Methamphetamine (meth) can greatly damage the prefrontal cortex of the brain and trigger dysfunction of the cognitive control loop, which triggers not only drug dependence but also emotional disorders. The imbalance between the cognitive and emotional systems will lead to crossmodal emotional deficits. Until now, the negative impact of meth dependence on crossmodal emotional processing has not received attention. Therefore, the present study firstly examined the differences in crossmodal emotional processing between healthy controls and meth dependents (MADs) and then investigated the role of

PURPOSE: To physiologically examine the impairment of cortical sensitivity to visual motion during acute elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP).
METHODS: Motion processing in the cat brain is well characterized, its X and Y cell visual pathways being functionally analogous to parvocellular and magnocellular pathways in primates. Using this model, we performed ocular anterior chamber perfusion to reversibly elevate IOP over a range from 30 to 90 mm Hg while monitoring cortical activity with intrinsic signal optical imaging. Drifting random-dot fields and gratings were used to characterize cor

Frames of reference play a central role in perceiving an object's location and reaching to pick that object up. It is thought that the ventral stream, believed to subserve vision for perception, utilises allocentric coding, while the dorsal stream, argued to be responsible for vision for action, primarily uses an egocentric reference frame. We have previously shown that egocentric representations can survive a delay; however, it is possible that in comparison to allocentric information, egocentric information decays more rapidly. Here we directly compare the effect of delay on the availability

It is generally accepted that in mammals visual information is sent to the brain along functionally specialized parallel pathways, but whether the mouse visual system uses similar processing strategies is not known. It is important to resolve this issue because the mouse brain provides a tractable system for developing a cellular and molecular understanding of disorders affecting spatiotemporal visual processing. We have used single-unit recordings in mouse primary visual cortex to study whether individual neurons are more sensitive to one set of sensory cues than another. Our quantitative ana

We have recently suggested that the brain uses its sensitivity to optic flow in order to parse retinal motion into components arising due to self and object movement (e.g. Rushton, S. K., & Warren, P. A. (2005). Moving observers, 3D relative motion and the detection of object movement. Current Biology, 15, R542-R543). Here, we explore whether stereo disparity is necessary for flow parsing or whether other sources of depth information, which could theoretically constrain flow-field interpretation, are sufficient. Stationary observers viewed large field of view stimuli containing textured cubes,

When a person tracks a small moving object, the visual images in the background of the visual scene move across his/her retina. It, however, is possible to estimate the actual motion of the images despite the eye-movement-induced motion. To understand the neural mechanism that reconstructs a stable visual world independent of eye movements, we explored areas MT (middle temporal) and MST (medial superior temporal) in the monkey cortex, both of which are known to be essential for visual motion analysis. We recorded the responses of neurons to a moving textured image that appeared briefly on the

Absolute auditory thresholds, frequency resolution and temporal resolution develop with age. It is still discussed whether low-level auditory performance is of clinical significance--specifically, for delayed maturation of central auditory processing. Recently, five new auditory tasks were used to study the development of low-level auditory discrimination. It was found that the development lasts up to the age of 16-18 years (on an average). Very similar tasks were now used with 432 controls and 250 dyslexic subjects in the age range of 7-22 years. For both groups the performance in one of the

This study investigated whether "asynchrony" in speed of processing (SOP) between the visual-orthographic and auditory-phonological modalities contributes to word recognition deficits among adult dyslexics. Male university students with a history of diagnosed dyslexia were compared to age-matched normal readers on a variety of experimental measures while event-related potentials and reaction time data were collected. Measures were designed to evaluate auditory and visual processing for non-linguistic (tones and shapes) and linguistic (phonemes and graphemes) low-level stimuli as well as higher

Orienting and focusing of visual attention are two processes strictly involved in reading. They were studied in a group of dyslexic children and normal readers. Shifting of attention by both peripheral and central visual cues was studied by means of the covert orienting paradigm. Focusing, consisting in the ability to control the size of the attentional focus, was investigated using simple reaction times in central vision. Results showed that dyslexics had a specific disability in the shifting of attention caused by a peripheral cue at short SOAs, and were also able to maintain attention focus

The aim of this study was to determine whether lateralization judgements show adaptation during a period of unilateral ear plugging. Six normally hearing young adults were tested repeatedly using pure tone stimuli of 500 and 4000 Hz to determine (i) the threshold in each ear, (ii) the interaural sensation level difference (ISLD) at which sounds presented alternately to the two ears were of equal loudness, and (iii) the ISLD at which sounds presented simultaneously to the two ears produced a centered internal sound image. Subjects were tested 9-14 times over one week before an ear plug, produci

A 23-year-old woman, blinded at an early age due to retinopathy of prematurity and cataract was successfully operated. After the operation the patient was behaviourally blind. Visual rehabilitation was started 9 months later and lasted 1 1/2 years. During this time the visual behaviour of the patient improved. Quantitative tests were designed to depict the progress. The functional improvement of the patient is in agreement with the findings of animal studies; binocular deprivation during the critical period of development causes behavioural blindness, which is partially recoverable. The result

Previous studies provided evidence of an ascending left-to-right spatial representation of time durations by using a technique affecting high levels of spatial cognition, i.e. prismatic adaptation (PA). Indeed, PA that induced a leftward aftereffect distorted time representation toward an underestimation, while PA that induced a rightward aftereffect distorted time representation toward an overestimation. The present study advances previous findings on the effects of PA on time by investigating the neural basis subtending these effects. We focused on the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) since i

OBJECTIVE: Shyness is a ubiquitous personality characteristic present across historical time and cultures. Yet, little is known about perceptions of shy adults in Western society. We examined emerging adults' perceptions of shy and sociable women and whether one's own personality influenced their perceptions.
METHOD: Participants (N = 301, Mage = 19.07 years) were randomized to read a vignette describing either a prototypical shy woman or a prototypical sociable woman and rated their perceptions of the woman in the vignette on various qualities. Participants' shyness and sociability were self

A multiphasic time model, integrating the past, present and future in close interrelations, is first presented and offers a contextual approach to the perceptions and responses of an individual according to his/her personal history and environment. The present and future prospects are in continuity with the past and its consequences and effects. The past, even when it is not or no longer expressed, influences the present and the future, and this over several generations. Past life events and experiences, as well as psychological and biological states previously experienced by the individual (s

Visual perception appears largely stable in time. However, psychophysical studies have revealed that low frequency (0.5 - 7 Hz) oscillatory dynamics can modulate perception and have been linked to various cognitive states and functions. Neither the contribution of waves around 5 Hz (theta or alpha-like) to cortical activity nor their impact during aberrant brain states have been resolved at high spatiotemporal scales. Here, using cortex-wide population voltage imaging in awake mice, we found that bouts of 5-Hz oscillations in the visual cortex are accompanied by similar oscillations in the ret

Slow change blindness, when attentive observers fail to notice large changes that happen gradually, raises questions about how visual information is combined across time. One plausible integration strategy is serial dependence: blending information from the recent past into current perception. Here, we investigate serial dependencies in perception of a cartoon object that slowly changes hue. In a one-shot experiment, observers each viewed a single trial with a random degree of hue change and provided one hue judgement response. Across participants, the entire morph was probed. Observers' hue r

When visual input has conflicting interpretations, conscious perception can alternate spontaneously between these possible interpretations. This is called bistable perception. Previous neuroimaging studies have indicated the involvement of two right parietal areas in resolving perceptual ambiguity (ant-SPLr and post-SPLr). Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies that selectively interfered with the normal function of these regions suggest that they play opposing roles in this type of perceptual switch. In the present study, we investigated this fractionation of parietal function by use

The objective of this study was to compare body size estimation based on memory versus perception, in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and healthy controls, adjusting for possible confounders. Seventy-one women (AN: 37, controls: 35), aged 14-29 years, were assessed with a computerized body size estimation morphing program. Information was gathered on depression, anxiety, time since last meal, weight and height. Results showed that patients overestimated their body size significantly more than controls, both in the memory and perception condition. Further, patients overestimated their body
