive model based on the transmission of information. The third group, the contr

Coupled information diffusion--pest dynamics models predict delayed benefits of farmer cooperation in pest management programs.

Worldwide, the theory and practice of agricultural extension system have been dominated for almost half a century by Rogers' "diffusion of innovation theory". In particular, the success of integrated pest management (IPM) extension programs depends on the effectiveness of IPM information diffusion from trained farmers to other farmers, an important assumption which underpins funding from development organizations. Here we developed an innovative approach through an agent-based model (ABM) combining social (diffusion theory) and biological (pest population dynamics) models to study the role of

On bias and balance: Updating agentic and communal self-beliefs in social anxiety and depression.

Cognitive models propose that biased information processing in social anxiety (SA) and depression facilitates negative and inhibits the processing of positive self-information. These biases are postulated to reinforce persistent negative views of the self. Biased updating of self-beliefs in response to valanced new information in both SA and depression is theoretically postulated. The results, however, are not fully consistent with theoretical postulations. Importantly, self-information is structured around two main domains - agency (e.g., competence, assertiveness) and communion (e.g., warmth

Social networks and implementation of evidence-based practices in public youth-serving systems: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The present study examines the structure and operation of social networks of information and advice and their role in making decisions as to whether to adopt new evidence-based practices (EBPs) among agency directors and other program professionals in 12 California counties participating in a large randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 38 directors, assistant directors, and program managers of county probation, mental health, and child welfare departments. Grounded-theory analytic methods were used to identify themes related to EBP adoption and netwo

Preserved social behavior recognition in patients with epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: Recognition of the social behaviors is a multifaceted function on the borderline between neuroscience and social science. In neurological patients, it may be influenced by brain damage, cognition, and psychological distress. This study aimed to clarify whether social behavior recognition can be preserved in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and whether empathy, executive functions and anxiety may play an influential role. METHODS: The Social Situations Test (SST), Empathy Questionnaire (EQ), State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Phonemic Word Fluency (PWF), and Raven Colo

Public speaking avoidance as a treatment moderator for social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) have both garnered empirical support for the effective treatment of social anxiety disorder. However, not every patient benefits equally from either treatment. Identifying moderators of treatment outcome can help to better understand which treatment is best suited for a particular patient. METHODS: Forty-nine individuals who met criteria for social anxiety disorder were assessed as part of a randomized controlled trial comparing 12 weeks of CBT and ACT. Pre-treatment avoidance of social s

Social structure and Escherichia coli sharing in a group-living wild primate, Verreaux's sifaka.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological models often use information on host social contacts to predict the potential impact of infectious diseases on host populations and the efficiency of control measures. It can be difficult, however, to determine whether social contacts are actually meaningful predictors of transmission. We investigated the role of host social structure in the transmission of Escherichia coli in a wild population of primates, Verreaux's sifakas (Propithecus verreauxi). Using multilocus sequence typing (MLST), we compared genetic similarities between E. coli isolates from different ind

Hypervigilance and avoidance in visual attention in children with social phobia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Attentional bias towards threat in socially anxious adults is well documented; however, research on this bias in children with social phobia is rather scarce. The present study investigates whether the hypervigilance-avoidance hypothesis also applies to children with social phobia. METHODS: Thirty children (aged 8-12) with social phobia and 43 control children participated in an eye-tracking experiment while their attentional distribution was recorded. Social anxiety was induced in half of the children before the eye-tracking task. Stimuli were presented for 3000 ms

Effectiveness of WeChat-group-based parental health education in preventing unintentional injuries among children aged 0-3: randomized controlled trial in Shanghai.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injuries to children are a major public health problem. The online social media is a potential way to implement health education for caregivers in online communities. Using WeChat, a free and popular social media service in China, this study evaluated the effectiveness of social online community-based parental health education in preventing unintentional injuries in children aged 0-3. METHODS: We recruited 365 parents from two community health centers in Shanghai and allocated them into intervention and control groups randomly. Follow-up lasted for one year. The inte

The psychophysiological impact of childhood autism spectrum disorder on siblings.

OBJECTIVE: The negative impact of caring for a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on parents' psychophysiological functioning has been widely evidenced. However, siblings, who also face emotional, social and physical challenges associated with having a brother/sister with ASD, have been less widely studied. This study examined the psychophysiological impact of childhood ASD on siblings. METHODS: A sample of 25 siblings of children with ASD (and their mothers) and a control group of 20 siblings of neuro-typical children (and their mothers) completed questionnaires assessing: (a) demogra

Maternal immune activation in nonhuman primates alters social attention in juvenile offspring.

BACKGROUND: Sickness during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of offspring neurodevelopmental disorders. Rodent models have played a critical role in establishing causal relationships and identifying mechanisms of altered brain and behavior development in pups prenatally exposed to maternal immune activation (MIA). We recently developed a novel nonhuman primate model to bridge the gap between human epidemiological studies and rodent models of prenatal immune challenge. Our initial results demonstrated that rhesus monkeys given the viral mimic synthetic double-stranded RNA (polyino

Stakeholder Perspectives on Community Tobacco Use and the Implementation of Tobacco Use Treatment in Eastern Ethiopia: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking tobacco causes over 8 million deaths annually and is the leading cause of non-communicable diseases globally. In Eastern Ethiopia, tobacco use is culturally ingrained, often combined with alcohol and khat use. This study explores stakeholders' experiences addressing tobacco use in the region, aiming to identify obstacles and opportunities for implementing telephone counseling as an evidence-based strategy to support tobacco cessation. METHODS: This is a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured, face-to-face qualitative interviews to gather data from March - Apri

Association Between Digital Front Doors and Social Care Use for Community-Dwelling Adults in England: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Requests for public social care support can be made through an online portal. These digital "front doors" can help people navigate complex social care systems and access services. These systems can be set up in different ways, but there is little evidence about the impact of alternative arrangements. Digital front-door systems should help people better access services, particularly low-intensity services (high-intensity care is likely to require a full in-person assessment). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between 2 primary digital front door arrangement

Understanding the barriers and facilitators to safe infant sleep for mothers of preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: To identify barriers and facilitators to adherence to safe sleep practices (SSP) among mothers of preterm infants using qualitative methodology. DESIGN: We conducted 23 in-depth interviews in English or Spanish with mothers of preterm infants who were recently discharged from four hospitals, utilizing a grounded-theory approach and framework of the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitudes, perceived control, social norms). RESULTS: For attitudes, mothers' fear about their infants' vulnerable preterm state related to suffocation, apnea of prematurity, and reflux influenced infant slee

The tridimensional personality of male heroin users treated with methadone in Taiwan.

It was our assumption that male heroin users have the personality traits of high impulsivity and low social interaction. Compliance regarding methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) is hypothesized to be related to personality features. We recruited 43 patients that had been receiving MMT and 43 healthy volunteers. All participants completed a Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ). Information related to the Opiate Treatment Index (OTI) was gathered from the heroin group. The personality dimensions in the heroin user group and the control group were compared. We further investigated the a

Exploring the cognitive phenotype of autism: weak "central coherence" in parents and siblings of children with autism: II. Real-life skills and preferences.

Information on everyday life activities and preferences in both social and nonsocial domains was obtained from parents and children who had taken part in an experimental study of central coherence. Comparisons were made between parents who had a son with autism, parents with a dyslexic son, and families without a history of developmental disorder, as well as the male siblings in these families. Data on everyday preferences and abilities were elicited by means of an experimental questionnaire. Significant group differences in social and nonsocial preferences were found, suggesting that some par

Stigma toward female smokers: gendered perceptions and moral judgment.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the gendered perceptions surrounding female smoking in Saudi Arabia, where tobacco use is shaped not only by health concerns but also by deeply rooted social norms. METHODS: Employing a qualitative approach, the study draws on semi-structured interviews with 35 Saudi adults (20 women and 15 men), aged 18 and older. RESULTS: Thematic analysis revealed a clear gendered double standard in smoking-related stigma. Women's smoking was judged more harshly than men's and was often interpreted as a violation of femininity, modesty, moral propriety, and family reputatio
