Soils contaminated from military operations often contain mixtures of HMX (octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine), RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine), and TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) rather than a single explosive. Differences among explosives in solubility and reactivity make developing a single remediation treatment difficult. The identification of breeding sites of sand flies is of great epidemiological interest. A soil emergence trap for investigating potential sand fly breeding sites is described. The trap was tested in two rural areas in the Mogi Guaçu River Valley where the American cutaneous leishmaniasis is an endemic disease. Seventy-three sand fly individuals of three species, Lutzomyia intermedia s. l., L. whitmani and L. pessoai, were collected on the forest floor and peridomicile.

A cross-sectional study of soil-transmitted helminthiases in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano was carried out over the 6-year period 1992-97. Primary school children from Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand, on endemic area of soil-transmitted helminths, were selected for study. The infected children were divided into two groups and pair-matched according to intensity of infections: group I were given albendazole (400mg) single dose and group II were given mebendazole (100mg) twice daily for 3 days. On the day following treatment, the number of Trichuris eggs in the stool markedly increased and the egg shape was also altered. Rapid (<=1.5-h) detection of anthrax spores in soil suspensions was accomplished by an immunomagnetic electrochemiluminescence method. Strain-dependent detection limits in the range of 10(sup2) to 10(sup5) spores were achieved in buffer. The rank order of sensitivity for the assay in buffer was Sterne > Ames > Vollum 1B. Detection was up to 3 orders of magnitude less sensitive in soil suspensions, and the rank order of sensitivity was altered.

In order to optimize the recovery from soil of Pseudomonas pseudomallei, the cause of melioidosis, 3 selective broths were compared. A mixture of oxantel-pyrantel pamoate was given to 147 primary school children. A single daily dose of 15 mg per kg body weight was administered to cases with Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura infections. The same single daily dose was given for three consecutive days to 10 cases with hookworm infections. The cure rate was 93.7% for ascariasis and the egg reduction rate was 98.2%. A cure rate and an egg reduction rate for trichuriasis was 70.2% and 86.5% respectively. All cases with hookworm infection were cured. Side effects were light and did not cause any anxiety.

Treatment of soil-transmitted nematodes with mebendazole was carried out in 137 children aged 6--15 years in Thailand. There were 100 cases of hookworm infection, 37 of ascariasis, 16 of trichuriasis and 32 of strongyloidiasis. Mebendazole was given at 100 mg twice daily for three consecutive days irrespective of age or weight. A field experiment was conducted to investigate dissipation of glyphosate and its metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in soil and their residual effects on subsequent urdbean crop.
