INTRODUCTION: The majority of emergency patients are admitted to hospital via the emergency department. Overcrowding in emergency departments results in dissatisfied patients, increased complication rates, and negative medicoeconomic consequences. To overcome these problems, sufficient personnel strength should be available depending on treatment duration and the patients' characteristics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, trauma and orthopedic patients were classified into six categories: ABT (history, findings, and therapy), RABT (X-ray and ABT), WABT (wound care and ABT), WRABT (wound care and

Since the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, the US military has treated more than 51,000 casualties and sustained more than 6,600 deaths. The past decade of conflict has solidified major advances in the use of blood component therapy and the liberal use of fresh whole blood during damage control resuscitation. This resuscitation strategy, combined with far forward damage control surgery, rapid aeromedical evacuation, and major improvements in critical care air transportation and personal protective equipment has led to a 90% to 92% survival rate in US casualt

BACKGROUND: Anesthesiologists and nurse anaesthesists have important roles in the management of in-hospital medical emergencies, and in trauma management. We investigated the extent of these services provided by the department of anaesthesiology at St. Olav University Hospital in Trondheim in the year 2002.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Missions involving emergency medical assistance were identified by a computer search in the department's database. We assessed medical aspects, place, time, and type of intervention.
RESULTS: We identified a total of 646 missions, of which 501 occurred in the emergen

Xylazine-associated wounds are a distinct, novel clinical entity characterized by co-occurrence with substance use, progressive necrosis of skin, muscle, tendon, and bone, and slow healing. In Philadelphia, the specter of limb loss, stigma, and shame has hung over hospital-based care for xylazine-associated wounds among people who use drugs (PWUD) and kept many people away from engaging in care. Continued engagement in harm reduction wound care nursing, however, offers an opportunity for PWUD to address their wounds and their fears with members of the medical world. Traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI) resulting in quadriplegia is a life-altering injury for patients and caregivers. We conducted a retrospective review of patients treated for tSCI and quadriplegia at a level 1 trauma center to assess quality of life (QOL), socioeconomic factors, and mortality. Patients and caregivers were surveyed. Of the 65 patients included, 33 contacts were made. Seventeen surveys were completed (12 caregivers and 5 patients). Six unreachable patients were confirmed alive via medical record. Mortality rate among these 39 accessible patients was 23% (n = 9). Medicaid and u

The mental health needs of Asian American older adults are complex and multifaceted. Despite their rich diversity, Asian American older adults face significant challenges, including mental health stigma, cultural stress, limited English proficiency, and historical trauma. In addition, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic reignited preexisting anti-Asian attitudes of hostility, discrimination, blame, and scapegoating. The historical context of Asian immigration to the United States, impact of race-based discrimination, and recent resurgence of anti-Asian hate crimes impact mental health in Asi

Therapy and rehabilitation of patients with craniocerebral trauma is particularly difficult to programme on account of the neuropsychological defects and personality changes found in this population. The Ulm rehabilitation hospital seeks to face up to this fact by intense interdisciplinary cooperation in the nursing and medical sector, the fields of logopaedics, Occupational Therapy, physiotherapy, immediate post-acute therapy including cerebral training, as well as the entire field of vocational rehabilitation. A dense time schedule has been established for graded introduction of the necessar

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is both a physically and psychologically devastating disease. This paper primarily deals with the physiological complications of the disease process, but the psychological trauma often associated with such an initially disfiguring disease leaves wounds that are not visible. Constant support of both the patient and the nursing staff is necessary to relieve some of the anxiety associated with this syndrome. Education and reassurance should be as much a part of the treatment process as drug therapy.Although minimal drug therapy is required in the treatment of Stevens-John

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a major public health and medicolegal concern. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) collaborate with law enforcement, crime laboratory analysts, victim advocates, and prosecutors, creating ethical tensions between survivor-centered care and forensic obligations, with trauma-informed, patient-centered care as the primary clinical commitment.
AIM: To provide an ethical analysis structured around the four biomedical principles, autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, to guide clinical decision-making in sexual assault care.
METHODS: A narrative revi

BACKGROUND: Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are widely used for long-term intravenous therapy, especially in cancer patients. Although generally safe, PICC-related complications such as catheter fracture and migration can pose serious risks.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 41-year-old female with lung adenocarcinoma who developed PICC catheter fracture, with the broken segment migrating into the pulmonary artery during chemotherapy. The patient presented without significant symptoms, and imaging confirmed the intravascular migration of the catheter fragment. After mul

Vascular access preservation is fundamental in hemodialysis patients to ensure dialysis adequacy, patient survival, and quality of life. Chemotherapy administration typically requires central venous access devices, which are associated with significant complications and potential compromise of future vascular access options. We describe two chronic hemodialysis-dependent patients in whom intravenous chemotherapy was administered via a pre-existing mature autogenous arteriovenous fistula (AVF). In both cases, chemotherapy was delivered through AVF puncture using a peripheral catheter on non-dia

Epidural analgesia is a key component in the management of inpatient pain relief, particularly in surgical and trauma patients, and those with comorbidities. When used appropriately epidurals can decrease a patient's opiate consumption, as well as reducing the risk of adverse cardiorespiratory outcomes. To non-anaesthetists, or those not versed in their usage, epidurals can appear complex and intimidating, and the potential complications, although rare, can be catastrophic if not picked up on in a timely fashion. This article demystifies the epidural for hospital clinicians, looking at the ana

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in children are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Severe TBIs account for 15,000 admissions annually and a mortality rate of 24% in children in the United States. The purpose of this article is to explore pathophysiologic events, examine monitoring techniques, and explain current treatment modalities and nursing care related to caring for children with severe TBI. The primary injury of a TBI is because of direct trauma from an external force, a penetrating object, blast waves, or a jolt to the head. Secondary injury occurs because of alteration

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Research indicates many people accessing mental healthcare have trauma history and often experience re-traumatization in acute mental health inpatient settings. Treatment for trauma is not routinely explored as a treatment option in mental health inpatient settings and consequently mental health professionals do not draw connections between the person with trauma history and their presenting mental health problems. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: People in acute mental health inpatient units are not asked about their previous trauma histo

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic floor muscles can undergo significant trauma and physical changes during childbirth. This may result in urine leaking involuntarily in postnatal mothers after normal vaginal delivery. Pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFME) have been found to be beneficial in preventing urinary incontinence after delivery.
OBJECTIVES: This project aimed to prevent and reduce urinary incontinence among postnatal mothers who received PFME education prior to discharge. This was achieved through the implementation of best practice recommendations.
METHODS: This project was guided by the JBI Evi

BackgroundHomelessness among women and children is a growing concern, shaped by intersecting structural inequities. Service providers working with women who are homeless, particularly those who are pregnant and/or parenting young children, navigate complex responsibilities that span legal, medical, housing, child welfare, and psychosocial domains. These responsibilities are often carried out in under-resourced environments and in response to trauma rooted in systemic injustice. A feminist pragmatist perspective recognizes the relational, embodied, and context-specific nature of this work, and
