INTRODUCTION: Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by nail dysplasia, hypoplastic or absent patellae, elbow anomalies, and iliac horns. Its association with congenital talipes equinovarus, or clubfoot, is extremely uncommon and rarely documented.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 1.5-year-old male child, born of a 2° consanguineous marriage, who presented with bilateral clubfoot and complete absence of fingernails. Great toenails were absent bilaterally, whereas the remaining toenails were preserved. The patellae were non-palpable clinically, and ultrasound…

A hospital-based cross-sectional study was undertaken to determine proportion of gross congenital malformation (GCMF) occurring at intramural births. Rate of GCMF was found to be 16.4/1000 consecutive singleton births (>28 weeks) with three leading malformation as anencephaly (44.68%), talipes equinovarus (17.02%) and meningomyelocele (10.63%). Higher risk of malformed births were noticed amongst un-booked (2.07%) in-comparison to booked (1.01%) mothers; women with low level of education (up to 8 years [2.14%] vs. at least 9 years of schooling [0.82%]); gravida status of at least 3 (2.69%) fol…

We present two patients with Atelosteogenesis Type I (AO type I) caused by two novel Filamin B (FLNB) mutations affecting the same FLNB residue: c.542G > A, predicting p.Gly181Asp and c.542G > C, predicting p.Gly181Arg. Both children had typical manifestations of AO type I, with severe rhizomelic shortening of the extremities, limited elbow and knee extension with mild webbing, pectus excavatum, broad thumbs with brachydactyly that was most marked for digits 3-5, dislocated hips and bilateral talipes equinovarus. Facial features included proptosis, hypertelorism, downslanting palpebral fissure…

Short rib polydactyly syndrome (SRPS) type II is a rare, autosomal recessively inherited, lethal skeletal dysplasia characterized by polydactyly, short limbs, short and horizontal ribs, a short ovoid tibia and major organ anomalies. We report a patient with a fetus with SRPS type II that presented at the 19th week of pregnancy for amniocentesis because of maternal age. During ultrasound pre-axial synpolydacytly, a short and ovoid tibia, nuchal edema, vertebral irregularities, hypoplastic thorax with short ribs and talipes were detected. All of the extremities were under the 5th percentile. Tho…

An 8-year-old mentally retarded boy had paired segmental areas of hyper- and hypopigmentation on the left side of his body in association with cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (CMTC) involving the trunk and the limbs, with the exception of parts of his right arm. At the age of 4 years, an aneurysmatic nodular lesion developed in the angle of his right elbow, and subsequently two similar lesions emerged on his forehead and scalp. Moreover, a dysmorphic facial appearance, scoliosis, genu valgum, talipes planus and increased laxity of joints were noted. The coexistence of paired achromic…

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of isolated minor congenital anomalies in a regional hospital in Oman.
METHODS: We determined the prevalence of isolated minor congenital anomalies in 21988 births during a 10-year period from January 1993 through December 2002 by using data from the hospital-based congenital anomaly register at Nizwa Hospital, Oman.
RESULTS: The total prevalence of congenital anomalies was 37 per 1000 births and that of minor anomalies 12.4 per 1000 births. Hypospadias, talipes deformity and polydactyly were the most common minor anomalies. A nurse or the house resident de…

The Robin sequence is a well-known cause of cleft palate and can be sporadic or familial, isolated or syndromic. We present a four-generation family with a lethal disorder inherited in an X-linked recessive pattern that includes Talipes equinovarus, Atrial septal defect, Robin sequence, and Persistence of the left superior vena cava. We have designated this disorder "TARP" syndrome. All affected males die in infancy of unknown causes. An X-chromosome linkage scan was performed using 14 unaffected members of a single large family and 40 STRP markers. The gene was mapped to an 11-cM region in Xp…

The initial treatment of congenital idiopathic talipes equinovarus (clubfoot) is most often nonsurgical. However, surgical treatment in the form of posteromedial release is often undertaken after failure of conservative measures. The prevalence of both immediate and long-term complications in surgically treated clubfeet has cultivated a renewed interest in nonsurgical treatment. The Ponseti method for treating clubfoot has seen a revived interest among those caring for infantile clubfeet. We report on our first 34 infants (57 clubfeet) treated by using the techniques and principles described b…

The most commonly reported manifestations of 16q deletions are severe growth and developmental disorders and anomalies of the craniofacial, visceral, and musculoskeletal systems. We reviewed the findings of patients reported with 16q- syndrome and compared them to our patient, a 4 1/2-year-old boy with a deletion of 16q23.1. Findings include psychomotor retardation, hypotonia, high forehead, hypertelorism, upslanting palpebral fissures, low-set abnormally modeled ears, and talipes equinovarus. Anomalies present in our patient not reported in others with 16q- syndrome include bilateral cataract…

Inveterate clubfoot (inveterate talipes equinovarus, ITEV) is a vicious attitude of the foot which doesn't rest on the floor through its normal base of support but weight is thrown to the outer side of the foot and to the foot point. When this vicious attitude persists a long time, it results in severe osteoarticular deformities in adults. Fixed ITEV is a good indication for tibiocalcaneal arthrodesis. In the majority of cases this provides painless and stable plantigrade foot. This study aims to assess the clinical and radiological outcomes of astragalectomy with tibiocalcaneal fusion. This c…

Micrognathia, glossoptosis, and cleft palate comprise one of the most common malformation sequences, Robin sequence. It is a component of the TARP syndrome, talipes equinovarus, atrial septal defect, Robin sequence, and persistent left superior vena cava. This disorder is X-linked and severe, with apparently 100% pre- or postnatal lethality in affected males. Here we characterize a second family with TARP syndrome, confirm linkage to Xp11.23-q13.3, perform massively parallel sequencing of X chromosome exons, filter the results via a number of criteria including the linkage region, use a unique…

Clinical and radiological results of surgical treatment of congenital clubfeet by an antero-lateral approach first introduced by Sotirow in 1976 are presented. The aim of this paper was to assess long-term results of this procedure on children (aged 5-18 months at the time of surgery). A series of 65 feet in 42 cases diagnosed with congenital talipes equinovarus was evaluated. Forty-two cases were treated conservatively with casts--changed on a weekly basis for 2-3 months and then every 2 weeks. Magone's score criteria were used to assess the method. Average follow-up was 7 years. Clinically 7…

The study of a family affected with hereditary distal myopathy with onset in early infancy is presented. Complete neurological examination was necessary in several members of the two last generations to discover the existence of the abnormalities of which they were unaware. The propositus was the most affected member of the family iwth distal paresis of the upper and lower extremities and selective paresis of the deltoid muscles. In addition he had kyphoscoliosis, talipes valgus and limitation of mobility of several joints. The onset of the disease was estimated as before the age of 2 when the…

BACKGROUND: Historically, talectomy has been predominantly performed to operatively treat severely rigid equinovarus feet. A limited number of investigators have studied functional outcomes in pediatric patients posttalectomy. We aimed to assess the outcomes of pediatric patients undergoing talectomy using the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and a subjective survey of patients' and their caregivers' satisfaction.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study that included 31 patients with nonidiopathic severely rigid talipes equinovarus, in a single center, using …
