To identify potential vaccine candidates against Ixodes ricinus and tick-borne pathogen transmission, we have previously sequenced the salivary gland transcriptomes of female ticks infected or not with Bartonella henselae. The hypothesized potential of both IrSPI (I. ricinus serine protease inhibitor) and IrLip1 (I. ricinus lipocalin 1) as protective antigens decreasing tick feeding and/or the transmission of tick-borne pathogens was based on their presumed involvement in dampening the host immune response to tick feeding. Vaccine endpoints included tick larval and nymphal mortality, feeding,

We compared the application of IC2, a minimal-risk (25B) botanical compound containing 10% rosemary oil, with bifenthrin, a commonly used synthetic compound, and with water for the control of Ixodes scapularis Say (= Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin), on tick-infested grids in Maine, in an area where Lyme disease is established and other tick-borne diseases are emerging. High-pressure sprays of IC2, bifenthrin, and water were applied during the peak nymphal (July) and adult (October) seasons of the vector tick. No ticks could be dragged on the IC2 grids within 2 wk of the Ju

BACKGROUND: Anaplasma marginale and Anaplasma ovis are tick-borne obligate intracellular bacteria causing anaplasmosis in cattle and small ruminants, respectively, with considerable economic losses worldwide. Given the favorable ecological conditions for tick survival and the limitation of data on Anaplasma spp. in local tick populations in northwestern Iran, this study aimed to molecular and phylogenetic analysis of A. ovis and A. marginale in Ixodidae infesting livestock in northwestern Iran.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 780 ixodid ticks were collected from livestock a

Ectoparasitic diseases have been reported in travelers returning from both developed and developing nations.(1-3) Ectoparasitic diseases afflict the skin and its appendages and orifices, especially the scalp, facial, and pubic hairs; external ears; nares; orbits and eyelids; and genitourinary and rectal orifices. Like endoparasites, ectoparasites may be either obligatory parasites, which need to feed on human hosts to complete their life cycles, or facultative parasites, which prefer to feed on nonhuman hosts and infest humans only as accidental or dead-end hosts.(4,5).

Ectoparasites are a common problem in small ruminants of North America. Management of ectoparasites in small ruminants can be challenging for producers and veterinarians. It is important for the veterinarian to make an accurate diagnosis of the type of ectoparasite that is infesting the animal, then to develop a plan that most effectively and economically controls the ectoparasite. Effective and economic control of an ectoparasite infestation begins with an understanding of the ectoparasite's life cycle and how that life cycle affects the animal. It should be noted that climate and geographica

We examined the role of lizards in the ecology of Lyme disease in New York and Maryland. We collected data on vector tick infestations, measured lizard "realized" reservoir competence for the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, and estimated lizard population density. These data were incorporated into a model that predicts a host's ability to influence the prevalence of B. burgdorferi in the tick population, a primary risk factor in the epidemiology of Lyme disease. Published data on other northeastern hosts were included in the model to provide a reference for interpreting the impor…

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is caused by Borrelia spirochetes transmitted to humans by Argasid soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros. We investigated the presence of Ornithodoros ticks in rodent burrows in nine sites of the Gharb region of northwestern Morocco where we recently documented a high incidence of TBRF in humans. We assessed the Borrelia infection rate by nested PCR and sequencing. All sites investigated were colonized by ticks of the Ornithodoros marocanus complex and a high proportion of burrows (38.4%) were found to be infested. Borrelia infections were observed in 6.8% of t

The tick Amblyomma sculptum is the vector of the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii (which causes Brazilian Spotted Fever in humans). It can be found in domestic and wild animals, as well as humans. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of baits containing fluazuron in the control of A. sculptum in guinea pigs that were artificially infested. The work was conducted in two studies: descriptive pharmacokinetics and efficacy. Descriptive pharmacokinetics was assessed after administering one fluazuron-containing bait per animal (10 mg/kg). To determine the pharmacokinetic profile, b

The Western Ghat region of Kerala has abundant flora and domestic and wild animal species that provide an ideal ecological niche for the ticks. Kyasanur Forest Disease virus (KFDV), a zoonotic tick-borne virus causing Haemorrhagic fever, commonly known as monkey fever is prevalent in the area. The tick infestations have been documented in the majority of household animals in Wayanad and risks are further amplified as the majority of the animals reared, graze in the adjoining forest areas and these animals are often housed in and around farmer's dwellings. Therefore, the farmers are at high ris…

Sciurus anomalus Güldenstädt, 1785, known as the Caucasian squirrel, is a rodent distributed in all geographical regions of Türkiye. The material of this study consists of ectoparasites collected from male S. anomalus found dead on the highway (Karasu, Sakarya, Türkiye). As a result of microscopic examination, the specimens were identified: ticks as Ixodes ricinus Linnaeus, 1758 (larvae and nymph), sucking louses as Neohaematopinus syriacus Ferris, 1923 (female), and fleas as Monopsyllus sciurorum sciurorum (Schrank, 1803) (female and male). In this study, the presence of Ixodes ricinus infest

Dromedary camels Camelus dromedarius Linnaeus (Artiodactyla, Camelidae) are vital to the livelihoods of nomadic and pastoralist communities in the Sahara Desert. However, they are susceptible to ectoparasites, which can significantly impact their health and productivity, as well as their potential role in transmitting zoonotic diseases. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, species composition and infestation levels of ectoparasites in dromedaries from different camel herds (CH) across northern Algeria's Sahara Desert. Additionally, we assessed the effects of CH and camel age and sex

Sixty male weaner cattle at the National Range Research Station, Kiboko, Kenya were placed in four groups of 15 animals under four different tick control regimens for 16 months. The treatment groups were: spraying with acaricide weekly, spraying every three weeks, spraying whenever group mean tick infestations reached more than 200 per animal (once only in the course of the study) and a control unsprayed group. The cattle were weighed monthly. There were no significant differences between the liveweight gains of the groups during a period of severe drought and during the following period of co…

Genetically mast cell-deficient WBB6F1-W/Wv mice showed an apparent defect in manifestation of the resistance against larval Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks, but their serum IgE levels increased more than 100-fold after the second tick infestation. Immune sera obtained from the WBB6F1-W/Wv mice were adoptively transferred to the other WBB6F1-W/Wv mice which had received intracutaneous injections of WBB6F1-+/+ mouse-derived cultured mast cells. Because the resistance against ticks was detectable only when both mast cells and IgE antibodies were available, immediate hypersensitivity reaction app

Ticks of the Genus Rhipicephalus occur worldwide. Especially members of Rh. sanguineus s.l. are primarily associated with dogs. As unwanted souvenirs, they are introduced by dogs into non-endemic areas such as Germany, where they can establish and reproduce indoors. A citizen-science study was conducted between 2019 and 2024, asking interested citizens to report tick infestations and send in travel related tick findings which were associated with dogs and were focused on Rhipicephalus species. Tick species were identified using the 16S rRNA gene and tested for pathogens associated with the gen…

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a deadly tick-borne disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. An ongoing epidemic of RMSF is affecting tribal communities in Arizona, with nearly 500 cases and 28 deaths since 2003. The San Carlos Apache Tribe has been consistently working to prevent RMSF using tick collars on dogs, pesticide treatments around homes, and increasing education for nearly a decade. Besides monitoring human disease levels and tick burden on dogs, we have little understanding of the long-term impact of prevention practices on tick abundance and infection rates in

This chapter describes a standardized experimental protocol to induce and analyze galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-Gal)-specific IgE responses in α-Gal-deficient (α1,3-galactosyltransferase knockout) mice. The absence of endogenous α-Gal in this model enables controlled sensitization to exogenous α-Gal-containing antigens from microbial, arthropod, and mammalian sources. The protocol integrates sequential oral exposure to α-Gal-expressing Escherichia coli O86:B7, capsule-based infestation with Ixodes ricinus nymphs, oral administration of porcine tissue homogenate, and subcutaneous injection of ti

The effects of season and habitat on the infestation of the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) by immature Ixodes scapularis were studied at Castle Rock State Park, northwestern Illinois, during June-October 1991. Relative density of larvae on mice was higher in mid-late summer (13.7 ticks per mouse) than during the rest of the study period, whereas prevalence of nymphal infestation was highest in early summer (33.3%). Relative density of I. scapularis larvae and prevalence of nymphs on mice did not differ significantly among bottomland forest, field-forest ecotone, and upland forest hab

For more than 100 years, tick fever and the cattle tick have caused tremendous financial loss to cattle producers around the world. Since Australia became infected with the disease and infested with its tick vector in the mid-19th century, a great deal of research effort has been directed towards their effective control by Australian farmers, administrators and scientists. Such research has yielded information which has facilitated the development of various control strategies that have equal application in other countries afflicted with the same problem. It has been demonstrated that integrat

Due to the ongoing expansion of Ixodes scapularis (blacklegged tick) throughout the northeastern and midwestern United States, there is need to identify the role wildlife hosts play in the establishment and maintenance of tick populations. To quantify and synthesize the patterns of I. scapularis and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and sensu lato prevalence relative to wildlife hosts, we reviewed the findings of independent studies conducted throughout the United States. We performed a comprehensive literature search from 1970 to 2017 using the ISS Web of Science Core Collection and the keyw
