Assessment of Wiener Process Degradation Models With Application to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Decline.

Degradation models are commonly used in engineering to analyze the deterioration of systems over time. These models offer an alternative to standard longitudinal methods as they explicitly account for within-subject temporal variability through a latent stochastic process, allowing random fluctuations within a patient to be captured. This work investigates Wiener process-based degradation models with linear drift (i.e., slope) while considering a diffusion term to represent within-subject temporal variability, a random-effects term to capture between-subject variability of the slope, and a tim

Development of a Low-Cost Portable Exhaled Breath Ammonia Detector for Supplementary Five-Stage CKD Classification Using Embedded Threshold Logic.

Conventional diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) relies predominantly on invasive blood-based examinations, limiting the scalability of kidney health screening in resource-constrained environments. This study presents embedded engineering framework for non-invasive, breath-based CKD staging framework supported by machine learning and implemented on a low-cost embedded platform. To account for physiological sex differences in baseline creatinine production, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values and breath ammonia concentrations were derived from two independent clinical cohor

Ultra-short echo-time magnetic resonance imaging lung segmentation with under-Annotations and domain shift.

Ultra-short echo-time (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides enhanced visualization of pulmonary structural and functional abnormalities and has shown promise in phenotyping lung disease. Here, we describe the development and evaluation of a lung segmentation approach to facilitate UTE MRI methods for patient-based imaging. The proposed approach employs a k-means algorithm in kernel space for pair-wise feature clustering and imposes image domain continuous regularization, coined as continuous kernel k-means (CKKM). The high-order CKKM algorithm was simplified through upper bound relax

Recent outbreaks of rift valley Fever in East Africa and the middle East.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an important neglected, emerging, mosquito-borne disease with severe negative impact on human and animal health. … tion between rainfall and local environment, i.e., type of soil, livestock, and human determine the space-time clustering of RVF outbreaks. Contact with animals or their products was the most dominant risk factor to transfer the infection to humans. Uncontrolled movement of livestock during an outbreak is responsible for introducing RVF to new areas. For example, the v …

Hepatitis B virus infection in Chinese families in Hong Kong.

Between January 1983 and July 1984, 731 family members of 240 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers were screened for hepatitis B virus markers. The percentage of those who were positive for HBsAg was 28.3 and that for antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen/antibody to hepatitis B core antigen was 43.1. The carrier rate was higher among siblings (53%) and offspring (50.5%) of female carriers, but similar to that of the age-matched general population for spouses (10.8%). Maternal transmission was the most important mode of spread of hepatitis B virus infection within the family. The HBs

Density of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in a low-income Brazilian urban community where dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses co-circulate.

BACKGROUND: Low-income urban communities in the tropics often lack sanitary infrastructure and are overcrowded, favoring Aedes aegypti proliferation and arboviral transmission. However, as Ae. aegypti density is not spatially homogeneous, understanding the role of specific environmental characteristics in determining vector distribution is critical for planning control interventions. The objectives of this study were to identify the main habitat types for Ae. Aegypti, assess their spatial densities to identify major hotspots of arbovirus transmission over time and investigate underlying factor

Automated temporal tracking and segmentation of lymphoma on serial CT examinations.

PURPOSE: It is challenging to reproducibly measure and compare cancer lesions on numerous follow-up studies; the process is time-consuming and error-prone. In this paper, we show a method to automatically and reproducibly identify and segment abnormal lymph nodes in serial computed tomography (CT) exams. METHODS: Our method leverages initial identification of enlarged (abnormal) lymph nodes in the baseline scan. We then identify an approximate region for the node in the follow-up scans using nonrigid image registration. The baseline scan is also used to locate regions of normal, non-nodal tis

Spatial analysis of visceral leishmaniasis in the oases of the plains of Kashi Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China.

BACKGROUND: Kashi Prefecture of Xinjiang is one of the most seriously affected areas with anthroponotic visceral leishmaniasis in China. A better understanding of space distribution features in this area was needed to guide strategies to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis from highly endemic areas. We performed a spatial analysis using the data collected in Bosh Klum Township in Xinjiang China. METHODS: Based on the report of endemic diseases between 1990 and 2005, three villages with a high number of visceral leishmaniasis cases in Bosh Klum Township were selected. We conducted a household sur

Sequencing-Based Genotyping of Pakistani Burkholderia mallei Strains: A Useful Way for Investigating Glanders Outbreaks.

Burkholderia (B.) mallei is a host-adapted equine pathogen that causes glanders, a re-emerging zoonotic disease, which is endemic in Pakistan and other developing countries and seriously impacts the global equine movement. Due to globalization, the geographical restriction of diseases vanishes and the lack of awareness of and experience with eradicated diseases in industrialized countries also promotes the re-introduction of infections in these regions. Owing to the high equine population, the Pakistani province Punjab is a potential hotspot where several glanders outbreaks have been seen over

Impaired local dynamic stability during treadmill walking predicts future falls in patients with multiple sclerosis: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Falling is a significant problem in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the majority of falls occur during dynamic activities. Recently, there have been evidences focusing on falls and local stability of walking based on dynamic system theory in the elderly as well as patients with cerebral concussion. However, in patient with MS, this relationship has not been fully investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate local stability of walking as a risk factor for falling in patients with MS. METHODS: Seventy patients were assessed while walking at their preferred speed

NMR Based Real-Time Analysis of Exometabolites Decodes the Mechanism of Action of Antibacterial Molecules, Nanoparticles, and Materials.

Understanding the mechanism of action of antimicrobial agents is critical for guiding the development of new drugs to overcome antimicrobial resistance. We present a label-free NMR-based approach to characterize the mechanism of action of antibacterial compounds and materials by the analysis of metabolite secretion kinetics. The method (KINEXO, KINetics of EXOmetabolites) is set up using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as representative Gram-negative and Gram-positive model organisms. By monitoring the real-time production of key secreted metabolites (acetate, formate, lactate, etha

Spatiotemporal Toxicity: Emerging Patterns of Industrial Water Pollution in the Coosa River Watershed, USA (2000-2020).

This study investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics of industrial toxic chemical discharges within the Coosa River watershed from 2000 to 2020 using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) dataset and advanced geospatial techniques. Findings reveal a contrasting trend in reported releases: while total on-site emissions to air, water, and land declined over time, reported surface-water discharges exhibited long-term growth and pronounced temporal variability. Nitrate and zinc compounds were among the most frequently reported chemicals released to surface waters

Temporal and spatial distribution of sporotrichosis in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area, Brazil: a comparison between human and animal cases (2013-2020).

Cat-transmitted sporotrichosis is currently hyperendemic in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area, Brazil. Despite the zoonotic context, surveillance is fragmented, with human and animal contagion being assessed separately. This study aimed to describe and compare spatial and temporal patterns of sporotrichosis cases in humans and animals (cats and dogs) reported to the Brazilian Information System for Notificable Diseases in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, from 2013 to 2020. We conducted an ecological study based on the spatial and temporal evolution of sporotrichosis in the area. We com

Characterization and source identification of tetracycline antibiotics in the drinking water sources of the lower Yangtze River.

The occurrence and spatio-temporal patterns of five tetracyclines (TCs) and six of their degradation products were investigated in twenty-eight drinking water sources along the lower Yangtze River (LYR) over dry, normal and flood seasons. Tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and doxytetracycline (DXC) were the dominant antibiotics detected with the highest occurrence. The maximum concentrations of TC, OTC and DXC were found in dry season as 11.16, 18.98, and 56.09 ng/L, respectively, because of the low dilution, low degradation, and high consumption in this season. Cluster analysis indicat

Topography and timing of activity in right inferior frontal cortex and anterior insula for stopping movement.

Stopping incipient action activates both the right inferior frontal cortex (rIFC) and the anterior insula (rAI). Controversy has arisen as to whether these comprise a unitary cortical cluster-the rIFC/rAI-or whether rIFC is the primary stopping locus. To address this, we recorded directly from these structures while taking advantage of the high spatiotemporal resolution of closely spaced stereo-electro-encephalographic (SEEG) electrodes. We studied 12 patients performing a stop-signal task. On each trial they initiated a motor response (Go) and tried to stop to an occasional stop signal. Both

O-RAID: a satellite constellation architecture for ultra-resilient global data backup.

Growing global data volumes and the increasing frequency of climate-related and geopolitical threats highlight the need for ultra-resilient backup infrastructures. This paper proposes a novel Satellite-RAID architecture, named O-RAID, in which clusters of satellites operate as a distributed redundant array of independent disks (RAID), enabling large-scale cold and warm backup storage in Earth's orbit. Unlike previous work on space-based computing or satellite cloud relays, this research presents a formal design for orbital storage redundancy, inter-satellite parity exchange, latency-tolerant R
