The peculiarities of the pronunciation of children aged 7-9 years with minimal hearing impairment (MHI) were studied. In 20 children with MHI and 20 children with normal hearing and speech development, pronunciation, the phonemic skills, articulatory praxis, as potential mechanisms of pronunciation disorders were assessed with a battery of tests. It was found that children with MHI are a heterogeneous group in terms of the state of pronunciation and the mechanisms that cause pronunciation disorders. 30% of children with MHI, mainly with unilateral hearing loss, did not have pronunciation disor

The speech unit segmentation is an important pre-processing step in the analysis of cleft palate speech. In Mandarin, one syllable is composed of two parts: initial and final. In cleft palate speech, the resonance disorders occur at the finals and the voiced initials, while the articulation disorders occur at the unvoiced initials. Thus, the initials and finals are the minimum speech units, which could reflect the characteristics of cleft palate speech disorders. In this work, an automatic initial/final segmentation method is proposed. It is an important preprocessing step in cleft palate spee…

A neurogenic disorder of acquired speech, aphasia not only is a speech disorder but also implies restriction in communicative independence. In line with the WHO's principle of attending to the consequences of disease as well, speech rehabilitation has to deal not only with aphasia in terms of speech disorder (i.e., impairment) but also with aphasia in terms of communicative ability disorder (i.e., disability) as well as with aphasia in terms of psychosocial interference (i.e., handicap). Current speech therapy orientations can be assigned to these three dimensions and the need for these three

INTRODUCTION: Speech and language disorders are common developmental concerns. Identifying language issues in bilingual children presents a significant challenge. In this study, we examined how bilingualism, gender and age predicted the timing and types of diagnoses in a large clinical sample of children referred to speech and language therapy (SLT) services in a Swedish healthcare setting.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of medical record data was undertaken involving 1025 children under the age of 7 referred to public speech and language clinics. Data on age, gender, bilingualism and spee

Due to articulation issues and phoneme variability, speech disorders such as dysarthria pose significant challenges in clinical rehabilitation. Traditional automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems, which are typically trained on normative datasets, often fail to accurately decode dysarthric speech. Recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and deep learning have allowed the integration of multimodal architectures, such as merging auditory, articulatory, and visual information to record complex speech patterns, making it increasingly possible. In this review, we have explored the conver…

Children with speech sound disorders should attend speech and language therapy and should practice the speech exercises regularly to surpass their speech difficulties. Since doing the speech exercises often may be tedious, there is the need to motivate children to practice them. During the COVID-19 pandemic, speech and language pathologists had the need to adapt their procedures to others with less physical contact. Here, we propose two serious games to motivate children with sigmatism on doing the speech exercises, which can be used at home and during face-to-face and online speech therapy se

In the United Kingdom, multidisciplinary teams within the National Health Service (NHS) usually manage children and adolescents with disorders of hyperactivity. These multidisciplinary teams do not routinely include speech and language therapists (SLTs), and therefore speech and language therapy services for children and adolescents with disorders of hyperactivity are limited. Consequently, research and service delivery for children and adolescents with disorders of hyperactivity in the United Kingdom is only starting to emerge. Two case studies are used to show how speech and language therapy

Speech of children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) is sometimes still disordered even after adequate surgical and nonsurgical therapies. Such speech shows complex articulation disorders, which are usually assessed perceptually, consuming time and manpower. Hence, there is a need for an easy to apply and reliable automatic method. To create a reference for an automatic system, speech data of 58 children with CLP were assessed perceptually by experienced speech therapists for characteristic phonetic disorders at the phoneme level. The first part of the article aims to detect such characteristics

Neurocognitive disorders represent a major public health challenge. We report the experience of a diagnostic day hospital that systematically integrates both a clinical pharmacist and a speech-language pathologist in a socioeconomically advantaged area. This retrospective study included patients undergoing their initial assessment at the day hospital. The primary objective was to describe their neurocognitive, pharmaceutical, and speech-language characteristics. As a secondary objective, we investigated differences according to educational level in pharmaceutical and speech-language assessment

BACKGROUND: Speech features are essential components of psychiatric examinations, serving as important markers in the recognition and monitoring of mental illnesses. This study aims to develop a new clinical decision support system based on artificial intelligence, utilizing speech signals to distinguish between bipolar, depressive, anxiety and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 79 patients, who were admitted to the psychiatry clinic between 2020-2021, including 15 with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, 24 with anxiety disorders, 25 with depressive disorders, a

The incidence of speech disorders in children and adolescents of the Ryazan region in 1993-1998 is analyzed. Speech abnormalities became highly prevalent among children in recent years, particularly among preschool children, and hence specialized service for subjects with speech disorders is to be formed, which should pay the priority attention to children. Approaches to creation of logopedic service of a territory are outlined.

IMPORTANCE: Otolaryngologists are asked to evaluate children who a parent, physician, or someone else believes is slow in developing speech. Therefore, an otolaryngologist should be familiar with milestones for normal speech development, the causes of delay in speech development, and the best ways to help assure that children develop the ability to speak in a normal way.
OBJECTIVE: To provide information for otolaryngologists that is helpful in the evaluation and management of children perceived to be delayed in developing speech.

This report investigates associations between prevalence of functional disturbances of the masticatory system and speech disorders. The subjects were 157 children referred for speech therapy to the hospital and a control group all 130 first-graders at two elementary schools, mean age 7 years 6 months. During clinical examinations, signs and symptoms of TMJ dysfunction were recorded by the same dentist. Articulatory speech disorders were diagnosed by the same phoniatrician using the Remes Articulatory Test (Remes, 1975) for the Finnish language. The results showed that in the hospital referral …

BACKGROUND: Publicly available speech corpora facilitate reproducible research by providing open-access data for participants who have consented/assented to data sharing among different research teams. Such corpora can also support clinical education, including perceptual training and training in the use of speech analysis tools.
PURPOSE: In this research note, we introduce the PERCEPT (Perceptual Error Rating for the Clinical Evaluation of Phonetic Targets) corpora, PERCEPT-R (Rhotics) and PERCEPT-GFTA (Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation), which together contain over 36 hr of speech audio

The purpose of this study is to describe the speech characteristics in an English-speaking Ugandan boy of 4.5 years who has a rare paramedian craniofacial cleft (unilateral lip, alveolar, palatal, nasal and maxillary cleft, and associated hypertelorism). Closure of the lip together with the closure of the hard and soft palate (one-stage palatal closure) was performed at the age of 5 months. Objective as well as subjective speech assessment techniques were used. The speech samples were perceptually judged for articulation, intelligibility and nasality. The Nasometer was used for the objective m

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Some families faced difficulties accessing speech therapy in some areas of Malaysia and/or during the COVID-19 lockdown. Therefore, parent-mediated intervention could be one of the ways to solve this issue, as it has been proven to effectively improve communication skills among children with communication disorders. Hence, a Mandarin parental guidebook comprising a series of language stimulation activities was developed to explore the perception of parents of children with communication disorders, ranging from 3 to 6 years old, regarding the feasibility of (1) conduc
