[Trauma of the bones of the hand and wrist].

Fractures of the distal radius are common counting for 17 percent of all fractures. With conventional radiography they can be classified readily. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a suitable technique for the detection of occult forms of fractures and of associated soft tissue injuries. In the wrist, fractures are 10 times less common than in the distal radius, with the scaphoid bone to be involved most commonly. Indications for computed tomography (CT) are complex fractures, occult fractures, or dislocations. MRI should be performed to evaluate the soft tissues, to detect occult fractures,

[Clinical significance of nuclear magnetic resonance tomography in urology. Initial experiences].

NMR tomography, which is based on nuclear magnetic resonance, enables the production of sectional images of the human body without ionising radiation. In particular, the field of urology places great hopes on this new procedures, since the contrast in soft tissue is considerably better than that of computer tomography. Our first clinical results confirm the advantages of the soft tissue differentiation as well as the possibility to judge the large vessels safely and simultaneously without contrast medium, which is advantageous in the detection of tumours in the retroperitoneum and in the regio

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging of Arnold-Chiari type I malformation with hydromyelia.

Saturation recovery nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) images and metrizamide computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained in an adult patient with a clinical history suggestive of syringomyelia. Both NMR and CT studies showed low lying cerebellar tonsils. The CT study demonstrated central cavitation of the spinal cord from the midthoracic to midcervical levels but could not exclude an intramedullary soft tissue mass at the cervico-medullary junction. The NMR images in transverse, coronal, and sagittal planes demonstrated extension of an enlarged central spinal cord cerebrospinal fluid space to

Calibration of a 3D endoscopic system based on active stereo method for shape measurement of biological tissues and specimen.

For endoscopic medical treatment, measuring the size and shape of the lesion, such as a tumor, is important for the improvement of diagnostic accuracy. We are developing a system to measure the shapes and sizes of living tissue by active stereo method using a normal endoscope on which a micro pattern projector is attached. In order to perform 3D reconstruction, estimating the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the endoscopic camera and the pattern projector is required. Particularly, calibration of the pattern projector is difficult. In this paper, we propose a simultaneous estimation metho

Unusual CT findings in urachus carcinoma with an extensive and atypical pattern of metastasis. A case report.

Carcinoma of the urachus is very rare. Usually it has a typical appearance on computed tomography, with calcifications in a midline supravesical mass, but advanced stages of this neoplasm require malignancy evaluation that is not easy to establish. We report a case of a urachal tumor where CT scan did not properly assess the response to chemotherapy, while it did show an uncommon metastatic localization in the laterocervical soft tissues.

[Centrofacial necrosis secondary to cocaine use].

We report the medical case of a 40-year-old man with a history of years of cocaine abuse. He was admitted to our hospital for a septic process and purulent rhinorrhea. The clinical examination and craniofacial computed tomography revealed severe necrosis of the nasal septum, maxillary sinus, ethmoidal sinus, sphenoidal sinus and soft palate. In our experience, this is unusual, even for longstanding cocaine abusers.

Spinal involvement in alveolar echinococcosis: assessment of two cases.

Two cases of spinal involvement in alveolar echinococcosis are reported. Conventional radiographs showed bone lysis and spondylitis; computed tomographic scans showed detail of local spread to the ribs, other vertebrae, and soft tissues. Differential diagnosis, which includes other infections and hydatidosis, is difficult, and the diagnosis may be suggested by evidence of a primary hepatic focus, geographic propensity to the infection, and laboratory findings.

An Anatomical Study Using Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Rhinoscopy of the Nasal Cavity of Domestic Cat (Felis silvestris catus L.) and Big Cats: Lion (Panthera leo leo L.), Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya L.), and Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus S.).

The objective of this work was to study the normal anatomy of the nasal cavity of the three species of big cats (leopard, lion, and cheetah) compared to the domestic cat through the use of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and rhinoscopy. Computed tomography allowed us to clearly visualize the entire bony and cartilaginous framework that supports the nasal cavity. Magnetic resonance imaging permitted better visualization of the soft tissues of this cavity. On the other hand, rhinoscopy enabled the direct visualization of the mucosa of the vestibule and nasal cavity, which is ver

Immediate implant placement in the esthetic zone with buccal wall defect using the immediate dentoalveolar restoration (IDR) protocol: A clinical report.

Immediate implant placement in the anterior maxilla is indicated for patients with an intact labial plate to achieve esthetics and predictability. This clinical report describes the use of the immediate dentoalveolar restoration (IDR) protocol with a digitally designed tuberosity adjustment guide (TAG) to restore a compromised socket in the esthetic zone. A 47-year-old patient presented with a missing lateral incisor with loss of the labial wall. The tooth had been lost because of trauma. A tuberosity bone graft was shaped using a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufactured (CAD-CAM)

Diagnosis of a large splenic tumor in a dog: computed tomography versus magnetic resonance imaging.

This study demonstrated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography for large-sized splenic hemangiosarcoma. Radiography and ultrasonography revealed the presence of a large-sized soft-tissue mass in the cranial abdomen. Computed tomography showed hypoattenuating mass. The mass was located in contact with liver, spleen and stomach, and the origin of the mass remained ambiguous. The mass was T2-hyperintense and T1-hypointense with mild contrast enhancement. MRI allowed a differentiation between large-sized tumor and neighboring normal structure, and the mass was consequently identi

Magnetic interactions in phenyl-bridged nitroxide diradicals: conformational effects by multireference and broken symmetry DFT approaches.

In the present paper we report the key results of a comprehensive computational study aimed at investigating the dependence of the singlet-triplet energy gap in phenyl-bridged bis-nitroxide diradicals, on the basis set and on soft structural parameters like torsion and pyramidalization. We have compared the BS-DFT technique with the post-Hartree-Fock DDCI2 multireference approach. With this latter method we have also studied the different role that sigma and pi core and virtual orbitals have in the resulting singlet-triplet energy gap.The results obtained represent one step forward in the defi

Minimally invasive computer-assisted total knee arthroplasty through a subvastus approach.

Computer-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has traditionally been performed through an anterior midline incision approximately 16 cm long, using a capsular incision that separates the interval between the rectus femoris and vastus medialis muscles. The incision disrupts the suprapatellar pouch and frequently leads to adhesions and difficulty in fast and complete flexion recovery despite the wide exposure. The minimally invasive surgery subvastus approach with computer-assisted soft tissue balancing using OrthoPilot TKA (B. Braun Aesculap, Tuttlingen, Germany) not only provides optimal ali

[Lumbar reprolapse or scar tissue? An attempt at differentiation via a computer tomographic bicolor mode].

The bicolour mode for computer tomography is explained. It replaces the soft tissue level of the computer tomogram by setting the window level to +55 Hu and its width to 1 Hu. Structures in the spinal canal with attenuation values greater than 56 Hu appear white. The cauda equina has an attenuation value of less than +45 Hu. Disc prolapses, scar tissue and solid tumours (with the exception of lipomas) have attenuation values greater than +55 Hu. The use of the bicolour mode combined with intravenous contrast in patients with post-operative symptoms can often help to differentiate between repro

Prior-guided craniofacial soft-tissue reconstruction from CBCT under acquisition uncertainty via identity-quantized shape priors.

Objective.Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) suffers from low soft-tissue contrast and metal artifacts, yielding noisy and incomplete soft-tissue surface observations that limit craniofacial modeling for surgical planning. This study aims to reconstruct identity-preserving facial soft-tissue surfaces from CBCT-derived sparse surface evidence for clinical decision support.Approach.We propose a prior-guided reconstruction framework that introduces identity quantization as ananatomicalshape prior to regularize an inherently underdetermined inference problem. By embedding residual vector quantiz

Effect of Cocos nucifera oil on tensile strength of two different tissue conditioners at different time intervals.

Tissue conditioners are a short-term soft liner that is frequently used in dentistry to improve the condition of abused denture-bearing tissues, particularly in patients with denture stomatitis. Topical application of antifungal agent has multiple disadvantages which can be negated by incorporation of an herbal agent like Cocos nucifera oil into the tissue conditioner, which can enhance its mechanical properties like tensile strength, while aiding in reduction of C.albicans count in the oral cavity. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the tensile strength of Visco-gel and GC soft liner wi

Soft tissue mesenchymal tumour - a case report with review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Soft tissue mesenchymal tumours are a common occurrence in surgical practice with particular predilection for the extremities. Approximately 1 in 100 soft tissue tumours are found to be sarcomas. The main concern is to exclude any evidence of malignancy. Both imaging studies and a detailed histological analysis is required to ensure that a diagnosis of a high-grade tumour is not missed. PRESENTATION OF CASE: Here we present a 38-year-old previously fit and well gentleman with a slowly growing lump in the upper aspect of his abdomen over the previous year being completely asympto
