Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Streptococcus spp. isolated from tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) cultured in river-based cage and earthen ponds in Northern Thailand.

Streptococcus spp. are major pathogenic bacteria associated with massive mortality in tilapia. This study investigated the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) and Streptococcus iniae (S. iniae) isolated from tilapia in river-based floating cage and earthen pond farms in northern Thailand. Isolates were identified by biochemical and molecular analyses. Capsular typing, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus polymerase chain reaction and multilocus sequence typing were performed to investigate the genetic relatedness. Six and one isolates were con…

Population genomics of Group B Streptococcus reveals the genetics of neonatal disease onset and meningeal invasion.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS), or Streptococcus agalactiae, is a pathogen that causes preterm births, stillbirths, and acute invasive neonatal disease burden and mortality. Here, we investigate bacterial genetic signatures associated with disease onset time and meningeal tissue infection in acute invasive neonatal GBS disease. We carry out a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 1,338 GBS isolates from newborns with acute invasive disease; the isolates had been collected annually, for 30 years, through a national bacterial surveillance program in the Netherlands. After controlling for the popu…

Of the Phrensy: an update on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis in the pediatric population.

In the past century, advances in antibiotics and vaccination have dramatically altered the incidence and clinical outcomes of bacterial meningitis. We review the shifting epidemiology of meningitis in children, including after the implementation of vaccines that target common meningitic pathogens and the introduction of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis offered to mothers colonized with Streptococcus agalactiae. We also discuss what is currently known about the pathogenesis of meningitis. Recent studies of the human microbiome have illustrated dynamic relationships of bacterial and viral popu…

Early Onset Sepsis.

Early onset sepsis (EOS) is a blood stream infection that occurs, by varying definitions, during a neonate's first 3 or 7 days of life. In the United States, Streptococcus agalactiae and Escherichia coli are the most common pathogens associated with EOS. Worldwide, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, and Staphylococcus aureus are also common etiologies. Early recognition of risk factors and clinical concerns for EOS facilitates timely treatment. Current research is focusing on ways to reduce unnecessary treatment of infants with risk factors for EOS without true infection, while still appropriately det…

Mechanisms and Manifestations of Group B Streptococcus Meningitis in Newborns.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS; Streptococcus agalactiae) is a gram-positive colonizer of the healthy intestinal and genitourinary microbiota. During and shortly after birth, neonates and infants can be opportunistically infected leading to sepsis, pneumonia, or meningitis among other illnesses. GBS is the leading cause of neonatal meningitis globally, and while prophylactic treatments have been successful for reducing early-onset disease, no decrease in the incidence of late-onset disease has occurred and no vaccine is currently available. In this review, we describe GBS both from a clinical and …

Streptococcus mutans in the oral cavity as a risk factor for threatened miscarriage.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the bacterial colonization of the oral and vaginal ecosystem in pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed 162 pregnant women, (99 women with threatened abortion and 63 women with healthy pregnancies). We collected oral and vaginal swabs, using PCR analysis to assess the presence of various bacteria (S. mutans, E. faecalis, E. coli, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Prevotella intermedia, Gardnerella vaginalis, S. agalactiae). RESULTS: Results showed that the presence of Streptococcus mutans in the o

The prevention of neonatal group B streptococcal disease: a report by a working group of the Medical Screening Society.

Streptococcus agalactiae, or Lancefield group B streptococcus (GBS), is the most frequent cause of serious bacterial sepsis, including neonatal meningitis, in UK neonates. Early-onset neonatal GBS infection, but not late-onset, can be prevented by screening to identify high-risk pregnancies and administering penicillin during delivery. A vaccine has been developed as an alternative means of prevention but it is awaiting a randomized trial before being available for general use. In this review we examine the published literature to assess the morbidity and mortality attributable to neonatal GBS…

[Evaluation of three selective enrichment media for detection of Group B Streptococcus in vaginal swabs].

As the most common cause of neonatal sepsis, Lancefield Group B Streptococcus (GBS) must be diagnosed as early as possible in pregnant women is prevent neonatal infection. A selective enrichment broth medium has been widely recommended to optimally recover GBS from genital and anorectal samples. To establish a culture suitable for screening vaginal swab specimens, we compared subcultures of three selective enrichment media to direct culture on agar medium. Vaginal swab samples were inoculated directly onto 5% sheep blood agar and into New Granada medium (Eiken), Lim broth (Becton, Dickinson, a

Selenium nanoparticles coated with polysaccharide-protein complexes from abalone viscera improve growth and enhance resistance to diseases and hypoxic stress in juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

The use of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) in aquaculture has been increasing gradually over the past few years. SeNPs enhance immunity, are highly effective against pathogens, and have low toxicity. In this study, SeNPs were prepared using polysaccharide-protein complexes (PSP) from abalone viscera. The acute toxicity of PSP-SeNPs to juvenile Nile tilapia and their effect on growth performance, intestinal tissue structure, antioxidation capacity, hypoxic stress, and Streptococcus agalactiae infection were investigated. The results showed that the spherical PSP-SeNPs were stable and safe, with …
