Clinical features of 47 cases of temporal lobe epilepsy are analyzed and treatment of this disorder is outlined. Twenty-four per cent of all cases of epilepsy seen by one of the authors over a two-year period were of this type. Fifteen of these 47 patients had a history of birth injury. Care must be taken to distinguish the symptoms of temporal lobe epilepsy from those of acute anxiety or hysteria and to differentiate the short-lived temporal lobe attack from centrencephalic petit mal.Interictal personality disturbances were identified in 11 of 24 persons with temporal lobe epilepsy, four of 3

Forty-five patients aged 34 to 67 years who had coronary heart disease (CHD) were examined. Anaprilin was given in a dose of up to 120 mg daily. Concurrently with positive changes in the anginal syndrome there were improved sleep, decreases in hot temper, irritability, anxiety, phobic manifestations, hypochondrical trends, and neurotic asthenization, increased working and social orientation. During anaprilin therapy, cardialgias reduced or disappeared, the incidence of arrhythmia decreased. There was a reduction in the personality profile in the scales "neurotic triad" and "psychoasthenia", si

OBJECTIVE: Among evidence-based treatments for personality disorder (PD), mentalization-based treatment (MBT) represents a manualized, long-term treatment. Both MBT and non-manualized psychotherapeutic treatments (NMT) are currently applied for patients with PDs in Norway. This clinical population is characterized by varying impairment of personality functioning (PF). Few have investigated how MBT and NMT are suited for the heterogeneity of personality problems presenting to health services and how they compare. This study aimed to investigate 1) characteristics of patients admitted to MBT ver

Delving into the complexities of embodied cognition unveils the intertwined influence of mind, body, and environment. The connection of physical activity with cognition sparks a hypothesis linking motion and personality traits. Hence, this study explored whether personality traits could be linked to biomechanical variables characterizing running forms. To do so, 80 runners completed three randomized 50-m running-trials at 3.3, 4.2, and 5m/s during which their running biomechanics [ground contact time (tc), flight time (tf), duty factor (DF), step frequency (SF), leg stiffness (kleg), maximal v

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This paper reviews and summarises the literature on assessment, diagnosis and management of personality disorder in people with intellectual disability. It will proceed to argue the implications of a mental health nurse practitioner in clinical practice.
BACKGROUND: Personality disorder is a potentially severe and disabling condition causing significant distress as well as presenting considerable challenges for service providers. Diagnosis in people with intellectual disability is controversial. However, it is considered that this population is at greater risk of these di

BACKGROUND: Few studies, to date, have investigated the relationship between self-damaging behavior and the presence of comorbid psychiatric diagnoses in eating disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the axis I and II comorbidity in subjects with bulimia nervosa who report self-injurious behavior and/or suicide attempt.
METHODS: The subjects were 95 patients with purging type bulimia nervosa who underwent a clinical evaluation assessing the presence of self-injurious behavior and suicide attempts, comorbidity for axis I and II psychiatric disorders and temperament.

BACKGROUND: The presence of a comorbid borderline personality disorder (BPD) may be associated with an increase of suicidal behaviors in patients with depressive and anxiety disorders. The aim of this study is to examine the role of borderline personality traits on recurrent suicide attempts.
METHODS: The Netherlands Study on Depression and Anxiety included 1838 respondents with lifetime depressive and/or anxiety disorders, of whom 309 reported at least one previous suicide attempt. A univariable negative binomial regression analysis was performed to examine the association between comorbid b

Personality traits of the patient with ischemic heart disease (IHD) are thought to determine disease course. Their level depends on clinical presentations of IHD including the presence of cardiac pain. The aim of the study was to identify the modifying effect of genes coding for serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR), serotonin receptor type 2A (A-1438G) and 2C (Cys23Ser) as well as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (Val66Met) on personality traits in pain and painless forms of IHD. We found interaction between pain and personality factors mediated by genetic variant. Pain syndrome was associated wi

Recently, attention has been drawn to a range of disturbances in personality functioning that commonly characterize individuals with a history of severe or prolonged trauma. Many of these features overlap with criteria for some of the Axis II personality disorders. The current study investigated the similarity of personality disorder features in different samples of patients with trauma histories, and specificity of such features compared to other psychiatric samples. Profiles of Axis II features, based on relative frequencies of individual disorder "diagnoses" derived from a common measure (P

Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity has been shown to be inversely associated with personality traits such as sensation seeking, impulsiveness and extraversion. Those personality traits have also been linked to vulnerability for substance abuse, e.g. tobacco smoking and early onset or "type 2" alcoholism. Compounds in cigarette smoke have been shown to be inhibitors of MAO, which has led several authors to claim that there is no association between alcoholism, which is the most studied psychiatric condition, and platelet MAO if the effect of smoking is removed. With regard to the associa

OBJECTIVE: Profiling patients who report early childhood trauma and emotional neglect may be useful for treatment planning. This study attempts to quantify a two-dimensional "trauma-neglect model" (Draijer, 2003) proposed to distinguish clinical profiles in terms of trauma-related, dissociative, and personality pathology.
METHOD: A sample of patients referred to a trauma program (n = 49) and a personality disorders program (n = 101) was extensively assessed. Cluster analysis was used to discriminate patients in terms of "psychiatric disease burden," based on symptom severity scores, type of d

Clinical assessment increasingly emphasizes six maladaptive domains of the DSM-5 and ICD-11 trait models, including negative affectivity, detachment, antagonism/dissociality, disinhibition, psychoticism, and anankastia. The present study aimed to validate the Persian version of the ICD-11 compatible Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form Plus, Modified (PID5BF + M). Data from a mixed sample including 1,615 adults (community N = 1,476 and outpatient N = 139) were used to assess the latent structure, congruence coefficients, reliability, convergent validity, and criterion validity of the PID

As Personality Disorder continues to be a subject of intense public and professional debate, this study has explored by means of an in-depth interview the views of fifty people to whom this diagnosis has been attributed, to include: demographic data, type of personality disorder and other diagnoses; its meaning for them; how they found out about the diagnosis; its impact; related life events, and value of different types of support. The interviewers were also people with the same diagnosis, who have been trained specifically for this purpose. The findings highlight the mainly negative impact o

INTRODUCTION: Probably the commonest neuropsychiatric sequela in persons who have had some type of cerebral lesion (of whatever origin) are the complaints of changes in the personality of the patient prior to the lesion which cause problems with the family, socially and at work. These problems have been grouped together under the same diagnosis in current psychiatric nosology called 'organic personality disorder'.
DEVELOPMENT: In this article we wish to point out the disadvantages due to this diagnosis which have a double origin. Firstly, it is based on the concept of personality, which has b

Background Substance use disorders (SUDs) frequently coexist with personality disorders (PDs), contributing to poorer treatment adherence, relapse, and clinical outcomes. Their coexistence with other psychiatric comorbidities further complicates management and highlights the need for comprehensive assessment. However, data regarding the prevalence and pattern of PDs among patients with SUDs in Indian tertiary care settings remain limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and pattern of PDs and personality traits among patients with SUDs, evaluate associated psychiatric comorbiditie

OBJECTIVE: A review of the literature reveals a consensus on the high prevalence of personality disorders among sexual offenders. Studies show that there is no unique personality profile for sex offenders. In France, little research has been conducted on this population with standardized assessment tools. The objective of the present study is to identify the distribution of personality disorders among sexual offenders using a new French questionnaire, i.e. the TD12. In view of the literature, we postulate that this tool will identify the diversity of personality disorders observed by various a

Conceptualizations of the nature of acquired personality disturbances after brain damage, especially to prefrontal cortex, have progressed from clinical observations of a large, disparate set of disturbances to theories concerning neuroanatomically-based subgroups with prefrontal damage. However, hypothesized subtypes have not yet been studied systematically. Based on our previous investigations of acquired personality disturbances, we hypothesized five subtypes of acquired personality disturbances: Executive Disturbances, Disturbed Social Behavior, Emotional Dysregulation, Hypo-emotionality/D

Previous research on subtypes of batterers has revealed at least two distinct types of batterers. One group (Type 1) demonstrates suppressed physiological responding during conflicts with their wives, tends to use violence in nonintimate relationships and manifests Million Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II) scale elevations on the Antisocial and Aggressive-Sadistic scales. The second group (Type 2) manifests violence in the intimate relationship only and reports dysphoria. The current study extends our knowledge of these two groups by using a cluster analysis to assess personality disorde
