Early-life stress alters adult social and coping behaviors in a sex-specific and domain-dependent manner.

Early Life Stress (ELS) increases the risk for mental health issues in humans, notably in major depression and anxiety disorders. ELS is fre … et stress (AS). ELS, AS, and control animals (reared under normal conditions) underwent open field, social interaction, and tail suspension tests. In open field, AS mice spent significantly less time in center than controls. Social interaction showed significant effects of treatment and sex, with stress exposure increasing familiar-mouse interaction time and reducin …

Cortical representation of group social communication in bats.

Social interactions occur in group settings and are mediated by communication signals that are exchanged between individuals, often using vocalizations. The neural representation of group social communication remains largely unexplored. We conducted simultaneous wireless electrophysiological recordings from the frontal cortices of groups of Egyptian fruit bats engaged in both spontaneous and task-induced vocal interactions. We found that the activity of single neurons distinguished between vocalizations produced by self and by others, as well as among specific individuals. Coordinated neural a…

High social support buffers the effects of 5-HTTLPR genotypes within social anxiety disorder.

An interaction between genetic aspects and environmental stressors has been suggested with regard to the etiology of social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, potential protective interplays which might decrease the risk of SAD have not been considered so far. Thus, we analyzed the interaction between 5-HTTLPR and differing levels of social support regarding SAD. The sample was based on participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania, Germany. We used the triallelic genotype of 5-HTTLPR and longitudinal data of social support. Final analyses were conducted in 79 individuals with SAD and 1,708 w

The Relationship between Social Reward Behavior and Mesolimbic Dopamine Release.

Deficits in social behavior, such as reduced motivation and social avoidance, are key symptoms in several psychiatric disorders. Distinct modes of reward, such as drug and social, may rely on different dopamine release patterns in the mesolimbic pathway. We investigated the relationship between social reward behaviors and dopamine release elicited by phasic and tonic stimulation patterns in C57BL/6J mice. Social conditioned place preference was used to assess motivation for social interaction, and in vivo fixed potential amperometry was used to measure nucleus accumbens dopamine release before…

Older Adults' Resilience Against Impact of Lifestyle Changes During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Older adults were expected to experience a decline in physical activities and an increase in social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We investigated the changes in living conditions of 508 older adults (79.70 years ± 0.88) before (from July to December 2019) and during (in August 2020) the pandemic. We compared the mean score for the same individual instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), frequency of going out, exercise, and social interaction at two-time points. We also examined the influence of living arrangement (living alone or not) on the frequency of…

Studying "natural" eye movements in an "unnatural" social environment: The influence of social activity, framing, and sub-clinical traits on gaze aversion.

Experimental psychologists frequently present participants with social stimuli (videos or pictures) and measure behavioural responses. Such designs are problematic in that they remove the potential for social interaction and inadvertently restrict our eyes multifaceted nature as a tool to both perceive and communicate with others. The aim of this study was to develop a new paradigm within which we can easily and reliably measure the influence of top-down processes (belief), social activity (talking and listening), and possible clinical traits (gaze anxiety, and social interaction difficulties)…

The effects of creative drama activities on preschoolers' peer relationships and humor skills and the predictive role of humor.

INTRODUCTION: Peer relationships and humor skills may be important for the social-emotional skills of preschool-aged children. Creative drama activities offer opportunities for role-playing, social interaction, and self-expression through imagination, which can support the development of these skills. However, studies examining peer relationships and humor skills together within a creative drama framework remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of creative drama activities on preschool children's peer relationships and humor skills and to examine the predictive role of humo…

MR imaging central thalamic deep brain stimulation restored autistic-like social deficits in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Social deficit is a core symptom in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been proposed as a … oked network activity and modulation. Second, we investigated whether CTN-DBS intervention improves social interaction in a valproic acid-exposed ASD rat offspring model. METHODS: Brain regions activated through CTN-DBS by using a magnetic resonance (MR)-compatible neural probe, which is capable of inducing site-selective microstimulations during functional MRI (fM …

Chronic Social Defeat Stress Gives Rise to Social Avoidance Through Fear Learning.

Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS), a widely used rodent model of stress, reliably leads to decreased social interaction in stress susceptible animals. Here, we investigate a role for fear learning in this response using 129Sv/Ev mice, a strain that is more vulnerable to CSDS than the commonly used C57BL/6 strain. We first demonstrate that defeated 129Sv/Ev mice avoid a CD-1 mouse, but not a conspecific, indicating that motivation to socialize is intact in this strain. CD-1 avoidance is characterized by approach behavior that results in running in the opposite direction, activity that is cons…

Behavioral and neurochemical effects of nociceptin/orphanin FQ receptor activation in the social defeat protocol.

The nociceptin/orphanin FQ receptor (NOP receptor) has wide expression in the nervous system and is involved in neurotransmitter release. However, the role of the NOPR in depression is not widely recognized. This study aims to evaluate behavioral and biochemical effects of the NOPR agonist Ro 65-6570 in mice submitted to social defeat protocol. The open-field test, social interaction test, and tail suspension test were applied to evaluate depressive behavior in male Swiss mice. Blood and brain tissue samples were obtained to evaluate the oxidative stress. The NOP agonist, Ro 65-6570 (1 mg/kg),…

Exploring the role of orexins in the modulation of social reward.

RATIONALE: positive social interactions are essential for mental health, by offering emotional support, reducing stress levels, and promoting resilience against drugs of abuse effects. However, not all individuals perceive social interaction as rewarding. OBJECTIVES: the goal of this study was to investigate whether the modulation of the orexin system can shift passive coping and non-social behavior (vulnerable) to active coping and social behavior (resilient). This knowledge is primordial for stress- and addiction-related disorders, and for other psychiatric disorders involving impairment in…

Enhancing Cognitive Functions of Older Adults With Software Robot: Longitudinal Exploratory Field Study.

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of dementia continues to rise and demands scalable, nonpharmacological interventions. Digital cognitive training has expanded, but many older adults, who have limited digital literacy, struggle to sustain use. We designed an intervention that integrates social interaction, reward-based engagement, and an artificial intelligence (AI) conversational agent, which aims to reduce these barriers and support continuous participation. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether a 12-week digital cognitive training program improves cognitive function in older adults. It al…

No transfer of arousal from other's eyes in Williams syndrome.

Typically developing humans automatically synchronize their arousal levels, resulting in pupillary contagion, or spontaneous adaptation of pupil size to that of others. This phenomenon emerges in infancy and is believed to facilitate social interaction. Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic condition characterized by a hyper-social personality and social interaction challenges. Pupillary contagion was examined in individuals with WS (n = 44), age-parallel-matched typically developing children and adults (n = 65), and infants (n = 79). Bayesian statistics were used. As a group, people with WS did…

Navigating Aging and Social Bonds: How Virtual Networks Shape Friendships Among Older Adult Women.

Friendships in later life play a crucial role in providing emotional support, social interaction, and a sense of belonging, particularly for older adults who lack family support. Traditionally, friendships were maintained through face-to-face interactions, phone calls, and written letters. However, with the advent of digital technology, virtual networks have emerged as vital tools in sustaining these connections, particularly for older adults with limited mobility or geographical separation. This study examined the advantages, challenges, and emotional impact of virtual friendships in later li…

The Human Dynamic Clamp Reveals the Fronto-Parietal Network Linking Real-Time Social Coordination and Cognition.

How does the brain allow us to interact with others? Social neuroscience has already provided some answers to these questions but has tended to treat high-level, cognitive interpretations of social behavior separately from the sensorimotor mechanisms upon which they rely. The goal here is to identify the underlying neural processes and mechanisms linking sensorimotor coordination and intention attribution. We combine the human dynamic clamp, a novel paradigm for studyingrealistic social behavior, with high-resolution electroencephalography. The collection of humanness and intention attribution

Infant social withdrawal with parents and strangers-The role of parental sensitivity and depression.

Infant social withdrawal is an early indicator of infant distress linked to adverse socio-emotional development. We hypothesized that parental sensitivity moderates an association between parental depression (PPD) and infant social withdrawal. We examined these associations cross-sectionally in 471 families in which mothers screened positive for PPD, assessing infant social withdrawal (mean infant age 3.6 months) during interactions with mothers, fathers/co-parents and a stranger. No significant association was found between parental PPD symptom severity and infant social withdrawal in interac

Adult neurogenesis in the ventral hippocampus decreased among animal models of neurodevelopmental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, along with restricted and repetitive behaviors. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to ASD, with prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) and nicotine being linked to increased risk. Impaired adult hippocampal neurogenesis, particularly in the ventral region, is thought to play a role in the social deficits observed in ASD. METHODS: In this study, we investigated social behavior and adult hippocampal neurogenesis in C57BL/6J mice prena…

RO 15-4513 and FG 7142 reverse the reduction in social behavior caused by ethanol in mice.

Ethanol (2 g/kg) reduces the time spent in social interaction and increases locomotor activity of pairs of NIH Swiss mice. This study examined whether two benzodiazepine receptor inverse agonists, RO 15-4513 (3 mg/kg) and FG 7142 (30 mg/kg) are able to reverse these effects. Neither drug alone altered social behavior, but both significantly attenuated the effect of ethanol on social interaction. They did not affect the ethanol-induced increase in motor activity. Benzodiazepine receptor inverse agonists thus appear capable of antagonizing some, but not all of the behavioral effects of ethanol i…
