OBJECTIVES: The timely diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is challenging. Although pathogen-derived circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has been detected in humans, the significance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)-cfDNA detection in patients with PTB remains unclear.
METHODS: This study enrolled patients with PTB and persons with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) as the study and control groups, respectively, from 2018 to 2020. We measured interferon-γ levels and calculated blood monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR). We conducted plasma cfDNA extraction, quantitative polymerase chai

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) are major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Epidemiologic studies indicate an increased risk of tuberculosis in patients with COPD; however, the shared molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of these two diseases remain insufficiently understood. Objective. Based on a comparative bioinformatics analysis of peripheral blood transcriptomic profiles in patients with COPD and pulmonary tuberculosis, to identify common systemic immune mechanisms associated with the pathogenesis of both diseases. Gene e

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) have many similarities in clinical symptoms. In patients with etiology-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB), Aspergillus infection is easily overlooked, and missed diagnosis occurs. We attempted to analyze the clinical characteristics and risk factors of EPTB combined with CPA (EPTB-CPA), and to suggest to clinicians the possibility of CPA in EPTB patients.
METHODS: 58 patients with EPTB-CPA diagnosed and treated in Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital from April 2021 to March 2022 were retrospectively collected as the ca

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus fumigatus-induced chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), the most common pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) sequela, tends to occur after pulmonary infection with the intracellular pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Timely and accurate detection of A. fumigatus infection of pulmonary TB patients would undoubtedly greatly improve patient prognosis. Currently, the galactomannan (GM) antigen test is commonly used to detect A. fumigatus infection but has poor sensitivity that renders this assay inadequate for use in clinical practice.
DESIGN OR METHODS: Given the fact CPA

BACKGROUND: While tuberculosis is considered a risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a restrictive pattern of pulmonary impairment may actually be more common among tuberculosis survivors. We aimed to determine the nature of pulmonary impairment before and after treatment among people with HIV and tuberculosis and identify risk factors for long-term impairment.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study conducted in South Africa, we enrolled adults newly diagnosed with HIV and tuberculosis who were initiating antiretroviral therapy and tuberculosis treatment. We measured lung

Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and intended practices (KAP) of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients regarding the disease and home-based treatment. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the authors' hospital from 1 September 2024 to 28 February 2025, using a self-designed KAP questionnaire. Differences in KAP scores across demographic subgroups were analyzed, and the associations among knowledge, attitude, and practice were examined. Results: A total of 509 valid responses were included (effective rate: 90.73%). Participants were predominantly male (56.6%) and rur

Differentiating Crohn's disease (CD) from intestinal tuberculosis (TB) is a challenge. In patients suspected of having CD or intestinal TB compounded with active pulmonary TB in its early stages, clinicians often lean towards a diagnosis of intestinal TB. A 14-year-old female patient was admitted with symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea with hematochezia. Colonoscopy revealed a stricture of the ileocecal valve and scattered longitudinal ulcers. Initial chest radiography showed consolidation in the left lower lobe of the lung. Chest CT revealed branching nodular opacities and consolidation.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: The nature and frequency of mutations in rifampicin (RIF) and isoniazid (INH) resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates vary considerably according to geographic locations. However, information regarding specific mutational patterns in Ethiopia remains limited.
METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective study was carried out among confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis cases in Southwest Ethiopia. Mutations associated with RIF and INH resistances were studied using GenoType MTBDRplus line probe assay in 112 M. tuberculosis isolates. Culture (MGIT960) and identification tests w

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health concern, with long-term complications persisting even after successful treatment. Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is a progressive fungal disease that frequently develops in TB survivors, contributing to post-TB lung disease. The true burden of CPA among patients with TB remains unclear due to diagnostic challenges and limited data. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of CPA among patients with prior or concurrent TB.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic search in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Science Direct through 10

BACKGROUND: Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is known to complicate patients with post-tubercular lung disease. However, some evidence suggests that CPA might co-exist in patients with newly-diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis (P.TB) at diagnosis and also develop during therapy. The objective of this study was to confirm the presence of CPA in newly diagnosed P.TB at baseline and at the end-of-TB-therapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study included newly diagnosed P.TB patients, followed up at third month and end-of-TB-therapy with symptom assessment, anti-Aspergillu

BACKGROUND: In clinical settings, pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients were often found to have pulmonary fungal coinfection. This study aimed to assess the clinical characteristics of patients suffering from coinfection with TB and pulmonary fungal and construct a predictive model for evaluating the probability of pulmonary fungal coinfection in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.
METHODS: The present case-control study retrospectively collected information from 286 patients affected by PTB who received treatment from December 6,2016- December 6,2021 at Beijing Chest Hospital, Capital Med

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) remains a major public health challenge in low- and middle-income countries. PTB may leave residual cavitation following treatment in some patients, allowing saprophytic colonization by Aspergillus species, resulting in a slow, progressive lung condition known as chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA). PTB is the commonest underlying condition in CPA, mainly post-treatment. CPA is likely to be misdiagnosed as PTB reactivation due to clinical and radiological similarities. Ghana has a significant PTB burden, but only one case of clinically and radiologica

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary artery aneurysms constitute <1% of aneurysms occurring in the thoracic cavity. Congenital cardiac defects are responsible for the majority (>50%) of cases, however, pulmonary artery aneurysm is a rare sequelae of pulmonary tuberculosis reported in about 5% of patients with chronic cavitary tuberculosis on autopsy. The natural history of this potentially fatal condition remains poorly understood and guidelines for optimal management are controversial.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old man, a nursing student of African descent, was referred to us from an up-country regional

BACKGROUND: A study was undertaken to establish the chronic effect of initial and recurrent treated pulmonary tuberculosis on impairment of lung function.
METHODS: A total of 27 660 black South African gold miners who had reliable pulmonary function tests from January 1995 to August 1996 were retrospectively followed for the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis to 1970. The lung function measurements in 1995-6 were related to the number of previous episodes of tuberculosis and to the time that had lapsed from the diagnosis of the last episode of tuberculosis to the lung function test.
