A symptom network and latent profile analysis of depression in Chinese older adults: Examining the roles of loneliness and digital exclusion.

BACKGROUND: Digital technology is frequently regarded as a tool to alleviate loneliness and enhance mental health among older adults, yet its effectiveness remains contested. This study explores whether digital exclusion moderates the association between loneliness and depressive, and examines symptom structure and depressive subtypes. METHODS: Drawing on data form the 2018 and 2020 waves of the CHARLS (N = 13,719), we employed fixed-effect and mixed-effect models to assess the effect of loneliness on depressive and the moderating role of digital exclusion. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was u

Relationships first: Formal and informal home care of older adults in Sweden.

To a great extent, older people in Sweden, often with extensive care needs, are cared for in their own home. Support is often needed from both family and professional caregivers. This study aimed to describe and analyse different aspects of health, functioning and social networks, and how they relate to formal and informal care in the home among older adults. Analyses were performed utilising data from the OCTO-2 study, with a sample of 317 people living in Jönköping County, aged 75, 80, 85 or 90 years, living in their own homes. Data were collected with in-person-testing. Based on receipt of

Chlamydia trachomatis testing among young people: what is the role of stigma?

BACKGROUND: To reach young people for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) testing, new web-based strategies are used to offer testing via young people's sexual and social networks. The success of such peer-driven strategies depends on whether individuals disclose their own testing and encourage others to get tested. We assessed whether public- and self-stigma would hamper these behaviours, by comparing anticipations and experiences relating to these issues in young men and women who already tested or never tested for CT. METHODS: Participants were recruited at an STI clinic and two schools in the Neth

Bridging the gap between antiretroviral access and adherence in Mexico.

The goal in this article is to examine social problems associated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) adherence in Mexico and the related challenges for Mexican persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs). The study was conducted from the perspective of infected and affected individuals. The authors completed 64 in-depth interviews with heterosexual male and female PLWHAs, as well as with some key individuals from their social network. Following the principles of grounded theory, they carried out inductive analysis to create codes and organize central themes. The authors identified pro

Factors associated with subjective oral health among older adults aged 65 and over living alone: the role of social capital.

BACKGROUND: With the global increase in the number of older adults and single-person households, attention is increasingly being directed toward older adults living alone as a vulnerable population in public health. These individuals are particularly susceptible to deficiencies in social capital, one of the key social determinants of health. However, research on the relationship between social capital and oral health among older adults living alone remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the factors associated with oral health in this population, with a specific focus on social

The Arabic Lubben Social Network Scale-6: Psychometric Validation, Measurement Invariance, and Social Support Profiles in Arabic-Speaking Older Adults.

This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Arabic version of the 6-Item Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6). The LSNS-6 was translated, culturally adapted, and administered, alongside the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS), to 327 Arabic-speaking adults aged 60 years and older. Internal consistency was examined using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) tested the hypothesized two-factor structure (Family and Friends), and measurement invariance was evaluated across key sociodemographic and lifestyle variables. Co

Altered Topological Properties of Brain Networks in Social Anxiety Disorder: A Resting-state Functional MRI Study.

Recent studies involving connectome analysis including graph theory have yielded potential biomarkers for mental disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate the differences of resting-state network between patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and healthy controls (HCs), as well as to distinguish between individual subjects using topological properties. In total, 42 SAD patients and the same number of HCs underwent resting functional MRI, and the topological organization of the whole-brain functional network was calculated using graph theory. Compared with the controls, the patient

Family is all that matters: Prospective associations between structure, function, and quality of social relations and self-rated health in the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP).

We prospectively examined the association between structure, function, and quality of social relations and self-rated health (SRH) in U.S. adults followed over 10 years in the population-based National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP). Large social network and high positive/negative social support were measured at baseline and defined as the highest quartile. These three binary measures were reported from friends, family, and partner and combined into a multifactorial exposure variable. SRH was measured through a 5-point Likert scale and dichotomised. Odds ratios (OR) for poor SR

Exploring social support for eating disorders in Indigenous contexts.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of cultural and ethnic background. However, culturally situated understandings of eating disorders are important for optimizing care. Moreover, social support is widely recognized as a key component in the recovery of eating disorders. Established Euro-Western treatment models generally conceptualize social support as the role family and close friends play in providing emotional and practical support during a loved one's recovery. Indigenous perspectives of social support, which may include connection to ancestors, community, non-human

Social capital and rates of gonorrhea and syphilis in the United States: spatial regression analyses of state-level associations.

We conducted spatial regression analysis to account for spatial clustering of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and to examine the state-level association between social capital (using Putnam's public use data set) and rates of gonorrhea and syphilis. We conducted the analysis for the 48 contiguous states of the United States for 1990, 1995, and 2000 and controlled for the effects of regional variation in STD rates, and for state variation in poverty, income inequality, racial composition, and percentage aged 15-34 years. We compared the results of the spatial regression analysis with those

Searching for bridges between psychopathology and real-world functioning in first-episode psychosis: A network analysis from the OPTiMiSE trial.

BACKGROUND: Network analysis has been used to explore the interplay between psychopathology and functioning in psychosis, but no study has used dedicated statistical techniques to focus on the bridge symptoms connecting these domains. The current study aims to estimate the network of depressive, negative, and positive symptoms, general psychopathology, and real-world functioning in people with first-episode schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorder, focusing on bridge nodes. METHODS: Baseline data from the OPTiMiSE trial were analyzed. The sample included 446 participants (age 40.0 ± 10.9 ye

How "community" matters for how people interact with information: mixed methods study of young men who have sex with other men.

BACKGROUND: We lack a systematic portrait of the relationship between community involvement and how people interact with information. Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) are a population for which these relationships are especially salient: their gay community involvement varies and their information technology use is high. YMSM under age 24 are also one of the US populations with the highest risk of HIV/AIDS. OBJECTIVE: To develop, test, and refine a model of gay community involvement (GCI) factors in human-information interaction (HII) as applied to HIV/AIDS information among YMSM, speci

Exposure to and experience of self-harm and self-harm related content: An exploratory network analysis.

Exposure to the self-harm behaviour of others plays a role in individuals' own self-harm thoughts and behaviours, but there has been little consideration of the broader range of mediums through which exposure to self-harm related content may occur. N = 477 participants completed an online study, including questions regarding lifetime history of self-harm thoughts and behaviours and the frequency with which they had been exposed to self-harm via various mediums. Gaussian Markov random field network models were estimated using graphical LASSO and extended Bayesian information criterion. Bootstra

Sales-Training-Inspired Optimization for Deep High-Order Principal Network in Autism Spectrum Disorder Classification.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social communication deficits and repetitive behaviours. Diagnosing ASD early is difficult for healthcare professionals due to its diverse and intricate presentation. However, early detection is vital for enhancing outcomes and enabling the children to access targeted therapies that support the development of social and communication skills. Moreover, Classical models were time-consuming and resource-intensive, and they required lengthy assessments and specialized training. To bridge these complications, this rese
