Transgender Incarceration and Law Enforcement as a Source of Harm: Upstream and Primordial Prevention Perspectives.

In the United States (US), transgender individuals are more likely to experience violence and sexual assault in jails and prisons compared with cisgender peers. Harms of incarceration on transgender individuals include limited access to medical care and hormone therapy, as well as being housed in facilities based on biological sex instead of gender identity. However, there has been insufficient research on addressing factors that lead to transgender individuals being incarcerated in the first place. In this article, we argue the need to focus on law enforcement interactions with transgender in

Inclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and Other Related Identities Content in Australian Physical Therapy Curricula: Perceived Barriers and Priorities for Inclusive Education.

INTRODUCTION: Providing culturally responsive, patient-centered care is crucial for ensuring safe and positive health care experiences for individuals with diverse gender identities and sexual orientations. Doing so requires adequate training and knowledge of the health professionals involved in those health care experiences. REVIEW OF LITERATURE: Individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other related identities (LGBTQIA+) experience significant barriers to health and positive health care experiences. In physical therapy, research has ident

The availability and type of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer content on sperm, oocyte, and embryo provider websites.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and quantify the character and amount of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ +) content on sperm, oocyte, and embryo provider websites in the USA. METHODS: Websites with LGBTQ + information were categorized into "minimal," "moderate," and "significant" content. The presence and type (category) of LGBTQ + content were assessed in its relationship to geographic regions, in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles/year, and website types. Interobserver reliability was assessed for the categorization system created. RESULTS: Out of 373 unique websites, 191 (51.2%)

Gender-inclusive clinical screeners: Using CBCLs and YSRs in a clinic-based sample of transgender/gender-diverse youth.

This study examines differences in score profiles on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self-Report (YSR) for transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth in a clinical setting. Data were collected from youth receiving services at a gender care clinic in the Midwestern United States. Inclusion criteria were youth that identify as transgender, nonbinary, or another gender-diverse identity label between the ages of 6 and 18 and received services between October 2017 and November 2021. The analytic sample (N = 177) included 51.4% transmasculine, 17.5% transfeminine, 22.6% nonbinary/gende

Young transgender individuals' lived experiences of facing life's challenges: a qualitative study in Iran.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, several studies have addressed the challenges and psychological issues that transgender individuals face. However, only a few studies have explored the experiences of this population in Iran. Life experiences are heavily influenced by the dominant religious and cultural conditions and common beliefs in a society. The present study aimed to investigate transgender individuals' lived experiences of facing life's challenges in Iran. METHODS: This is a qualitative study with a descriptive and phenomenological design conducted from February to April 2022. Data were c

Components of hostility and discrimination in cardiology.

The Gender-Diverse (TGD) population in Mexico faces significant health challenges, such as limited access to healthcare and a prevalence of adverse conditions. Cardiology is crucial for this population due to a high prevalence of risk factors and cardiovascular diseases. Despite a lack of precise data, it is estimated that 0.5-1.5% of the population identifies as TGD. They encounter sociocultural challenges, including discrimination and stigma, contributing to health issues and a lack of treatment access. Cardiovascular risk factors, hormone self-administration, and barriers to healthcare acce

Masculinizing and defeminizing gender-affirming surgery.

Transmasculine transgender and gender-diverse individuals may request gender-affirming surgery, standalone or in addition to other interventions. The choices and preferred outcomes of surgery can be highly individual. Besides surgeons' technical skills and patient physique, professionals in this field should be able to cooperate with other disciplines and with patients. The most requested surgery is masculinizing chest surgery, aiming to create a masculine chest with minimal scarring. For genital surgery, metoidioplasty refers to the procedure where the hypertrophic clitoris is released and po

Technological advances in penile implants: past, present, future.

Attempts to "cure" erectile dysfunction (ED) are as old as recorded history. The history of penile prosthetic devices dates back over 500 years, when a French military surgeon designed the first known wooden prosthesis to support micturition. There have since been a great many technological advancements in penile prosthetics. Penile implants for the improvement of sexual function date to the twentieth century. Like all human endeavors, penile prosthesis innovations have progressed via trial and error. This review aims to provide an overview of penile prostheses for the treatment of ED since th

Gendered Differences in Experiences of Bullying and Mental Health Among Transgender and Cisgender Youth.

Even though previous studies have shown that transgender youth have poorer mental health and more experiences of being bullied than their cisgender counterparts, and that bullying associates with poorer mental health, knowledge on such associations in different gender identity groups is scarce. This study investigated how mental health problems and experiences of being bullied appear across different gender identity groups, and how bullying is associated with mental health among the groups in question. Data from the Finnish School Health Promotion 2021 study (n = 152,880, mean age 16.2 years (

Transition Regret and Detransition: Meanings and Uncertainties.

Gender transition is undertaken to improve the well-being of people suffering from gender dysphoria. However, some have argued that the evidence supporting medical interventions for gender transition (e.g., hormonal therapies and surgery) is weak and inconclusive, and an increasing number of people have come forward recently to share their experiences of transition regret and detransition. In this essay, I discuss emerging clinical and research issues related to transition regret and detransition with the aim of arming clinicians with the latest information so they can support patients navigat

An introduction to gender affirming healthcare: What the family physician needs to know.

Gender affirming healthcare (GAHC) is a relatively new field in primary health care that describes a range of gender affirming practices, including hormone therapy, for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people. In 2019, gender affirming hormones were approved by South African National Essential Medicine List Committee (NEMLC) for tertiary-level care, and in October 2021 the Southern Africa HIV Clinicians Society published a GAHC guideline for South Africa. Unfortunately, TGD people still experience discrimination and stigmatisation in healthcare facilities in South Africa, leading to poor a

A Descriptive Account of the Nature and Extent of Transgender Homicide in America, 2010 to 2021.

There is a growing acknowledgment of transgender homicide as a serious social and public health issue; indeed, the American Medical Association has even referred to violence against transgender people as an "epidemic." Addressing this issue, however, requires understanding the patterns associated with this violence. Yet, reliable data for doing so does not currently exist, especially in recent years. As such, the prevalence of these incidents and their key features are not easily understood. The current study addresses this issue using a comprehensive nationwide database on 305 instances of ho

Endometrioid Endometrial Carcinoma With NKX3.1 Expression in a Transgender Man: A Case Report.

Endometrial cancer in transgender men is rare, and its histopathologic features remain unknown. A 30-yr-old transgender man with an intrauterine tumor, an ovarian mass, and a 2-yr history of testosterone use was referred to us for treatment. The presence of the tumors was confirmed via imaging, and the intrauterine tumor was identified as an endometrial endometrioid carcinoma via endometrial biopsy. The patient underwent hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy, and lymph node dissection. Pathologic examination revealed grade 3 endometrioid endometrial carcinoma, and the sync

Causes of Death of Transgender and Gender Diverse Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) veterans face numerous challenges due to stigma and marginalization, which have a significant impact on their health and well-being. However, there is insufficient data on cause-specific mortality in TGD veteran populations in the U.S. The purpose of this study was to describe the leading causes of death in a sample of TGD veterans who received care from the Veterans Health Administration. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was conducted using Veterans Health Administration electronic health record data matched with death certificate records

Understanding the effect of gender-based violence on uptake and utilisation of HIV prevention, treatment, and care services among transgender women: a qualitative study in the greater Kampala metropolitan area, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Transwomen (also known as transgender women) are disproportionately affected by all forms of gender-based violence (GBV). The high prevalence of physical, sexual and emotional violence not only predisposes transwomen to HIV infection but also limits the uptake/access to HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. Despite the high prevalence of HIV infection and GBV among transwomen, there is limited evidence on how GBV affects the uptake and utilisation of HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. Therefore, this qualitative study explored how GBV affects uptake and utilisati

Unmet Needs for Ancillary Services and Associations with Clinical Outcomes Among Transgender Women with Diagnosed HIV: Medical Monitoring Project, United States, 2015-2020.

Purpose: Access to ancillary services-including HIV support services, non-HIV clinical services, and subsistence services-can support care engagement and viral suppression and reduce disparities among people with HIV (PWH). We used representative U.S. data to assess differences in unmet needs for ancillary services between transgender women with HIV and other PWH. In addition, we examined associations between unmet needs and clinical outcomes among transgender women. Methods: We analyzed 2015-2020 Medical Monitoring Project data among transgender women (N = 362), cisgender men (N = 17,319), an
