The prevalence of urinary incontinence and the use of incontinence aids was investigated in 85-year-old men and women resident in the city of Göteborg. The overall prevalence of urinary incontinence was 37.2%. Urinary incontinence was more prevalent (p less than 0.001) in women (43.2%) than men (24.0%), and in residents of a nursing home or hospital (83.9%) than in men and women living at home (29.4%). Urinary incontinence was more commonly encountered in men with neurological (p less than 0.001) and respiratory (p less than 0.05) illnesses, and in women suffering from cardiovascular (p less t…

Eighteen women with urodynamically proven genuine stress incontinence awaiting surgery and 23 normal, asymptomatic, continent female volunteers took part in a study to compare the accuracy of a qualitative pad test with a quantitative pad-weighing test in detecting urine loss. Each woman took 600 mg of phenazopyridine hydrochloride (Pyridium, Parke-Davis) in three equally divided doses over 18-24 hours and then underwent a standardized, one-hour pad test as described by the International Continence Society. The Pyridium pad test was regarded as positive if there was any orange staining on the

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Urinary urge incontinence is a chronic, debilitating condition that is difficult to treat. Patients refractory to standard antimuscarinic therapy often experience recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs). The microbiota of these refractory patients with rUTI remains unexplored.
METHODS: A midstream urine (MSU) sample was collected from patients with refractory urge incontinence and coexistent rUTI during acute symptomatic episodes. Culture-based diagnosis was performed using routine microbiological methods. Culture-independent profiling was performed using bacte

The results of bacteria isolated from the urine of inactive elderly patients with urinary incontinence in 1982, 87, 93 and 95 were compared and the chronological changes of urinary bacteria were analyzed. The following results were obtained: (1) The most common bacteria isolated from the patients in 1995 were D-group Enterococcus, followed by Providencia rettgeri, E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis. It is thought that the main cause of the more frequent isolation of Enterococcus is an abuse of cephems and fecal contamination. (2) The most common bacteriaisolated from the pat…

BACKGROUND: Our study aims to determine whether different self-efficacy (SE) levels affect urinary incontinence symptoms, falls, quality of life, sleep, and physical activity in elderly individuals with incontinence. Our secondary aim is to examine the relationship between SE levels and urinary incontinence severity, quality of life, sleep status, fear of falling, and physical activity level.
METHODS: One hundred twenty elderly individuals (median age: 71 years) with urinary incontinence participated in the cross-sectional study. Participants were divided into 3 groups as levels of low, moder…

OBJECTIVES: To report the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) consensus document on the assessment and management of post-prostatectomy incontinence-stress urinary incontinence (PPI-SUI).
METHODS: We conducted a contemporary literature search to identify the current evidence base. A guideline development group was formed by the Female, Neurological and Urodynamic Urology (FNUU) Section of BAUS to formulate and review the recommendations. Where a lack of evidence was identified, expert opinion of the FNUU Executive Committee and a modified Delphi approach was utilised.

PURPOSE: The pathogenesis of bladder pain is poorly understood. Our hypothesis is that in women with urinary urgency without incontinence, bladder pain is associated with the presence of neurogenic inflammation in the bladder wall and neuroinflammatory biomarkers in the urine.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study of women with urinary urgency without incontinence. Urinary symptoms were measured using Female Genitourinary Pain Index. Neuropathic pain, a clinical biomarker of neuroinflammation, was measured using the PainDETECT questionnaire. Inflammatory neuropeptides meas

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a significant health concern affecting both men and women, leading to physical discomfort and psychological distress that can negatively impact quality of life. This condition affects individuals across all age groups and populations worldwide, with various risk factors contributing to its onset. A range of treatment approaches is available for managing UI. Conservative management, particularly physiotherapy, is typically the first line of treatment. This review aims to assess the current prevalence of UI in both men and women and to examine recent evidence-based l…

OBJECTIVE: A stepwise approach is recommended for the treatment of daytime urinary incontinence, with standard urotherapy as the first-line treatment, followed by pharmacological treatment when standard urotherapy is unsuccessful. This study was aimed at characterizing and comparing children with an overactive bladder and daytime urinary incontinence who became continent solely on standard urotherapy and those who achieved continence on a combination of standard urotherapy and pharmacological treatment.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 221 patients with complete continence during th…

The effects of aging are important in the workup and treatment of incontinence after prostate treatment. While conservative measures should be discussed, geriatric patients can also be offered surgery, as the available treatments are safe and effective in this group. Artificial urinary sphincter implantation is appropriate in those who can operate the device, though they should be followed to ensure they can continue to use the device over time. A suburethral sling can be safe and efficacious in those with milder incontinence and is not affected by mental or physical decline.

AIM: To develop a new practical classification of urinary incontinence (UI) in men based on clinical features and disease severity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Botkin classification MI-CRONS is a system based on clinical features of patients and the degree of UI. Clinical assessment of the degree of UI is based on urination frequency, the ratio of spontaneous and involuntary urine output, the use of absorbent underwear, the level of physical efforts causing urine loss, and nocturia. The system uses five capital Russian or Latin letters: MI (Male Incontinentce) - C (cancer), R (radiation), O (o…
