The Notch signalling pathway is an evolutionarily conserved intercellular signalling mechanism that is essential for cell fate specification and proper embryonic development. We have analysed the expression, regulation and function of the jagged 2 (Jag2) gene, which encodes a ligand for the Notch family of receptors, in developing mouse teeth. Jag2 is expressed in epithelial cells that give rise to the enamel-producing ameloblasts from the earliest stages of tooth development. Tissue recombination experiments showed that its expression in epithelium is regulated by mesenchyme-derived signals.

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) refers to a group of rare genetic disorders that involve tooth development and that are passed down through families as a dominant trait. This condition is characterized by abnormal enamel formation caused by gene mutations that alter the quality and/or quantity of enamel. This dental problem can impact both primary and permanent dentition, varies among affected individuals, and results in esthetic and functional problems. This condition caused the patient in the current case report to have a lack of confidence when speaking. The treatment for amelogenesis imperfec

AIM: The aim of the study was to predict the marginal bone level at a 5-year follow-up based on the information available from an initial radiographic examination and to evaluate the precision of the prediction by comparing the predicted bone levels with those actually observed at the follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 1997, 616 randomly selected dentate individuals underwent a full-mouth radiographic survey. In 2003, 473 of those individuals (77%) participated in a second radiographic examination. Marginal bone level, caries lesions, fillings, crowns, root fillings and periapical status we

Restoration of extensive defects in young permanent molars is more complex than that in mature permanent teeth. Young permanent teeth are characterized by insufficient enamel mineralization, large pulp chambers, short occlusogingival distance, and unstable gingival margins, limiting both mechanical retention and bonding conditions. In addition, individual factors such as patient cooperation, caries risk, and orthodontic needs further complicate treatment planning. Based on current clinical evidence, this review summarizes the indications, advantages, and limitations of direct adhesive restorat

In recent years, a wide variety of materials have been used in dental implant treatment. In selecting the superstructures and abutments to be used it is important to consider their potential effect on the stability and durability of the planned implant. Excessive force applied to an implant during maintenance commonly results in complications, such as fracture of the superstructure or abutment, and loosening or fracture of the screws. This report describes a case of implant treatment for a 23-year-old man with esthetic disturbance due to trauma to the maxillary anterior teeth. The left maxilla

AIM: This clinical report describes the oral rehabilitation of a young female patient diagnosed with the hypocalcified, autosomal recessive type of Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). A brief discussion on diagnosis of AI is also included.
BACKGROUND: AI has been defined as a group of hereditary enamel defects not associated with evidence of systemic disease. It can be characterized by enamel hypoplasia and/or hypomaturation or hypocalcification of the existing teeth. Restoration for patients with this condition should be oriented toward the functional and esthetic rehabilitation and the protection

The DMF index provides one source of information on past and present dental caries experience; however, important limitations hinder its ability to characterize fully the impact of dental caries. The purpose of this paper is to describe a measure of selected restoration and tooth conditions that supplements information from the DMF index and to report on the application of this measure as part of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, Phase 1, conducted between 1988 and 1991. Data from this survey were used to estimate the prevalence and severity of selected disaggregated

Dentine hypersensitivity in cervical areas and severe dentine sensitivity in teeth prepared for restorations were treated with a titaniumtetrafluoride solution. Patients included in the study complained spontaneously about the sensitivity in intact dentine surfaces. Thirty patients with at least one tooth on each side of the maxilla and/or mandible experiencing moderate or severe sensitivity in cervical areas participated. The degree of sensitivity was determined by scraping an explorer over the dentine surface and by air blast. At least one sensitive tooth on one side of the jaw was treated w

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of whole-tooth regeneration using a tooth germ-like construct. Dental pulp from upper incisors, canines, premolars, and molars were extracted from sexually mature miniature pigs. Pulp tissues were cultured and expanded in vitro to obtain dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), and cells were differentiated into odontoblasts and osteoblasts. Epithelial cells were isolated from gingival epithelium. The epithelial cells, odontoblasts, and osteoblasts were seeded onto the surface, upper, and lower layers, respectively, of a bioactive scaffold. T

There are six distinct types of resorption of dental hard tissue that occur in association with unerupted and impacted permanent teeth. These pathologic entities differ markedly from one another in terms of their aetiology, their treatment and their prognosis. In several of them, the continued existence of the affected tooth may be in danger while in others, conservative treatment may halt the resorption process and provide for a successful outcome. The treatment approach is specific for each type and is entirely dependant on the diagnosis. This presentation will discuss prevalence, aetiology,

Two Neandertal specimens from El Sidrón, northern Spain, show evidence of retained left mandibular deciduous canines. These individuals share the same mitochondrial (mtDNA) haplotype, indicating they are maternally related and suggesting a potential heritable basis for these dental anomalies. Radiographs and medical CT scans provide evidence of further, more extensive dental pathology in one of these specimens. An anomalous deciduous canine crown morphology that developed before birth subsequently suffered a fracture of the crown exposing the pulp sometime after eruption into functional occlus

Impacted maxillary permanent central incisor is not a frequently reported case in our dental practice. Dilaceration is one of the causes of failure of eruption of permanent maxillary incisor. It is a developmental anomaly of the form of a tooth that commonly occurs in permanent incisors .We report a case of a 14-year-old boy with an impacted central incisor in the maxillary region managed at Dr.H.Gordon Roberts's hospital, Meghalaya, India. The tooth was completely upside down with the crown facing towards the nasal floor and the root towards the alveolar process with severe dilaceration. Surg

Dilaceration is a dental deformity characterized by an angulation between crown and root causing non-eruption of the tooth. It generally occurs following trauma to the deciduous dentition the apices of which lie close to the permanent tooth buds. Surgical extraction used to be the first choice in treating the severely dilacerated teeth. In this case report, it is described how a dilacerated central incisor was successfully moved into alignment in a young patient with proper surgical and orthodontic management avoiding use of prosthetic/implant devices. The panoramic radiograph after the trauma

The teeth most commonly affected by trauma are the maxillary central incisors. The most frequent types of traumatic dental injuries to permanent teeth are enamel fractures, enamel and dentine fractures, and enamel and dentine fractures with pulp involvement. This article describes three clinical cases with different levels of traumatized maxillary incisors and several cosmetic approaches for recovery of the esthetics and the masticatory function, as well as the social/psychological aspects of treatment. All cases involved young adult men. The three clinical cases involve dentin and enamel frac

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of different edge compensation angles on the fracture strength of multilayer zirconia all-ceramic crowns and traditional uniform zirconia all-ceramic crowns.
METHODS: The resin tooth preparation specimen of the mandibular first molar with a knife-edge was fabricated. A 3D digital model of the specimen was obtained by scanning it with a 3D dental model scanner. The 3D digital model was imported into computer aided design (CAD) software, and three 3D digital models of the full crown with the same surface shape are designed with the edge compensation angles of

UNLABELLED: Anterior tooth fracture, as a result of traumatic injuries, frequently occurs in dentistry. Proper reconstruction of extensively damaged teeth can be achieved through the fragment reattachment procedure known as "Biological Restoration." This case report refers to the esthetics and functional recovery of extensively damaged central maxillary incisors through the preparation and adhesive cementation of "Biological Posts and Crowns" in a young patient. Both biological posts and crowns--post and dental fragment obtained through natural, extracted teeth from another individual--represe

Tooth enamel is the outer covering of tooth crowns, the hardest material in the mammalian body, yet fracture resistant. The extremely high content of 95 wt% calcium phosphate in healthy adult teeth is achieved through mineralization of a proteinaceous matrix that changes in abundance and composition. Enamel-specific proteins and proteases are known to be critical for proper enamel formation. Recent proteomics analyses revealed many other proteins with their roles in enamel formation yet to be unraveled. Although the exact protein composition of healthy tooth enamel is still unknown, it is appa…
