The goal of the present study was to investigate aspects of the central organization of the neurons belonging to the octavolateralis efferent system of amphibians. The perikarya of three genera, Pleurodeles, Xenopus, and Discoglossus, were located in the brainstem by applying retrograde tracers to the appropriate cranial nerves and choline acetyltransferase immunohistochemistry was used to identify cholinergic neurons. The efferent neurons supplying lateral line (Pleurodeles, Xenopus) and labyrinthine (Pleurodeles, Xenopus, and Discoglossus) end organs were found to intermingle in a single oct

Studying eye movements and vestibular function would provide insights into brain networks that are vulnerable in mitochondrial disorders. We sought eye movement and vestibular abnormalities in three Korean patients with a mitochondrial A3243G point mutation. The patients suffered from vertigo and imbalance during the stroke-like and seizure episodes from lesions involving the posterior cerebral cortex, which were accompanied by bilateral saccadic hypermetria and horizontal gaze-evoked nystagmus. Furthermore, two patients showed bilateral impairments of the vestibulo-ocular reflex during head i

In certain long-lasting cases of Menière's disease with recurrent attacks, despite of saccotomy, the removal of the vestibular ganglion is the only procedure that relieves vertigo. During ganglionectomy of this group of patients all fresh tissues gotten and gathered from operation are frozen immediately and preserved for immunohistochemical assay with direct and indirect incubations. The positive findings such as ASMA+, AEA+ and ANA+ in tissues of patient's own as well as in control tissues further confirmed the results previously reported by us. The immune-complex mediated arteriolar and capi

The temporal bones from a 55-year-old woman with deafness and dizzy spells caused by a right-sided acoustic neurinoma were examined by the techniques of microdissection, surface preparations, and celloidin sections. Sensorineural degeneration was present in the basal end of the right cochlea but was not severe enough to explain the deafness. The compression of the cochlear nerve by the tumor was postulated to have caused deafness by injury to neurons adjacent and central to the tumor. There was profound degeneration of the vestibular nerve and sensory cells. A gelatinous material occluded the

A new technique for the autoradiographic measurement of regional cerebral glucose consumption using tracer amounts of radioactive 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) was employed to study the effects of vestibular inputs on local cerebral glucose metabolism. Rats rotated in the vertical plane showed localized increases of glucose utilization in the vestibular nuclei and several areas of the cerebellum: flocculus, nodulus, ventral uvula, and accessory paraflocculus. The changes in the cerebellum occurred both in the neuronal perikarya-rich granular layer and the neuropil-rich molecular layer. Differential ch

BACKGROUND: Walking on an incline demands specific neuronal control because the vestibular system may alter gait patterns to maintain balance with respect to self-orientation to gravity. A previous study confirms the aforementioned hypothesis that walking on inclines with bilateral vestibular disruptions altered spatial-temporal gait parameters in anterior-posterior and vertical directions. This study extended the current knowledge to investigate bilateral mastoid vibration's effect on the Margin of Stability (MoS) while walking on inclines.
METHODS: Eighteen healthy young adults participated

An ongoing EU Horizon 2020 Project called BionicVEST is investigating the effect of constant electrical stimulation (ES) of the inferior vestibular nerve in patients with bilateral vestibular dysfunction (BVD). The evidence is that constant ES results in improved postural stability and gait performance, and so the question of central importance concerns how constant ES of mainly saccular afferents in these BVD patients could cause this improved performance. We suggest that the constant ES substitutes for the absent saccular neural input to the vestibular nuclei and the cerebellum in these BVD

The Cogan syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis and audiovestibular symptoms. Profound sensorineural hearing loss has been reported in approximately half of the patients with the Cogan syndrome resulting in candidacy for cochlear implantation in some patients. The current study is the first histopathologic report on the temporal bones of a patient with the Cogan syndrome who during life underwent bilateral cochlear implantation. Preoperative MRI revealed tissue with high density in the basal turns of both cochleae and both vestibular systems consiste

Vestibular migraine is among the commonest causes of episodic vertigo. Chronically, patients with vestibular migraine develop abnormal responsiveness to both vestibular and visual stimuli characterized by heightened self-motion sensitivity and visually-induced dizziness. Yet, the neural mechanisms mediating such symptoms remain unknown. We postulate that such symptoms are attributable to impaired visuo-vestibular cortical interactions, which in turn disrupts normal vestibular function. To assess this, we investigated whether prolonged, full-field visual motion exposure, which has been previous

Symptomatic recovery after acute vestibular neuritis (VN) is variable, with around 50% of patients reporting long term vestibular symptoms; hence, it is essential to identify factors related to poor clinical outcome. Here we investigated whether excessive reliance on visual input for spatial orientation (visual dependence) was associated with long term vestibular symptoms following acute VN. Twenty-eight patients with VN and 25 normal control subjects were included. Patients were enrolled at least 6 months after acute illness. Recovery status was not a criterion for study entry, allowing recru

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) appear to represent a new and promising technique for the assessment of vestibulospinal reflex function. The primary aims of the study described in this article were (1) to record VEMPs in normal volunteers using available equipment and to establish a range of norms of VEMP parameter values (latency, amplitude); (2) to confirm the saccular origin of VEMPs; (3) to assess the diagnostic significance of VEMPs; and (4) to evaluate the usefulness of VEMPs in monitoring therapeutic results. The study population consisted of 252 patients representing vari

Investigation of the vestibulo-ocular system of the squirrel monkey was reviewed in consideration of space motion sickness (SMS), or which is recently more often termed as space adaptation syndrome (SAS). Since the first launching of the space satellite, Sputnik [correction of Sputonik] in October 1957, many experiments were carried out in biological and medical fields. A various kind of creatures were used as experimental models from protozoa to human beings. Rats and monkeys are most favorite animals, particularly the non-human primate seems to be the one, because of its phylogenetic relativ

Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) multidimensional parameters-namely vestibulo‑ocular reflex (VOR) gain, gain asymmetry (GA), and compensatory saccades (CS)-are core indicators for assessing peripheral vestibular dysfunction. The combined use of vHIT and caloric testing facilitates differential diagnosis of various vertigo syndromes. In this retrospective study, 310 adult patients with unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders were enrolled, comprising 170 cases of Ménière's disease (MD), 110 cases of sudden sensorineural hearing loss accompanied by vertigo (SSHL‑V), and 30 cases of vestibular n
