To investigate the microbial flora of the tonsils and adenoids, the core tissue from the tonsils and adenoids of 50 children undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy for either recurrent infection or airway obstruction was cultured aerobically and anaerobically, and the number of bacterial colonies was quantitated. A prospective study on the value of ultrasound (US) for the staging of 70 cases of cancer of the tongue and tonsil was performed. A real-time, high-frequency transducer was used, and the examination was often coupled with endobuccal palpation. US did not visualize the tumor in nine of 42 cases of tongue cancer (seven stage T1 and two anterior stage T2 tumors); US accurately defined tumor size in 33 cases. The efficacy of tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy in the management of urgent problems such as cor pulmonale, acute airway obstruction, or functional impairment of nasal respiration, speech, or swallowing is unquestioned. However, relative indications for surgery such as odynophagia, otalgia, or otitis media with effusion are more controversial. The limitations and risks of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in these patients are explored.

The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus strains from 118 tonsillectomized adults due to recurrent tonsillitis (RT).
