Intolerance of Uncertainty and Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Roles of Meaning in Life and Death Anxiety.

Uncertainty is an inevitable part of human life, yet its association with life satisfaction remains insufficiently understood. While previous research has linked intolerance of uncertainty (IoU) primarily to anxiety and distress, less attention has been given to the existential processes through which it may be associated with overall well-being. The present study examined whether meaning in life (MiL) and death anxiety mediate the association between IoU and life satisfaction. Participants were 485 adults (68.3% female) aged 18-63 years (M = 32.02, SD = 11.98). Using structural equation model

[The effects of long-term oxygen therapy on survey in patients with chronic respiratory failure].

Long-term (> or = 15 hours) oxygen therapy (LTOT) increases life-span and improves quality of life (QOL) in patients with chronic respiratory failure (CRF). However, in our clinical practice, we observed that very few patients are using oxygen therapy 15 hours or more. Furthermore, very few literatures about survival of non- or inadequate oxygen users were found. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of LTOT in patients with CRF. A total of 305 LTOT recommended patients with CRF in our clinic between 1996 and 2001 were found. A hundred and five patients with documented subject c

Validation and adaptation to Spanish of the quality-of-life questionnaire in patients with hemorrhoidal disease and anal fissure (HEMO-FISS-CdV).

INTRODUCTION: hemorrhoidal disease and anal fissure are the two most frequent entities within benign anal pathology, both of which have a negative impact on quality of life. To date, there is no specific questionnaire in Spanish to assess the impact on quality of life in patients suffering from these conditions. OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study was to validate a questionnaire in Spanish for this purpose, adapting it to our daily clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: the HEMO-FISS-Quality of Life Questionnaire (HEMO-FISS-CdV) is the Spanish version of the original HEMO-FISS-Quality of Life

Predicting short-term life expectancy of patients with end-stage gastric cancer using Onodera's prognostic nutritional index.

BACKGROUND: Although the Onodera's prognosis nutritional index (O-PNI) has been used to predict long-term life expectancy, its use to predict life expectancy within 12 weeks has not been discussed. In this study, we examined the usefulness of the O-PNI to predict short-term life expectancy in patients with end-stage gastric cancer. METHODS: Blood samples from 425 patients who underwent surgery for gastric cancer at Toho University Omori Hospital from January 2001 to the end of December 2018 were analyzed. In 184 of 425 patients, a complete set of four blood sampling data were available at 12,

Advances in Mitral Valve Repair for Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation: Philosophy, Technical Details, and Long-Term Results.

Degenerative mitral valve disease represents the most common cause of mitral regurgitation in industrialized countries. When left untreated, patients with severe degenerative mitral regurgitation show a poor clinical outcome. Conversely, a timely and appropriate correction provides a restored life expectancy and a good quality of life. Therefore, in this scenario, surgical mitral valve repair represents the gold standard of treatment. This review aims to analyze the indications, timing, and contemporary surgical techniques of mitral valve repair for degenerative mitral regurgitation. Moreover,

Research progress on perioperative prediction models for postoperative pancreatic fistula after pancreatic tumor surgery.

Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), as one of the most severe complications following pancreatic tumor surgery, is a major cause of poor postoperative prognosis and even early mortality in patients. Postoperative complications it triggers, such as intra-abdominal abscess and life-threatening hemorrhage, severely affect patients' prognosis and quality of life. Establishing a scientific, rigorous, and clinically practical prediction model for POPF holds significant guiding value for precise perioperative interventions. This article systematically reviews the research progress on risk factor

THE INTERNATIONAL IMPLICATIONS OF QUALITY-OF-LIFE POLICING AS PRACTICED IN NEW YORK CITY.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has made enforcement of laws against disorder and quality-of-life offenses a central part of their policing strategy. Concomitantly, New York City (NYC) experienced a renaissance in orderliness, cleanliness, tourism, real estate value, and crime reduction, although other problems such as poverty, unemployment, drug abuse, racial tensions and homelessness persist. This paper examines quality-of-life policing practices in NYC, describes the philosophical underpinnings, explores the critical response to the program and presents lessons of potential relev

Cefiderocol for treating severe aerobic Gram-negative bacterial infections: technology evaluation to inform a novel subscription-style payment model.

BACKGROUND: To limit the use of antimicrobials without disincentivising the development of novel antimicrobials, there is interest in establishing innovative models that fund antimicrobials based on an evaluation of their value as opposed to the volumes used. The aim of this project was to evaluate the population-level health benefit of cefiderocol in the NHS in England, for the treatment of severe aerobic Gram-negative bacterial infections when used within its licensed indications. The results were used to inform the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance in support of com

Problems Using Body Mass Index (BMI) to Assess Mortality.

There is increasing unease in the medical community about using the predictive value of the body measurement index (BMI) as a guide to an individual's current and future health. Elevated BMIs are evaluated by life and disability underwriters as part of a comprehensive review, but other than verifying overweight status, the predictive value of BMI on future morbidity and mortality is questionable until the BMI is >35, and several studies have shown better mortality in the "overweight" BMI 25-29.9 category than in the "normal" BMI 18.5-24.9 category. The goal of this treatise is to evaluate othe

A preliminary application of a haemophilia value framework to emerging therapies in haemophilia.

INTRODUCTION: Emergence of new therapies are anticipated to improve clinical outcomes and quality of life of persons with haemophilia. Challenges in conducting randomized clinical trials in rare diseases have resulted in a lack of direct head-to-head comparisons to support value-based decision-making between different treatments. METHODS: We conducted a literature review for new and emerging haemophilia A and B therapies (extended half-life [EHL] replacement factor, non-replacement therapies [NRT], and gene therapies [GT]) to identify differentiating patient-centred outcomes defined previousl

Changes in Fetal Hemoglobin in Very Preterm Infants Born Small for Gestational Age: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Background: Small-for-gestational-age (SGA) preterm infants are at higher risk for oxidative stress-related complications than appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) preterm infants. It has been proposed that HbF may be higher in SGA than in AGA infants due to fetal hypoxia. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare postnatal changes in HbF fractions in very preterm SGA and AGA infants and in subgroups of these patients who had been transfused with red blood cells (RBCs) or not. Methods: We studied 30 SGA and 60 AGA very preterm infants with a gestational age of 27.7 ± 1.6 and 27.9 ± 0.7 weeks,

The quality-of-life impacts and economic burden of X-linked retinitis pigmentosa caused by variants in RPGR.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the health and societal costs and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impacts of X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP) caused by RPGR. METHODS: Primary data were obtained from a clinical cohort of 9 patients with X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP) and 4 caregivers. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impacts for patients and carers are assessed using utility values derived from the Assessment of Quality of Life-8 Dimension (AQoL-8D) instrument. Lifetime costs associated with XLRP are estimated through microsimulation modelling. The model accounts for both societ

Health-related quality of life in patients with ankylosing spondylitis: a comprehensive review.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a complex systemic rheumatological disease which often causes severe disability and impaired quality of life (QoL). We searched the PubMed/MEDLINE electronic database for available literature on QoL and its predictors in patients with AS. Recent evidence indicates that AS patients have poorer QoL compared to the general population, but similar to that of patients with other rheumatological disorders. Disease activity is one of the most powerful predictors of QoL, however latest advances in pharmacological treatment (namely, anti-TNF-α) along with physical exercis

Half-lives of two types of rat homocytotropic antibodies in circulation and in the skin.

The half-lives of two classes of rat immunoglobulins with homocytotropic properties, i.e., IgE and IgG2a, in the circulating blood and in the skin were studied. The catabolism of both normal (reaginic) and pathological (myeloma) IgE proteins in circulation was found to be extremely rapid with a half-life of 12 h. In contrast, the half-life of IgE antibody in the homologous skin was calculated to be 7.4 days. On the other hand, the half-life of IgG2a in circulation was about 5 days regardless of normal or pathological origin. IgG2a protein was, however, rapidly cleared from the injected skin si
