OBJECTIVE: To analyze the results obtained in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for perforated duodenal ulcer.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: From January 2000 to August 2006, 15 consecutive patients with perforated duodenal ulcer underwent laparoscopic surgery after preoperative selection (ASA scores, time since onset of the perforation).
RESULTS: The mean age was 44.6 +/- 15.5 years (range, 18-75). There were 10 men and five women. Fourteen patients were ASA I-II. Time since onset of perforation was more than 12 hours in only one patient. Operative time was 70.5 +/- 9.6 minutes. There were tw…

Crohn's disease (CD) in children younger than 5 years of age is termed as early onset inflammatory bowel disease (EO-IBD). We report a 4 yr 6 mo-old child with EO-IBD, who presented with palatal ulcer, an extra intestinal manifestation of Crohn's disease as the dominant feature.

Although it has been reported that NSAID ulcer has been increasing in western countries, the epidemiology and treatment or prevention of this type of peptic ulcer have not been fully studied. Recently 'Guideline for the treatment of gastric ulcer' has been published in Japan. Based on the data described in the guideline, at present it is recommended to use misoprostol, protonpump inhibitor, or high dose of H2 receptor in the prevention of NSAID ulcer. In the treatment of NSAID ulcer, to stop NSAID and/or to use misoprostol or protonpump inhibitor are recommended.

To assess the magnitude of the Buruli ulcer (BU) problem in Cameroon, we conducted a cross-sectional survey in the Nyong River basin and identified on clinical grounds a total of 436 cases of active or inactive BU (202 and 234, respectively). Swab specimens were taken from 162 active cases with ulcerative lesions and in 135 of these (83.3%) the clinical diagnosis was confirmed by the IS2404 polymerase chain reaction.
