Maintenance of bound or independent features in visual working memory is task-dependent.

Conflicting findings exist regarding whether features of an object are stored separately or bound together in visual working memory. This controversy is based on an implicit assumption about a default, or fixed, mode of working memory storage. We investigated whether the anticipated task might determine the format in which information is maintained in working memory, consistent with its task-oriented function. To test this flexible maintenance hypothesis, we recorded the EEG while participants performed a change detection task with different requirements and loads. Across three experiments, we

Interactions of working and long-term memory: Evidence from Brown-Peterson and proactive interference effects.

How do working memory (WM) and episodic long-term memory (eLTM) interact to support immediate memory performance? Their contributions are often intertwined, reflecting a functional overlap that challenges clear-cut distinctions between the two systems. The present study investigates this interaction by assessing the combined effects of two diagnostic manipulations-proactive interference (PI) and secondary task effects (via Brown-Peterson-style filled retention intervals)-on binding tasks across varying set sizes. In Experiment 1, participants encoded word-object pairs and completed a four-alte

A benchmark study of vision and pathology foundation models for computational pathology.

To advance precision medicine in pathology, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven foundation models must generalize across diverse datasets, tissues, and clinical tasks. However, their comparative performance and generalizability in computational pathology remain incompletely characterized. Here, we benchmark 32 AI foundation models across four categories, including general vision models (VM), general vision-language models (VLM), pathology-specific vision models (Path-VM), and pathology-specific vision-language models (Path-VLM), using slide- and patch-level tasks from The Cancer Genome Atlas (

Attention, awareness, and the right temporoparietal junction.

The attention schema theory posits a specific relationship between subjective awareness and attention, in which awareness is the control model that the brain uses to aid in the endogenous control of attention. In previous experiments, we developed a behavioral paradigm in human subjects to manipulate awareness and attention. The paradigm involved a visual cue that could be used to guide attention to a target stimulus. In task 1, subjects were aware of the cue, but not aware that it provided information about the target. The cue measurably drew exogenous attention to itself. In addition, implic

Guanfacine enhances inhibitory control and attentional shifting in early abstinent cocaine-dependent individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Attenuation of adrenergic drive and cognitive enhancement, via stimulation of alpha2 pre- and post-synaptic receptors, may selectively enhance executive performance in early abstinent cocaine-dependent individuals. As these cognitive processes underpin important treatment-related behaviors, the alpha2 agonist, guanfacine HCl, may represent an effective pharmaco-therapeutic intervention. METHODS: Twenty-five early abstinent cocaine-dependent individuals were administered a battery of neurocognitive tasks on entry into treatment (baseline) and again following 3 weeks of either place

Truth, tone, and trust: integrating an AI exercise to foster responsible science communication in a graduate biomedical science course.

As generative AI becomes a standard fixture in graduate education, the pedagogical challenge has shifted from detection to integration. This article describes a curriculum intervention developed for Anatomy of Scientific Error, a graduate-level course on scientific error analysis in interdisciplinary research practice and communication at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. To inform the curriculum design, we first administered a needs-assessment survey to the cohort. Results revealed a critical trust gap: while students utilized generative artificial intelligence extensively

The temporal context of eye contact influences perceptions of communicative intent.

This study examined the perceptual dynamics that influence the evaluation of eye contact as a communicative display. Participants (n = 137) completed a task where they decided if agents were inspecting or requesting one of three objects. Each agent shifted its gaze three times per trial, with the presence, frequency and sequence of eye contact displays manipulated across six conditions. We found significant differences between all gaze conditions. Participants were most likely, and fastest, to perceive a request when eye contact occurred between two averted gaze shifts towards the same object.

The influence of induced shoulder muscle pain on rotator cuff and scapulothoracic muscle activity during elevation of the arm.

BACKGROUND: Altered recruitment of rotator cuff and scapulothoracic muscles has been identified in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome. To date, however, the cause-consequence relationship between pain and altered muscle recruitment has not been fully unraveled. METHODS: The effect of experimental shoulder pain induced by injection of hypertonic saline in the supraspinatus on the activity of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, trapezius, and serratus anterior activity was investigated during the performance of an elevation task by use of muscle functional magnetic reso

Predictive processing in time perception: Assessing prediction error minimization in the sub-second range.

The predictive processing theory proposes that minimization of prediction error is a governing principle of perception, learning, and behavior, yet few studies have directly tested this hypothesis in time perception. We operationalized prediction error minimization as updating of an internal temporal reference and examined whether reference updating follows the direction required to reduce systematic prediction error. Across two experiments, 60 university students (Experiment 1) and 359 adults from a broader age range (Experiment 2) performed a temporal generalization task. Reference updating

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with stepwise task orientation for upper limb function in stroke patients: neurological function test.

Stroke rehabilitation traditionally focuses on restoring motor function through physical exercises and training. However, conventional methods often lack a strong theoretical basis from modern neuroscience. Integrating these technologies into rehabilitation protocols shifts the focus from peripheral movement to a brain-centred model, using objective biomarkers for assessment. The study involved 87 chronic stroke patients divided into three groups: Group A received rTMS and task-oriented training, Group B received sham rTMS and task-oriented training, and Group C received conventional rehabilit

Microstates and connectivity states reveal task-related network reorganization in Alzheimer's disease patients.

OBJECTIVE: Microstates derived from EEG amplitude and connectivity states from EEG phase examine distinct aspects of the brain's dynamic organization. However, it is unclear how sensitive they are to changes in functional connectivity in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We examined pre- and post-task alterations of brain activity in AD patients to compare the ability of microstates and connectivity states to capture disease-related network dysfunction. METHODS: Resting-state EEG (RS-EEG) was recorded before and after a memory task in fifteen patients with AD and fifteen healthy controls. During the

Long-term effects of concussion on attention, sensory gating and motor learning.

The current work aimed to understand the behavioral manifestations that result from disruptions to the selective facilitation of task-relevant sensory information at early cortical processing stages in those with a history of concussion. A total of 40 participants were recruited to participate in this study, with 25 in the concussion history group (Hx) and 15 in the control group (No-Hx). Somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) were elicited via median nerve stimulation while subjects performed a task that manipulated their focus of attention toward or away from proprioceptive cues. Impaired cognitive plasticity and goal-directed control in adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Youths with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experience severe distress and impaired functioning at school and at home. Critical cognitive domains for daily functioning and academic success are learning, memory, cognitive flexibility and goal-directed behavioural control. Performance in these important domains among teenagers with OCD was therefore investigated in this study. METHODS: A total of 36 youths with OCD and 36 healthy comparison subjects completed two memory tasks: Pattern Recognition Memory (PRM) and Paired Associates Learning (PAL); as well as the Intra-Extra Dimen

Decreased efficiency of task-positive and task-negative networks during working memory in schizophrenia.

Working memory (WM) is one of the most impaired cognitive processes in schizophrenia. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in this area have typically found a reduction in information processing efficiency but have focused on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. In the current study using the Sternberg Item Recognition Test, we consider networks of regions supporting WM and measure the activation of functionally connected neural networks over different WM load conditions. We used constrained principal component analysis with a finite impulse response basis set to compare the est

Procedural errors in air traffic control: effects of traffic density, expertise, and automation.

INTRODUCTION: Air traffic management requires operators to frequently shift between multiple tasks and/or goals with different levels of accomplishment. Procedural errors can occur when a controller accomplishes one of the tasks before the entire operation has been completed. The present study had two goals: first, to verify the occurrence of post-completion errors in air traffic control (ATC) tasks; and second, to assess effects on performance of medium term conflict detection (MTCD) tools. METHODS: There were 18 military controllers who performed a simulated ATC task with and without automa

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation over frontal eye fields disrupts visually cued auditory attention.

Voluntary eye movements and covert shifts of visual attention activate the same brain regions. Specifically, the intraparietal sulcus and the frontal eye fields (FEF) appear to be involved both with generating voluntary saccades as well with attending to a peripheral spatial location. Furthermore, these regions appear to be required by both tasks--functional disruption of these regions impairs both tasks. Therefore, it appears that the targeting system that allows us to plan saccades is the same system that allows us to covertly track peripheral visual information. Recent neuroimaging studies

Effects of acute transcranial direct current stimulation in hot and cold working memory tasks in healthy and depressed subjects.

Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) hypoactivity and subcortical hyperactivity have been associated to cognitive impairment for non-emotional ("cold") and emotional ("hot") working memory tasks in major depressive disorder (MDD). We investigated whether an increase of DLPFC activity using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) would differently influence the performance in working memory tasks in depressed and healthy subjects. Forty young adult participants (20 with MDD and 20 healthy controls) were randomized to a single, sham-controlled, bifrontal (left anodal/right cathodal), 2m
