Vestibular problems after cochlear implantation (CI) were explored by categorizing them according to clinical course and changes in objective vestibular function. The changes in vestibular function of 62 patients (66 ears) were analyzed and vestibular symptoms were divided into three categories by their time course and nature. Etiologies were determined by analyzing the symptoms in combination with changes in objective vestibular function, measured using the caloric and/or video head impulse test. Before surgery, vestibular function was normal in 31 cases (47.0 %), unilaterally hypofunctional

Velocity storage (VS), a brainstem function, extends the low-frequency response of the vestibular system. To better understand VS mechanisms and characteristics in humans, we analyzed retrospectively functional measures of gait, electrophysiological measures of vestibular function, and imaging studies in an attempt to determine clinical, electrophysiological, and anatomical correlates of abnormalities in VS. Two cohorts of patients referred to our Risk of Falls Assessment Clinic participated in this investigation. Group 1 (control) patients demonstrated normal caloric and rotary chair tests. G

CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that canal function is substantially preserved in subjects with active vertigo attacks as a result of Ménière's disease (MD). In these subjects, the head-thrust test (HTT) may not be as sensitive to canal dysfunction as traditional caloric testing. MD may differentially affect the low-frequency sensitivity of the canals.
OBJECTIVE: Caloric tests have traditionally been used to characterize semicircular canal function in vestibular disorders, including MD. The quantitative HTT provides an objective measurement of semicircular canal function in the frequency an

HYPOTHESIS: Delivery of math1 using an adenovector (Admath1.11D) results in vestibular hair cell regeneration and recovery of balance function in ototoxin-treated adult mice.
BACKGROUND: Loss of peripheral vestibular function is associated with disease processes such as vestibular neuronitis, aminoglycoside ototoxicity, and aging. Loss of vestibular hair cells is one of the mechanisms underlying balance dysfunction in all of these disorders. Currently, recovery from these diseases relies on central vestibular compensation rather than on local tissue recovery. Overexpression of the mammalian a

Given the potential interplay of psychological symptoms following pediatric concussion and vestibular dysfunction, we conducted a prospective cohort study of participants ages 8 to 19 ≤72 hours of injury from the emergency department to assess the association between motion sickness and outcomes. Participants completed visio-vestibular testing and symptom-based surveys at enrollment, with outcome assessment at 1 and 4 weeks post-injury. We enrolled 114 participants, 19 with motion sickness history, 17 with new motion sickness after injury. Although not statistically significant following Bonfe

The currently available evaluation methods for determining appropriate treatment strategies in patients with asymptomatic inner ear dysfunction are insufficient. Recently, we demonstrated the efficacy of 100-Hz sound stimulation for treating vestibular dysfunction in Meniere's disease. This case report presents the utility of 100-Hz sound stimulation as a new method for evaluating cases with asymptomatic vestibular dysfunction and their potential for recovery with early medical intervention. We evaluated the change in cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) amplitude before and a

Studying eye movements and vestibular function would provide insights into brain networks that are vulnerable in mitochondrial disorders. We sought eye movement and vestibular abnormalities in three Korean patients with a mitochondrial A3243G point mutation. The patients suffered from vertigo and imbalance during the stroke-like and seizure episodes from lesions involving the posterior cerebral cortex, which were accompanied by bilateral saccadic hypermetria and horizontal gaze-evoked nystagmus. Furthermore, two patients showed bilateral impairments of the vestibulo-ocular reflex during head i

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of the review is to value the incidence, patterns and temporal characteristics of hyperventilation-induced nystagmus (HVIN) in patients suffering from vestibular diseases, as well as its contribution to the differential diagnosis between vestibular neuritis and schwannoma of the eighth cranial nerve and its behavior in some central vestibular diseases.
RECENT FINDINGS: The hyperventilation test seems to be more useful than other bedside tests in detecting schwannoma of the eighth cranial nerve in the case of sudden monolateral hypacusia. The presence of an excitator

BACKGROUND: Currently, Ménière's disease is predominantly diagnosed through clinical criteria. Additional standard vestibular testing, such as nystagmography, can show variable responses. In the last decade, the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has shown to be of additive value in diagnosing Ménière's disease. In this study, the results of the ocular VEMP (oVEMP) in response to air-conducted sound will be discussed.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate possible changes of the oVEMP in a large group (n = 37) of patients with Ménière's disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 55 subjects witho

A complex vestibulologic examination of 131 patients with otitis media purulenta chronica (OMPC) was made. The patients were divided into groups and subgroups basing on the course of OMPC and presence or absence of subjective vestibular disorders. Vestibular function was assessed in various OMPC forms. Vestibular abnormalities were found in all the examinees. Therefore, all OMPC patients should be examined vestibulologically for early detection of initial, subclinical changes of the inner ear vestibular apparatus and decision on treatment policy.

OBJECTIVES: The current gold standard for diagnosis of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the Dix-Hallpike maneuver. However, because of fatigability, the Dix-Hallpike is often falsely normal. The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of vestibular autorotation testing in the diagnosis of BPPV.
METHODS: The charts of 210 patients at a tertiary referral center for vertiginous disorders were reviewed. All patients underwent clinical evaluation, Dix-Hallpike testing, audiometry, electronystagmography, and vestibular autorotation testing. The vestibular autorotation resu
