The physiological consequences of crib-biting in horses in response to an ACTH challenge test.

Stereotypies are repetitive and relatively invariant patterns of behavior, which are observed in a wide range of species in captivity. Stereotypic behavior occurs when environmental demands produce a physiological response that, if sustained for an extended period, exceeds the natural physiological regulatory capacity of the organism, particularly in situations that include unpredictability and uncontrollability. One hypothesis is that stereotypic behavior functions to cope with stressful environments, but the existing evidence is contradictory. To address the coping hypothesis of stereotypies

Internalization of weight bias: Implications for binge eating and emotional well-being.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between internalization of negative weight-based stereotypes and indices of eating behaviors and emotional well-being in a sample of overweight and obese women. RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURES: The sample was comprised of 1013 women who belonged to a national, non-profit weight loss organization. Participants completed an on-line battery of self-report questionnaires measuring frequency of weight stigmatization and coping responses to deal with bias and symptoms of depression and self-esteem, attitudes about weight and obesity, and binge eating b

Functional reactivity of the dopaminergic system following acute and chronic ketamine treatments.

This study examined the effects of acute (15 mg/kg, i.p.) and chronic subanesthetic (15 mg/kg, i.p., t.i.d, for 6 days) doses of ketamine [a noncompetitive N-methyl-D: -aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist] on amphetamine (presynaptic dopamine releasing agent; 10 mg/kg, i.p.) and apomorphine (a D(2) receptor agonist; 1 mg/kg, i.p.)-induced stereotyped behaviors. The effect of acute and chronic ketamine on haloperidol (a D(2) receptor antagonist; 1.6 mg/kg, i.p.)-induced catalepsy was also examined. Acute ketamine and chronic ketamine pretreatment increased amphetamine-induced stereotyped sniff

Whistle sequences in wild killer whales (Orcinus orca).

Combining different stereotyped vocal signals into specific sequences increases the range of information that can be transferred between individuals. The temporal emission pattern and the behavioral context of vocal sequences have been described in detail for a variety of birds and mammals. Yet, in cetaceans, the study of vocal sequences is just in its infancy. Here, we provide a detailed analysis of sequences of stereotyped whistles in killer whales off Vancouver Island, British Columbia. A total of 1140 whistle transitions in 192 whistle sequences recorded from resident killer whales were an

Pharmacologic control of pemoline induced self-injurious behavior in rats.

Administration of oral Pemoline produces long lasting amphetamine-type stereotyped behavior and persistent self-biting behavior in rats. The effects of haloperidol, pimozide, diazepam, and serotonin depletion by pretreatment with p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) or chronic pretreatment with p-chloroamphetamine (PCA) on abnormal behavior produced by pemoline were studied. Diazepam consistently increased the duration of stereotyped behavior. It also reduced licking/biting and self-biting but the latter effects were not consistent. Pretreatment with PCA had negligible effects on stereotyped behavior.

Genetic mapping of fixed phenotypes: disease frequency as a breed characteristic.

Traits that have been stringently selected to conform to specific criteria in a closed population are phenotypic stereotypes. In dogs, Canis familiaris, such stereotypes have been produced by breeding for conformation, performance (behaviors), etc. We measured phenotypes on a representative sample to establish breed stereotypes. DNA samples from 147 dog breeds were used to characterize single nucleotide polymorphism allele frequencies for association mapping of breed stereotypes. We identified significant size loci (quantitative trait loci [QTLs]), implicating candidate genes appropriate to re

Spatiotemporal remodeling of extracellular matrix orients epithelial sheet folding.

Biological systems are inherently noisy; however, they produce highly stereotyped tissue morphology. Drosophila pupal wings show a highly stereotypic folding through uniform expansion and subsequent buckling of wing epithelium within a surrounding cuticle sac. The folding pattern produced by buckling is generally stochastic; it is thus unclear how buckling leads to stereotypic tissue folding of the wings. We found that the extracellular matrix (ECM) protein, Dumpy, guides the position and direction of buckling-induced folds. Dumpy anchors the wing epithelium to the overlying cuticle at specifi

Collective self and individual choice: the effects of inter-group comparative context on environmental values and behaviour.

Self-categorization theory suggests that inter-group comparisons inform individual behaviour by affecting perceived in-group stereotypes that are internalized by group members. The present paper provides evidence for this chain of effects in the domain of environmental behaviour. In two studies, inter-group comparative context was manipulated. Study 1 found that the perceived in-group stereotype, self-stereotype (as represented by the reported value centrality), and behavioural intentions shifted away from a comparison out-group (irrespective of whether this was an upward or downward compariso

Multi-region investigation of 'man' as default in attitudes.

Previous research has studied the extent to which men are the default members of social groups in terms of memory, categorization, and stereotyping, but not attitudes which is critical because of attitudes' relationship to behavior. Results from our survey (N > 5000) collected via a globally distributed laboratory network in over 40 regions demonstrated that attitudes toward Black people and politicians had a stronger relationship with attitudes toward the men rather than the women of the group. However, attitudes toward White people had a stronger relationship with attitudes toward White wome…

Attitudes towards Tourette syndrome and schizophrenia amongst psychology students.

INTRODUCTION: Both people with schizophrenia (SCZ) and Tourette syndrome (TS) have been found to be commonly stigmatized, but stereotypes held for both have never been directly compared. Clinicians and students of healthcare professions have been shown to also be affected by stereotypical beliefs. Media portrayals frequently perpetuate stereotypes, while accurate depictions could raise awareness and reduce stigma. METHODS: The aim of this study was to compare stereotypes regarding SCZ and TS and their associations with social media consumption. We conducted an online survey amongst psychology

Attractiveness, diagnostic ambiguity, and disability cues impact perceptions of women with pain.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: This experimental study investigated how physical attractiveness, disability cue, and diagnostic ambiguity stereotypes impact perceptions of a patient's pain/disability and personality. RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN: After viewing photographs of women pictured with or without a cane, accompanied by descriptions of the women's diagnosis (fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis), 147 university students rated the women's pain/disability and personality. RESULTS: Analyses revealed that more attractive women received lower ratings on pain/disability and higher ratings (more positive) on

Clonic perseveration in the subacute stage of Japanese encephalitis.

We report a very rare case of Japanese encephalitis (JE) presenting with reversible stereotyped movement in the subacute stage. A 58-year-old woman presented with high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and consciousness disturbance. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and T2-weighted image (WI) showed high intensity areas in the bilateral thalamus, caudate nucleus and hippocampus. She developed coma, convulsion, and ballism in the acute stage. One month after onset, she showed rhythmic, stereotyped, repetitive movements with hypoperfusion in

A Child is Being Caged: Resignation Syndrome and the Psychopolitics of Petrification.

Uppgivenhetssyndrom, or resignation syndrome (RS), is a disorder that until recently was thought to affect the children of refugees in Sweden alone. The heuristic of psychopolitics is used to theorize RS as a form of abjection (Bataille, Kristeva) and petrification (Fanon, Marriott), and the movement from petrification to petrification in hallucinosis (Fanon, Bion) is delineated: first these children are petrified by persecutory and culturally specific stereotypes that precede and exceed them symbolically, and then, through a succession of shocks, they enter a post-traumatic stupor in which th

The stigma of making a living from garbage: Meta-sterotypes of trash-pickers in León (Nicaragua).

The article analyzes various aspects related to the meta-stereotype of 99 trash pickers who made their living from the garbage dumps in León (Nicaragua). This group is difficult to access, heavily stigmatized, and lives in extreme poverty. All the pickers in the city were interviewed using a heteroapplied structured interview. The results show that people who obtained their livelihood from garbage in the city of León had a mainly negative meta-stereotype, albeit one to which was some extent indulgent, which could have a negative impact on their processes of social inclusion. Prevention of stereotypy in laboratory mice: effects on stress physiology and behaviour.

According to the coping hypothesis, the adaptive significance of stereotypies in barren housing conditions may lie in their potency to attenuate the deleterious consequences of chronic stress. Present evidence from experimental studies is ambiguous. When Zur:ICR mice were selectively prevented from stereotypic wire gnawing at the cage lid, the previous amount of stereotyped behaviour after a short-term decrease in activity was compensated by variable active behaviour on the cage floor. This change in behaviour was associated with a short-term elevation of serum corticosterone concentrations 24
