There is a paucity of research on pharmacotherapies in adolescents with substance use disorders. This paucity is partly because of the fact that most people with substance dependence do not get diagnosed until early adulthood, that is, after 18 years of age. This article reviews pharmacotherapies used for aversion, substitution, anti-craving, and detoxification of alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, and opioids dependence. Adult research is referenced when applicable and generalized to adolescents with caution. Continued evaluation and development of pharmacotherapy for youth in controlled studies are

Alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug dependence represents a serious health and social issue within the community. As drug dependence has become more widely recognized as a clinical disorder and the severity of the problem been fully realized, options available for treatment have grown along with our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the development and persistence of addiction. Treatment has progressed from purely social and behavioral approaches to now encompass pharmacotherapy to attempt to disrupt the mechanisms underlying these disorders. Despite these advances, many

PURPOSE: The use of quetiapine as a drug to treat various substance use disorders as well as a drug of abuse is examined.
SUMMARY: Quetiapine's effectiveness in treating schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is well-known; however, growing evidence has indicated that it may be useful in the treatment of various substance use disorders. Small-scale studies have been conducted to investigate the potential benefit of quetiapine in patients dependent on alcohol, cocaine, and amphetamines. The results of these two studies provide some evidence that quetiapine may benefit patients diagnosed with a men

This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate a newly developed cumulative measure for substance use problems as predictor of criminal recidivism in youth. Questionnaires-based substance-related behaviors (tobacco, alcohol, cannabis and further drugs), and interview-based psychiatric disorders were assessed in a sample of 142 male adolescent forensic outpatients in Zurich, Switzerland (mean age 16.8 years, SD = 1.4 years). Cox regressions were used to test whether substance use behaviors/disorders were predictors of officially recorded criminal offenses 365 days after the initial assessment. The c

BACKGROUND: Population-based screenings for substance use are highly recommended, but little is known about the screening status of substances in primary care settings (PCSs). This systematic review aims to understand what screening tools are used, the barriers that impact screenings, and the opportunities to improve screenings.
METHODS: Articles focusing on the utilization of screening tools for substance use disorders (SUDs) within PCSs were considered for inclusion. Searches on PubMed and Embase databases were conducted from April 25, 2022, to July 22, 2022, which yielded 487 results; only

Ketamine, a substance used for anesthesia and known for inducing dissociation, can lead to addiction and the development of severe withdrawal symptoms. Ketamine alters brain networks before affecting somesthetic sensation. Ketamine abuse was especially prevalent in East and Southeast Asia, and its popularity has continued to expand globally in recent decades. Ketamine is gaining popularity in the public and private sectors as a cheaper off-label depression treatment. Unfortunately, ketamine may cause side effects, such as heart and blood vessel instability, respiratory depression, liver injury

More than 500 centres in China hold over 300,000 individuals in what has been described by the United Nations as unethical and ineffective compulsory treatment and rehabilitation centres. Individuals in these centres face widespread human rights abuses, including lack of due process, forced labour, physical and sexual violence, and denial of healthcare. Because of the vulnerability of individuals in detention settings to abuse in research trials, ethical guidelines have required research to pose no more than minimal risk, to address the process of incarceration, and the health or well-being of

INTRODUCTION: Since 2008, Italian legislators, with the aim of ensuring public safety, have made it mandatory for an occupational doctor (OD) to assess specific categories of workers to exclude those who may have consumed drugs of abuse. Due to the relevance of work activities relating to the civil aviation and airport sector, a policy based on the use of training and information tools, as well as a health surveillance protocol, has been undertaken since 2009.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 61,008 workers at a commercial airline underwent health surveillance between 2009 and 2019. Followin

Addiction remains a major public health concern, and while pharmacotherapies can be effective, clinicians are limited by the paucity of existing interventions. Endocannabinoid signaling is involved in reward and addiction, which raises the possibility that drugs targeting this system could be used to treat substance use disorders. This review discusses findings from randomized controlled trials evaluating cannabinergic medications for addiction. Current evidence suggests that pharmacotherapies containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, such as dronabinol and nabiximols, are effective for cannabi

The dramatic increase in the use and abuse of prescription controlled substances, cannabis, and a rapidly evolving array of legal and illegal psychotropic drugs has led to a growing concern by employers about workplace impairment, incidents, and accidents. The Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs, which serve as a template for most private sector programs, focus on a small group of illicit drugs, but disregard the wider spectrum of legal and illegal psychotropic drugs and prescription controlled substances. We propose a protocol for the evaluation of workplace impairment, based on comprehen

The main aim of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of drug treatment programs in reducing criminal behavior. The research is based on a systematic review and meta-analysis of evaluations of drug treatment programs. The research investigated various drug treatment programs including methadone treatment, therapeutic communities, post-release supervision for drug-misusing offenders, and drug courts, and focused on drug treatment programs that were primarily concerned with heroin, crack and cocaine misuse. The main outcome variable analyzed was reoffending following treatment as measured by

The primary care physician is in a good position to diagnose, manage and intervene with patients who are undergoing the process of treatment and recovery from alcohol and drug disorders. Medications such as benzodiazepines are effective in the treatment of withdrawal syndromes, and naltrexone and disulfiram can be used to augment relapse prevention. Patients may also participate in psychosocial methods of addiction treatment that can reduce the risk of relapse and improve their psychosocial, health, legal and employment status.

The treatment of cocaine abuse among pregnant women involves attention not only to the cocaine use, but also to the pregnancy and constellation of medical and social problems substance-abusing women experience. Writing about the needs of women who enter treatment for drug-dependence treatment, Reed has offered suggestions for women-oriented treatment services. Women-oriented services are those that "(1) address women's treatment needs; (2) reduce barriers to recovery, which are more likely to occur for women; (3) are delivered in a context that is compatible with women's styles and is safe fro

Cardiovascular complications are among the most common and dangerous complications of cocaine abuse, ranging from episodic arrhythmias to myocardial infarction, strokes, cardiomyopathy, and sudden death. The central nervous system-mediated action of cocaine triggers an increase in circulating catecholamines, resulting in arterial vasoconstriction, increase in myocardial oxygen demand, myocardial ischemia, tachycardia, and other arrhythmias. The peripheral cardiovascular action of cocaine involves the inhibition of reuptake of catecholamines at adrenergic nerve terminals, with local release of

Headache induced by ergotamine-abuse was described 40 years ago. More recently there is ample evidence suggesting that chronic headache may also be provoked by analgesic abuse. A recent Classification of the International Headache Society has defined this kind of headache as an autonomous disease. It consists in a daily chronic headache with paroxysmal attacks associated with daily or almost daily assumption of analgesics and/or ergotamine. It is debated whether the term "abuse" or "dependence" is correct. Almost 5% of patients of the Headache Centres in Italy were found to be drug abusers. Mo

Dependence is a recognized problem in a significant number of patients taking therapeutic doses of benzodiazepines. A characteristic withdrawal syndrome has been described. These patients are best managed as outpatients with gradual dosage reduction over 4-12 weeks. Pharmacological adjuncts such as propranolol and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics are useful for certain specific symptoms, but so far no single substance has proved useful in attenuating the majority of symptoms. Psychological and social support should be maximized, but here again no single technique has been shown to be more than mod
