Urinary ascites secondary to forniceal rupture in a child with the Prune Belly Syndrome.

Despite adequate bladder catheterization, a neonate with Prune Belly Syndrome developed urinary ascites secondary to forniceal rupture. Treatment consisted of bilateral cutaneous pyelostomies. Even though most children with Prune Belly Syndrome respond to lower urinary tract drainage, a cutaneous pyelostomy may be necessary when the ureters are tortuous and do not drain adequately following bladder decompression.

Postoperative urinary retention following anterior cervical spine surgery for degenerative cervical disc diseases.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) may cause bladder dysfunction, urinary tract infection, and catheter-related complications. It is important to be aware and to be able to identify patients at risk of developing POUR. However, there has been no study that has investigated the incidence and risk factors for the development of POUR following anterior cervical spine surgery for degenerative cervical disc disease. METHODS: We included 325 patients (164 male and 161 female), who underwent anterior cervical spine surgery for cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy due to primary cervi

Are physicians aware of which of their patients have indwelling urinary catheters?

PURPOSE: Although infections associated with indwelling urinary catheters are common, costly, and morbid, the use of these catheters is unnecessary in more than one-third of patients. We sought to assess whether attending physicians, medical residents, and medical students are aware if their hospitalized patients have an indwelling urinary catheter, and whether physician awareness is associated with appropriate use of these catheters. METHODS: The physicians and medical students responsible for patients admitted to the medical services at four university-affiliated hospitals were given a list

Hyponatremia Is Associated With Urinary Retention: The Vasopressin-Dependent and -Independent Pathways.

Hyponatremia has numerous causes, and the vasopressin-independent and vasopressin-responsive pathways have been associated with the condition. Herein, we aimed to present a case of hyponatremia induced by urinary retention, a rare cause of hyponatremia. A woman in her 80s presented to the emergency department with malaise and difficulty in movement. Plasma sodium levels of 118 mEq/L, urinary retention, and an Escherichia coli urinary tract infection were detected. Her condition and plasma sodium levels resolved through urinary catheterization, sodium administration, and antibiotic treatment. E…

Follow-up of clean intermittent catheterization for children with neurogenic bladders.

Intermittent catheterization remains the primary method of treatment in the management of patients with neurogenic bladders such as those with meningomyelocele. In a follow-up of a previous study, we re-examined the urologic status of patients with neurogenic bladders continuing on a regimen of clean intermittent catheterization five years after the completion of the first study. Thirty-seven of the original 49 patients were available for follow-up, and no significant differences were found between those lost to follow-up and those included in this study. Among the patients re-evaluated, reflu

[Hazards and complications of endoscopic transurethral ureterolithotripsy and lithoextraction and means of prevention].

Complications related to ureterolithotomy and ultrasonic ureterolithotripsy performed under the control of visual endoscope were analyzed in 86 ureterolithiasis patients, methods of their prevention discussed. All the aforementioned complications were distributed into three groups: inapplicability of surgery due to anatomic and functional defects of lower and upper urinary tracts, intraoperative, and postoperative complications. The commonest ones were ureteral abruption and perforation, acute pyelonephritis, temporary vesicoureteral reflux. Their control measures were considered as relative m

Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections in Adult Patients.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections are among the more common types of nosocomial infection in Germany and are associated with catheters in more than 60% of cases. With increasing rates of antibiotic resistance worldwide, it is essential to distinguish catheter-associated asymptomatic bacteriuria from catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CA-UTI). METHODS: This review is based on publications from January 2000 to March 2019 that were retrieved by a selective search in Medline. Randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews in which the occurrence of CA-UTI in adult patients was a p

Comparing postoperative voiding dysfunction after mid-urethral sling using either a Babcock or Kelly clamp tensioning technique.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to compare postoperative urinary retention using the Babcock and Kelly clamps for retropubic midurethral sling (RPS) tensioning. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort of isolated RPS procedures from December 2010 through April 2016 by five fellowship-trained surgeons at two institutions. Slings were tensioned with a Babcock clamp by grasping a 3-mm midline fold of mesh (RPS-B) or a Kelly clamp as a spacer between the sling and suburethral tissue (RPS-K). Assessment of urinary retention included the primary outcome of postoperative catheterizat

A case of spontaneous rupture of the bladder.

Rupture of the bladder in the neonatal period followed by urinary ascites is rare and usually the result of umbilical artery catheterization. Patients may present with abdominal distension, oliguria or anuria, and signs of renal insufficiency. We present a case of urinary ascites in a premature neonate due to a spontaneous rupture of the bladder, and we discuss the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of this case.

Reduction of microbial adhesion on polyurethane by a sub-nanometer covalently-attached surface modifier.

Indwelling urinary catheters are a common medical device used to relieve urinary retention. Many patients who undergo urinary catheterization develop urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can lead to severe medical complications and high cost of subsequent treatment. Recent years have seen a number of attempts at reducing the rate of UTIs in catheterized patients via catheter surface modifications. In this work, a low cost, robust anti-thrombogenic, and sterilizable anti-fouling layer based on a covalently-bound monoethylene glycol hydroxide (MEG-OH) was attached to polyurethane, a polymeric …

Conservative management of adult neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction.

Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLTUD) is commonly encountered in neuro-rehabilitation settings and is caused by a variety of pathologies. The management of spinal cord injury (SCI) has been the model of reference for the approach to NLTUD due to many other diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. The decline in renal-related mortality in SCI patients after the introduction of clean intermittent catheterization in association with pharmacological treatment (antimuscarinics in particular), and the algorithms proposed since 1998 by the International Consultations on Inc

Percutaneous ureteral catheterization in laparoscopic surgery: value of nephroscopy needle trocar.

OBJECTIVES: To report our experience with use of the nephroscopy needle trocar for percutaneous catheterization. In multiple urologic procedures, surgeons use ureteral catheters to decrease morbidity, increase the success rate, and allow for postoperative radiographic follow-up. The advent of laparoscopic surgery has logically required catheterization to be adapted to our laparoscopic procedures. METHODS: The expansion of our daily practice to include multiple laparoscopic procedures showed us the difficulties inherent to ureteral catheterization in laparoscopic surgery. During our experience

Clean intermittent catheterization reverses hydronephrosis in a child with congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (CNDI) is most frequently caused by mutations in the AVPR2 gene. Patients exhibit persistent polyuria due to renal insensitivity to antidiuretic hormone. Chronic high urine output predisposes to bladder dysfunction and upper urinary-tract dilatation, notably hydronephrosis. Although pharmacotherapy can partially reduce urine volume, its capacity to reverse established hydronephrosis is limited. Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC), a mainstay in managing neurogenic bladder, warrants investigation regarding its utility in CNDI-associated

Perineal xanthogranulomatous pseudotumor due to intermittent catheterization: a liposarcoma mimic. Case report.

A large perineal fatty tissue mass shown to be an encapsulated xanthogranulomatous reaction was found in a spinal cord injured man whose neuropathic bladder was for a long time being managed by clean intermittent catheterization, but who had chronic urinary tract infection. He was also known to be a chronic alcoholic. We would say that an alcohol numbed sensorium and multiple catheterizations led to recurrent small urethral perforations which in the setting of chronic bacteriuria promoted the unusual inflammatory mass. Appreciating the increasing use of clean intermittent catheterization for t
