[Uveitis-associated HLA class 1 histocompatibility antigens].

AIM: to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic significance of HLA class 1 histocompatibility antigens in the development of anterior uveitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 137 patients with anterior uveitis followed up at the Research Institute of Eye Diseases in 2009-2016 were tested for HLA antigens (A and B loci). The average patient's age was 29±12.4 years. All patients underwent a thorough medical interview with clinical and laboratory assessment. In case of suspected association with systemic disease, the patients were referred for consultation at the V.A. Nasonova Research Institut…

HLA-B27 Anterior Uveitis: Immunology and Immunopathology.

Acute anterior uveitis (AAU) is the commonest type of uveitis and HLA-B27 AAU is the most frequently recognized type of acute anterior uveitis and anterior uveitis overall. Recent evidence indicates that acute anterior uveitis is a heterogenous disease, is polygenic and is frequently associated with the spondyloarthropathies (SpA). Studies of patients with AAU and animal models of disease indicate a role for innate immunity, the IL-23 cytokine pathway and exogenous factors, in the pathogenesis of both SpA and acute anterior uveitis. Recently described genetic associations cluster around immuno…

Autoimmune uveitis: clinical, pathogenetic, and therapeutic features.

Autoimmune uveitis (AU), an inflammatory non-infectious process of the vascular layer of the eye, can lead to visual impairment and, in the absence of a timely diagnosis and suitable therapy, can even result in total blindness. The majority of AU cases are idiopathic, whereas fewer than 20 % are associated with systemic diseases. The clinical severity of AU depends on whether the anterior, intermediate, or posterior part of the uvea is involved and may range from almost asymptomatic to rapidly sight-threatening forms. Race, genetic background, and environmental factors can also influence the c…

Noninfectious immune-mediated uveitis and ocular inflammation.

Noninfectious uveitis encompasses a diverse group of ocular inflammatory disorders that share an underlying immune etiology and may be associated with systemic disease or confined primarily to the eye. Uveitis is commonly classified by anatomical location of inflammation into anterior, intermediate, posterior, and panuveitis. The treatment of noninfectious uveitis consists of corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents, and surgically placed steroid implants. We review the epidemiology, immunopathology, and clinical features of several noninfectious immune-mediated uveitides, including HLA-B27 a…

Postirradiation periocular granuloma faciale associated with uveitis.

Granuloma faciale is a rare dermatopathologic condition that presents as brown-red plaques, nodules, or papules primarily on the face, with the potential for extrafacial and mucous membrane involvement. A case of an 83-year-old woman with periocular granuloma faciale accompanied by a marked anterior uveitis is presented; an association of periocular granuloma faciale with anterior uveitis has not been previously reported.

Controversies in juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis.

Abstract Juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis (JIAU) accounts for a sizable proportion of uveitis cases in children and is an important cause of ocular morbidity in uveitis patients in this age group. The authors present the results of a survey conducted to obtain a better understanding of the current views and practices of ophthalmologists involved in the care of children with JIAU. A detailed questionnaire consisting of 54 questions addressing epidemiology, diagnosis, and therapy of JIAU was distributed to 67 uveitis specialists. The responses from 37 completed questionnaires wer…

Equine recurrent uveitis: classification, etiology, and pathogenesis.

Equine recurrent uveitis is a cyclical disease that affects the eye and often leads to high management costs and unfavorable results, such as blindness. Research has improved understanding of the roles of various etiologies, especially leptospirosis, in initiating and perpetuating the pathogenesis of equine recurrent uveitis. Research has also led to the discovery that specific breeds and horses with specific coat color patterns may be predisposed to developing recurrent uveitis.

Recurrent anterior uveitis in Henoch Schonlein's vasculitis.

Uveitis is an important component of many rheumatic diseases. The main causes of recurrent uveitis are seronegative spondylarthropathies and Behçet's disease. We describe a rare case of Henoch Schönlein vasculitis (HSV) along with multiple recurrences of acute anterior uveitis. In cases of skin rash and recurrent anterior uveitis, HSV should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

[Infectious uveitis in infancy: borreliosis, tuberculosis, lues].

Infectious uveitis caused by Borrelia, tuberculosis or syphilis is a rare condition, even in childhood. Because these diseases can be treated successfully, knowledge of their diagnosis and therapy is highly important. The clinical aspects vary from simple conjunctivitis to endophthalmitis or neuro-ophthalmological diseases. The diagnosis of and therapy for borreliosis depend on the stage of the disease. The involvement of different organ systems or positive indirect tests (tuberculin skin test, interferon gamma assays) are important factors in the diagnosis of tuberculosis as the cause of a uv…

Syphilitic posterior uveitis: correlative findings and significance.

Twenty-one patients with syphilitic posterior uveitis were investigated retrospectively to study the disease spectrum, associations with neurosyphilis, and therapeutic implications. Ophthalmologic manifestations of syphilitic posterior uveitis are differentiated into acute and chronic uveitides. The several distinct acute uveitic syndromes are usually florid and are associated with early syphilis, with VDRL-positive syphilitic meningitis, and frequently with human immunodeficiency virus coinfection. The chronic posterior uveitides are often insidious, a manifestation of late syphilis, and asso…
