A population-based case-control study of sun exposure and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was conducted in Western Australia in 1988. Leather tanneries around the world, including China, introduce chromium (Cr) and other metals into the environment. In China, the population pressure compels the utilization of every piece of available land for food production. We describe a 14 year-old male with a background of atopic dermatitis who developed a contact dermatitis reaction on the left arm to the leather straps of tefillin (phylacteries), a religious article worn by observant Jewish men from the age 13 years during most morning prayer services. On February 21, 2006, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDOH) reported to CDC and the New York City (NYC) Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) a case of inhalation anthrax in a man who resided in New York City. This report summarizes the joint epidemiologic and environmental investigation conducted by local, state, and federal public health, animal health, and law enforcement authorities in Pennsylvania and NYC to determine the source of exposure and identify other persons who were potentially at risk.

The preparation of stable formolized sheep cells coated with thyroglobulin and their use for the detection of auto-antibodies in human thyroiditis is described. This provides an easy laboratory test which gives results closely comparable with those using fresh tanned cells. The agglutination titres do not closely parallel the antibody content of the serum but a good correlation may be obtained by inhibiting agglutination with thyroglobulin. Ammonia inhibition represents a significant bottleneck in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of high-nitrogen organic wastes. This study employed a batch reactor system subjected to alternating carbon-sufficient and carbon-limited phases to investigate whether pulsed micro-aeration, with a peak oxidation-reduction potential ranging from -150 to -50 mV, could promote the conversion of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) to N2 in anaerobic digesters maintained under bulk anaerobic conditions, while simultaneously elucidating the competitive interplay between this nitrogen removal process and methanogenesis.
