Diaphragmatic eventration complicated by gastric volvulus with perforation.

Eventration of the diaphragm with gastric volvulus is uncommon. Gastric perforation in these cases is rare and usually associated with acute gastric volvulus with strangulation. We describe a case of diaphragmatic eventration with chronic gastric volvulus with gastric perforation without strangulation in an elderly man.

Predisposing factors for developing gastric volvulus and the role of imaging.

Two cases of gastric volvulus are presented to highlight the predisposing factors, mechanism and different types of volvulus, and the role of imaging in making the diagnosis. Eventration of the diaphragm and hiatus hernia are precipitating factors for developing organo-axial and mesentero-axial volvulus. Imaging is key to making the diagnosis and distinguishing the types of volvulus in order to decide on management.

Rare association of eventration of left hemidiaphragm with ipsilateral thyroid agenesis.

Eventration is a well-known congenital malformation of the diaphragm, usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally on chest radiography. It is sometimes associated with a number of other congenital syndromes and anomalies. We report a rare case of eventration of left hemidiaphragm associated with gastric volvulus, ipsilateral thyroid agenesis and microphthalmia.

Gastric volvulus manifesting as infantile wheezing: a puzzling presentation.

Gastric volvulus is a rare disease in the pediatric population. Its clinical presentation is exceedingly variable, and without a high index of suspicion, delayed or missed diagnosis is not uncommon as illustrated by this report of a 13-month-old boy with a puzzling presentation of chronic wheezing and cough for 1 year. There were no gastrointestinal symptoms. The symptoms were attributed to bronchiolitis, pneumonia, laryngomalacia, or reactive airway disease by several practicing physicians. A detailed history revealed that the wheezing got worse after large meals. This information prompted an

An unusual cause of postoperative gastric volvulus.

BACKGROUND: Gastric volvulus presents with nonspecific abdominal symptoms and therefore may be missed. Its diagnosis has increased with improving imaging techniques such as computed tomography scan with contrast. Volvulus around a surgical drain has not been previously reported. OUR CASE: We report the case of a 44-year-old lady who suffered with symptoms of persistent postprandial nausea and vomiting after distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen demonstrated a surgical drain slinging up the pylorus and a partial gastric volvulus. The symptoms resolved

Intraabdominal counter clockwise gastric volvulus incarcerated through a defect of the lesser omentum: CT diagnosis.

We report the probably first case of incarcerated intra-abdominal gastric volvulus protruding through a defect of the pars flaccida of the lesser omentum. The 79-year-old woman presented with acute symptoms of upper gastrointestinal occlusion. Plain film radiographs, endoscopy and attempts at opacifying the upper alimentary tract failed to make the correct diagnosis. The definite preoperative diagnosis was achieved by mdCT thanks to high quality multiplanar reconstruction (MPR). In the reported case coronal oblique MPR views and vascular volume rendering views (VR) were of particular interest

[Gastric volvulus--complication of a large paraesophageal hiatal hernia].

The authors present the case of a patient with a large paraesophageal hiatal hernia complicated with organo-axial gastric volvulus. We discuss problems of diagnosis and therapeutical options.

Acute gastric volvulus related to adhesions after laparoscopic fundoplication.

Laparoscopic antireflux procedures currently are considered to be as safe, cost efficient, and effective as the techniques used previously in antireflux surgery, although life-threatening complications after antireflux surgery have been reported with both open and laparoscopic fundoplication. We report the case of a 38-year-old man who presented with acute abdominal pain and vomiting 8 months after a laparoscopic Nissen-Rosetti fundoplication. The diagnosis of gastric volvulus was suspected. The endoscopic examination showed a proper location of the fundoplication and features consistent with

Laparoscopic reduction of an acute gastric volvulus and repair of a hernia of Bochdalek.

We report a case of an acute strangulated gastric volvulus in a hernia of Bochdalek in an adult female patient that was repaired successfully via the laparoscopic approach. A left-sided diaphragmatic hernia contained a strangulated but viable gastric volvulus and a noncompromised colon. The contents of the hernia were reduced, and the 4-cm congenital diaphragmatic defect was primarily repaired with nonabsorbable sutures. The patient was discharged on the second postoperative day and remained symptom-free at 7 months. Unlike the very few previous reports of elective laparoscopic repair of uncom

[Neonatal pyloric obstruction. Diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. Apropos of 5 cases].

Five cases pyloric obstruction, revelated at the birth-period were summarized from 1964 to 1987; 1 pyloro-duodenal atresia, two cases of total pyloric obstruction by diaphragm, two cases of pyloric obstruction associated with several ileal and/or-colic atresia in the same family, and suspected at the antenatal echographic study. The treatment was either pyloro-duodenal anastomosis (1 case) or diaphragmatic resection with pyloroplasty (4 cases). In immediate results are obtained one immediate death, at the third day, and 4 initial good results; but two deaths came in a further period at 3 month

Acute pancreatitis and gastric volvulus occurring in a congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Many complications are known to occur in association with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Acute pancreatitis in this situation is very rare. A case is reported and guidelines are given for the management of this complication.

Gastric emptying of a radionuclide-labeled test meal after surgical correction of gastric dilatation-volvulus in dogs.

Gastric emptying of a radionuclide-labeled test meal was studied in 10 dogs that had been treated surgically for gastric dilatation-volvulus and in 10 clinically normal (control) dogs. There were no significant differences between the gastric emptying rates and patterns in treated and in control dogs. Thus, there are no indications that gastric emptying is delayed in dogs that have recovered from gastric dilatation-volvulus, and there is no reason for pyloric surgery in dogs with this condition.

Chronic gastric torsion in infancy: a revisited diagnosis.

Twenty out of 108 infants with vomiting, who underwent an upper gastrointestinal X-ray study during a period of 2 years, showed a peculiar shape and position of the stomach already described as chronic gastric torsion. We examined clinical, radiologic and laboratory findings of these 20 infants. Our results showed that chronic gastric torsion is frequently associated with gastroesophageal reflux and has a wide spectrum of symptoms, complications and nutritional abnormalities.

Severe Gastric Mucosal Necrosis Due to Giant Paraesophageal Hernia.

Hiatal hernias occur when part of the intra-abdominal contents protrude into the chest cavity. Paraesophageal hernia (PEH) is a type of hiatal hernia that is chronic and usually asymptomatic. Although patients may not present with alarming symptoms, the complications of PEH may be severe if left untreated. Hiatal hernias can be further categorized based on the degree of herniation. The most common subtype is a type I hiatal hernia, which occurs when the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) herniates into the chest cavity. Type II, III, and IV PEH are when the GEJ, a portion of the stomach, and abdo
