The Bonebridge implant in older children and adolescents with mixed or conductive hearing loss: Audiological outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: For children with conductive or mixed hearing loss, in whom use of conventional hearing aids is impossible or limited, use of bone conduction devices is recommended. The choice between the available types of devices depends mostly on the degree of hearing loss, age, and anatomical conditions. One device application in children older than 5 years is the Bonebridge implant. The aim of this study is to assess the benefits and safety of this device in children. METHODS: The material was a group of 11 older children and adolescents aged 10-17 years (mean = 14.7, SD = 2.45) with singl

Smoking during pregnancy affects speech-processing ability in newborn infants.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking during pregnancy is known to adversely affect development of the central nervous system in babies of smoking mothers by restricting utero-placental blood flow and the amount of oxygen available to the fetus. Behavioral data associate maternal smoking with lower verbal scores and poorer performance on specific language/auditory tests. OBJECTIVES: In the current study we examined the effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy on newborns' speech processing ability as measured by event-related potentials (ERPs). METHOD: High-density ERPs were recorded within 48 hr

Otoneurologic disturbances caused by solvent pollution.

Subjects exposed to industrial solvents may experience vertigo and nausea. Solvents are usually volatile hydrocarbon compounds, which are important parts of everyday life in a modern society. They may also cause neurastenia, personality changes, and reduced intellectual capacity. The syndrome that may develop was formerly named psycho-organic syndrome (POS), but in modern terminology it is called chronic toxic encephalopathy (CTE). The syndrome develops slowly, and during the first years no pathological findings will be found using various test batteries. Somewhat later, when the syndrome stil

Measuring quality of life in children with speech and language difficulties: a systematic review of existing approaches.

BACKGROUND: Children's and adolescent's speech and language difficulties (SaLD) can affect various domains of quality of life (QoL), and speech and language therapy interventions are critical to improving QoL. Systematically measuring QoL outcomes in this population is highly complex due to factors such as heterogeneity in impairments and differing targets during intervention. However, measurements of QoL are increasingly required by healthcare commissioners and policy-makers to inform resource allocation. AIMS: To review the use of QoL measures in research involving children (age ≤ 18 years)

Emprical factors associated with Brainstem auditory evoked potential monitoring during microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm and its correlation to hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Cranial nerve VIII is at risk during microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS). The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the empirical factors associated with brainstem auditory evoked potential monitoring and its correlation to post operative hearing loss (HL) after MVD for HFS. METHODS: Pre-operative and post-operative audiogram data and BAEP from ninety-four patients who underwent MVD for HFS were analyzed. Pure tone audiometry (PTA) and Speech Discrimination Score (SDS) were performed on all patients before and after surgery. Intraoperative neurophysiolo

Quantitative Assessment of Cerebella Ataxia, through Automated Limb-Coordination tests.

The disabilities affecting the peripheral regions of the body can be often as a result of cerebellar damage. Tremor, poor and inaccurate coordination, and irregular movements associated with gait, balance and speech are some of the manifestations. Conventionally expert opinion determines severity of Cerebellar Ataxia (CA) and the assessment is likely to be inherently subjective. The automated versions of two commonly used tests: Finger to Nose test (FNT) and Heel to Shin Test (HST), are investigated in this paper for evaluating disability and movement deficits due to CA. Limb movements are mea

Effect of acoustic tumor extension into the internal auditory canal on distortion-product otoacoustic emissions.

We studied the effects on distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) of internal auditory canal (IAC) extension of acoustic neuromas (ANs) with the hypothesis that cochlear patterns of DPOAEs would be more commonly observed when the IAC was completely filled with tumor because of direct tumor involvement of either the inner ear or its blood supply. In a retrospective analysis of 86 patients with surgically proven ANs, DPOAEs were classified as having cochlear or noncochlear patterns on the basis of comparisons with the behavioral pure tone thresholds. The results of behavioral audiometr

Children's speech recognition scores: the Speech Intelligibility Index and proficiency factors for age and hearing level.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to predict consonant recognition scores of adults, children, and children with hearing impairment, using the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII). It was hypothesized that an adult-derived transfer function would be insufficient to predict the scores for children, and that transfer functions for normally hearing listeners would be insufficient to predict scores for children with hearing impairment. Proficiency corrections for age and hearing loss were explored. DESIGN: A 21-consonant test of speech recognition was applied across five signal to noise ra

Cochlear Implant Outcomes in Prelingually Deafened Adults with and without Sound Deprivation: Are There Differences in Quality of Life?

BACKGROUND Indications for cochlear implantation (CI) are constantly being updated, and with them, the audiometric results achieved by patients. Patient satisfaction should always be considered, even in patients with lower audiological results. The aim of the present study was to compare quality of life (QoL), self-perceived hearing benefit, and audiometric results between prelingually and postlingually deafened patients, with and without sound deprivation, after CI. MATERIAL AND METHODS The sample included 46 patients with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss: 22 postlingually deafened and 24

Nonword repetition: the relative contributions of phonological short-term memory and phonological representations in children with language and reading impairment.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the relative contributions of phonological short-term memory and phonological representations to nonword repetition (NWR). This was evaluated in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and/or reading impairment (RI); it was also studied from a developmental perspective by comparing 2 groups of typically developing (TD) children who differed in age. METHOD: NWR, digit span, vocabulary, and word and nonword discrimination were tested in 2 groups of TD children: one group matched on chronological age (CA TD group: n = 41, mean age = 7;8 [months;years]),

Increased amygdala activation to emotional auditory stimuli in the blind.

Emotional signals are of pivotal relevance in social interactions. Neuroimaging and lesion studies have established an important role of the amygdala for the processing of these signals. While the human amygdala receives input from all sensory modalities, it is the visual modality that is most important for emotional aspects in social interactions. Consequently, amygdala involvement in visual emotional processing has been unequivocally established, whereas its role in auditory emotional processing is less clear. To investigate amygdala involvement in auditory emotional processing, we used func

Vestibular schwannoma: when to look for it?

OBJECTIVES: (1) To compare audiometric parameters in patients with vestibular schwannoma and in those with asymmetric hearing loss from other causes; and (2) to assess proposed screening criteria by comparing published protocols. METHODS: Audiometric data from 199 vestibular schwannoma patients and 225 non-tumour patients were compared. Eight screening protocols were tested on these 424 patients. RESULTS: Vestibular schwannoma and non-tumour patients with little or no hearing loss in the unaffected ear were inseparable; however, vestibular schwannoma patients with hearing loss in the unaffec

[Age connected hearing disorders (presbyacusis) as a social problem].

The data of World Health Organization anticipate very rapid growth of percentage participation of elderly people in the population on the whole world. In Poland, in the year 2005, the percentage of people in the "post productive" age (women over 60 years, men over 65 years) was 15,32% of population, the expected data in 2020 is about 16%. The problem of this group becomes very essential social question. One of very important vital difficulties of that particular age is the problem with verbal communication, caused by the hearing disorders, very often stated in the older population. The hearing

Long-term hearing results following stapedotomy.

Stapedotomy, or small fenestra stapes surgery, offers several advantages over total stapedectomy, including less postoperative vertigo and better closure of the air-bone gap at higher frequencies. Although early postoperative results are encouraging for the small fenestra technique, few data are available for longer follow-up periods. In this retrospective study, the hearing results of 35 stapedotomy patients, representing 37 operated ears, were analyzed. Each patient had a follow-up period ranging from 5 to 11 years, with audiograms obtained preoperatively, postoperatively, and at the longter

Tone-Burst Auditory Brainstem Response and Cortical Potentials in Diagnosis of Syndromic Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder.

In this study, we report our findings of comprehensive evaluation in a man with syndromic craniofacial features, cognitive impairment, and hearing loss. The patient underwent psychological and genetic testing and screening for 133 genetic mutations associated with hearing loss, as well as extensive audiological evaluation to assess the auditory pathway between the middle ear and the auditory cortex. Psychological testing showed moderate cognitive impairment. Genetic testing did not reveal a genetic mutation for hearing loss. Audiological evaluation revealed mixed hearing loss and signs of audi

The management of pediatric hearing loss caused by auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is a condition in which auditory testing reveals normal otoacoustic emissions, but auditory brainstem testing is abnormal or absent and speech discrimination is poor. This constellation of findings ostensibly suggests that the cochlea is healthy and an abnormality of conduction or processing of sound occurs along the nerve fibers. As more is learned about this condition, it is becoming clear that ANSD describes heterogeneous, distinct clinical entities that must be taken into account when devising treatment modalities.
