Correlation of prefrontal cortical activation with changing vehicle speeds in actual driving: a vector-based functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Traffic accidents occur more frequently during deceleration than during acceleration. However, little is known about the relationship between brain activation and vehicle acceleration because it has been difficult to measure the brain activation of drivers while they drive. In this study, we measured brain activation during actual driving using vector-based functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Subjects decelerated from 100 to 50 km/h (speed reduction task) and accelerated from 50 to 100 km/h (speed increase task) while driving on an expressway, in the daytime and at night. We examined correl

Charge carrier resolved relaxation of the first excitonic state in CdSe quantum dots probed with near-infrared transient absorption spectroscopy.

This manuscript describes a global regression analysis of near-infrared (NIR, 900-1300 nm) transient absorptions (TA) of colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) photoexcited to their first (1S(e)1S(3/2)) excitonic state. Near-IR TA spectroscopy facilitates charge carrier-resolved analysis of excitonic decay of QDs because signals in the NIR are due exclusively to absorptions of photoexcited electrons and holes, as probe energies in this region are not high enough to induce absorptions across the optical bandgap that crowd the visible TA spectra. The response of each observed component of the exciton

Near-infrared frequency-domain optical spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging: a combined approach to studying cerebral maturation in neonatal rabbits.

The neonatal rabbit brain shows prolonged postnatal development both structurally and physiologically. We use noninvasive near-IR frequency-domain optical spectroscopy (NIRS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to follow early developmental changes in cerebral oxygenation and anatomy, respectively. Four groups of animals are measured: NIRS in normals, MRI in normals, and both NIRS and MRI with hypoxia-ischemia (HI) (diffusion MRI staging). NIRS and/or MRI are performed from P3 (postnatal day=P) up to P76. NIRS is performed on awake animals with a frequency-domain tissue photometer. Absolute v

Impaired microcirculation and tissue oxygenation in human cerebral malaria: a single photon emission computed tomography and near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Serial single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and transcranial doppler (TCD) sonography examinations were performed to investigate changes of cerebral perfusion and tissue oxygenation in a patient with complicated cerebral malaria that have been acquired in Nigeria. On admission to the Neurologic Intensive Care Unit in Innsbruck, Austria, SPECT and NIRS revealed focal right hemispheric hypoperfusion and decreased oxygen saturation, respectively, correlating exactly to the patient's right hemispheric localizing signs. In contrast, TCD examinations

Cerebral hypoxia after hyperventilation causes "re-build-up" phenomenon and TIA in childhood moyamoya disease. A near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Near-infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor the sequential changes in the cerebral oxygenation state during and after hyperventilation in two children with moyamoya disease. Hyperventilation induced the build-up phenomenon and a decrease in the concentration of oxy-hemoglobin ([oxy-Hb]) and total hemoglobin ([t-Hb]). The termination of hyperventilation was followed by partial recovery of [oxy-Hb] and [t-Hb]. Subsequently, however, [oxy-Hb] and [t-Hb] decreased again and cytochrome oxidase was reduced. These impairments of the cerebral hemodynamics and oxygen metabolism were closely associat

Cortical excitability and brain function in patients with insomnia: a pilot transcranial magnetic stimulation and functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia significantly impairs well-being, cognitive function, and social functioning, yet subjective psychological assessments often yield equivocal results regarding the extent of this impairment. Neural function may underlie this discrepancy and offer a more precise foundation for guiding treatment. This study therefore employed non-invasive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate cortical excitability and brain activity patterns in patients with short-term insomnia disorder (SID) and chronic insomnia disorder (CID

Neural Mechanism of the Emotional Process During the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music: A Functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy Study.

Music can evoke profound emotions and autobiographical memories. The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM) is a music therapy approach that uses music-evoked imagery to elicit emotions and promote self-exploration. To investigate the neural mechanisms of BMGIM, 22 healthy university students were recruited, of whom 21 were included in the final analysis. Brain activity was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during a Music Only session and a BMGIM session based on a standardized BMGIM music program. Mood changes were assessed using the Profile of Mood States

Cortical hemodynamic responses to acupuncture at Lianquan (CV23) in patients with post-stroke dysphagia: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

INTRODUCTION: Acupuncture at Lianquan (CV23) is an effective intervention for post-stroke dysphagia (PSD); however, the central neural regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) with deqi assessment to compare cortical activation during acupuncture at CV23 between PSD patients and healthy controls, and to examine the correlation between deqi intensity and cortical activation. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 21 PSD patients (PSD group) and 29 healthy controls (HC group) received acupuncture at CV23. fNIRS was used to monitor hemo

The correlation between center of pressure and cerebral cortex activation characteristics in patients with stroke: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Balance impairment is common among patients with hemiplegia after stroke, yet the relationship between standing balance and cerebral cortex activation under eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions remains unclear. This study aims to explore these correlations to guide targeted neural regulation. Thirty-one stroke patients from Huashan Hospital, Fudan University (2021-2022), were assessed for the sway of center of pressure (COP) under the aforementioned conditions. Brain activation coefficient β value was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Pearson's correlation analysis

Correlation Between Prefrontal Functional Connectivity and the Degree of Cognitive Impairment in Alzheimer's Disease: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

BACKGROUND: The development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) can be divided into subjective cognitive decline (SCD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia. Early recognition of pre-AD stages may slow the progression of dementia. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore functional connectivity (FC) changes of the brain prefrontal cortex (PFC) in AD continuum using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and to analyze its correlation with cognitive function. METHODS: All participants underwent 48-channel fNIRS at resting-state. Based on Brodmann partitioning, the PFC was divided into

Frontal asymmetry assessed in infancy using functional near-infrared spectroscopy is associated with emotional and behavioral problems in early childhood.

Frontal asymmetry (FA), the difference in brain activity between the left versus right frontal areas, is thought to reflect approach versus avoidance motivation. This study (2012-2021) used functional near-infrared spectroscopy to investigate if infant (Mage  = 7.63 months; N = 90; n = 48 male; n = 75 White) FA in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex relates to psychopathology in later childhood (Mage  = 62.05 months). Greater right FA to happy faces was associated with increased internalizing (η2  = .09) and externalizing (η2  = .06) problems at age 5 years. Greater right FA to both happy and f

Abdominal near-infrared spectroscopy in a piglet model of gastrointestinal hypoxia produced by graded hypoxia or superior mesenteric artery ligation.

BackgroundAbdominal near-infrared spectroscopy (aNIRS) may detect gastrointestinal hypoxia before necrotizing enterocolitis develops. We sought to validate aNIRS during splanchnic hypoxia and hypoperfusion in neonatal piglets.MethodsAnesthetized piglets underwent systemic hypoxia or 3 h superior mesenteric artery (SMA) ligation with aNIRS monitoring.ResultsDuring progressive hypoxia, gastrointestinal tissue oxyhemoglobin saturation measured by aNIRS decreased linearly with oxyhemoglobin saturation measured directly in the portal vein. Correlation coefficients were 0.94-0.99 in each of 10 pigle

Near-infrared spectroscopy as a predictor of clinical deterioration: a case report of two infants with duct-dependent congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Some infants with congenital heart disease are at risk of in-hospital cardiac arrest. To better foresee cardiac arrest in infants with congenital heart disease, it might be useful to continuously assess end-organ perfusion. Near-infrared spectroscopy is a non-invasive method to continuously assess multisite regional tissue oxygen saturation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report on two infants with duct-dependent congenital heart disease who demonstrated a gradual change in cerebral and/or renal tissue oxygen saturation before cardiopulmonary resuscitation was required. In both cases, othe

Brain activity and the perception of self-agency while viewing a video of hand grasping: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Self-agency is the recognition of one's own movement and plays a vital role in purposeful, voluntary movement. A sense of self-agency can be elicited in individuals who view their own simple finger movements as they are projected onto a screen and aligned with their actual hand position. Here, we examined whether individuals perceived self-agency when they viewed a video of a hand grasping a wooden cylinder and whether the perception of self-agency correlated with simultaneous changes in oxy-hemoglobin in the parietal or the prefrontal cortical areas. All participants reported the perception o

Altered strategy in short-term memory for pictures in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Strategy in short-term memory for serially presented pictures shifts gradually from a non-phonological to a phonological method as memory ability increases during typical childhood development. However, little is known about the development of this strategic change in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). To understand the neural basis of ADHD, we investigated short-term memory strategies using near-infrared spectroscopy. ADHD children aged from 6 to 12 years and age- and sex-matched control children were assessed in this study. Regional activity was monitored in the l
