Results of orthodontic procedure in a patient with classic infantile Pompe disease.

BACKGROUND: Pompe Disease is a rare lysosomal storage disorder. Although enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has significantly extended the lifespan and improved motor function in these patients, residual orofacial muscle weakness remains as a considerable burden by affecting speech and swallowing. CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old girl with classic infantile Pompe disease presented with speech and swallowing difficulties. Hypernasality made intelligibility difficult. Orthodontic evaluation revealed mild anterior open bite, atypical swallowing patterns, and maxillary transverse deficiency. Radiogr

Breaking down the ear-brain dichotomy: the effects of age-related hearing loss on the cortical language system.

Older individuals frequently experience hearing difficulties, often due to sensorineural hearing loss (HL) primarily originating in the inner ear. However, it is not uncommon for older adults with HL to also exhibit impairments in speech intelligibility and comprehension, and seemingly paradoxically, similar circumstances are often observed in older adults without observable hearing pathology. In this review article, we address the fallacy of a strict ear-brain dichotomy in the context of HL and provide empirical evidence that a one-sided perspective that posits that speech processing deficits…

A new genetic variant causing auditory neuropathy: A CARE case report.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory neuropathy refers to impaired synchronization of the auditory signal along the cochlear nerve. The present study, following CARE case report guidelines, describes a case of auditory neuropathy secondary to a genetic variant not previously described. OBSERVATION: An 18-year-old patient was followed for multiple learning disorder. His main complaint was speech comprehension, especially in noise. Auditory neuropathy was diagnosed on electrophysiological criteria, linked to a 2.66Mb deletion on the short arm of chromosome 16, at 16p13.11p12.3 (15,492,317-18,162,167, accordi

Is the cochlear implant a successful long-term solution for single-sided deaf and asymmetric hearing-impaired patients?

PURPOSE: We investigated the long-term results of cochlear implant (CI) recipients with asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) or single-sided deafne … ignificantly compared with the unaided preoperative situation. Additionally, CI improved subjective speech intelligibility and spatial hearing impression while reducing tinnitus burden. CONCLUSION: Subjects with AHL and SSD benefit from CI, subjectively and audiologically. Cochlear implant is a successful long-term treatment for AHL and SSD.

Dysarthria as the isolated clinical symptom of borreliosis--a case report.

This report presents a case of dysarthria due to hypoglossal nerve mono-neuropathy as the only consequence of neuroborreliosis. The 65-year-old man with a seven-months history of articulation disturbances was examined. The speech of the patient was slow and laboured. A slight weakness of the muscles of the tongue (left-side) was observed. The patient suffered from meningitis due to Borrelia burgdorferi infection in 1999 and initially underwent a successful antibiotic treatment. Detailed radiological investigation and psychological tests were performed and co-existing neurological diseases were

Using Objective Metrics to Measure Hearing Aid Performance.

OBJECTIVES: The performance of hearing aids is generally characterized by a small set of standardized measurements. The primary goals of these procedures are to measure basic aspects of the hearing aid performance and to ascertain that the device is operating properly. A more general need exists for objective metrics that can predict hearing aid outcomes. Such metrics must consider the interaction of all the signal processing operating in the hearing aid and must do so while also accounting for the hearing loss for which the hearing aid has been prescribed. This article represents a first step

The effect of presentation level on memory performance.

OBJECTIVES: A loss of speech intelligibility at high presentation levels is called rollover. It is a phenomenon that increases in prevalence as people age. Whether the adverse effect of high presentation levels extends to processes subsequent to speech intelligibility, such as memory, is unknown. The present study examined this question on the basis of the previous finding that older but not younger adults showed memory impairment when acoustically distorted words were presented at 50 dB SL compared with an undistorted baseline presented at 65 dB SPL. One question investigated in the present s…

Face viewing behavior predicts multisensory gain during speech perception.

Visual information from the face of an interlocutor complements auditory information from their voice, enhancing intelligibility. However, there are large individual differences in the ability to comprehend noisy audiovisual speech. Another axis of individual variability is the extent to which humans fixate the mouth or the eyes of a viewed face. We speculated that across a lifetime of face viewing, individuals who prefer to fixate the mouth of a viewed face might accumulate stronger associations between visual and auditory speech, resulting in improved comprehension of noisy audiovisual speec

Application of spectral subtraction method on enhancement of electrolarynx speech.

Although electrolarynx (EL) serves as an important method of phonation for the laryngectomees, the resulting speech is of poor intelligibility due to the presence of a steady background noise caused by the instrument, even worse in the case of additive noise. This paper investigates the problem of EL speech enhancement by taking into account the frequency-domain masking properties of the human auditory system. One approach is incorporating an auditory masking threshold (AMT) for parametric adaptation in a subtractive-type enhancement process. The other is the supplementary AMT (SAMT) algorithm

Retraining speech production and fluency in non-fluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia.

The non-fluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) presents with a gradual decline in grammar and motor speech resulting from selective degeneration of speech-language regions in the brain. There has been considerable progress in identifying treatment approaches to remediate language deficits in other primary progressive aphasia variants; however, interventions for the core deficits in nfvPPA have yet to be systematically investigated. Further, the neural mechanisms that support behavioural restitution in the context of neurodegeneration are not well understood. We exami
