Effect of four-month vertical whole body vibration on performance and balance.

PURPOSE: This randomized controlled study was designed to investigate the effects of a 4-month whole body vibration-intervention on muscle performance and body balance in young, healthy, nonathletic adults. METHODS: Fifty-six volunteers (21 men and 35 women, aged 19-38 yr) were randomized to either the vibration group or control group. The vibration-intervention consisted of a 4-month whole body vibration training (4 min.d(-1), 3-5 times a week) employed by standing on a vertically vibrating platform. Five performance tests (vertical jump, isometric extension strength of the lower extremities…

Clinical assessment of musculoskeletal disorders in workers exposed to hand-arm vibration.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical assessment of musculoskeletal disorders among vibration-exposed workers and to review the experimental and epidemiological studies of the effects of vibration on the musculoskeletal system of the upper limbs. METHODS: A total of 212 references in English was found in Pub Med for the years 1980-2000 that dealt with clinical assessment. Many of these references were reviews and few were original research dealing with test performance in diagnostic procedures. RESULTS: The reported effects on bone are osteoporosis and cysts in the hands. Experiments have sho…

Vibration-induced hand problems: role of the peripheral nerves in the pathophysiology.

A substantial number of people who are exposed to vibrating hand-held tools develop vasospastic and sensorineural symptoms that may seriously affect the ability to work. Apart from the discomfort of the disease itself, this leads to socioeconomic problems for the patients and high costs for the society. The diagnosis of the neurological symptoms is sometimes difficult and may be misinterpreted as a nerve compressive disorder such as carpal tunnel syndrome, which may also develop. This review summarises our available knowledge about the pathophysiology of the neurological dysfunction with refer

Diminished regional cerebral blood flow response to vibration in patients with blepharospasm.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with blepharospasm have abnormal sensorimotor processing similar to patients with writer's cramp. BACKGROUND: Blepharospasm is a focal dystonia manifest by involuntary, excessive blinking and squeezing of the eyes. Altered sensorimotor processing may contribute to the development of dystonic movements. Previously the authors demonstrated decreased vibration-induced cortical blood flow responses in hand primary sensorimotor area (PSA) in patients with hand dystonia. METHODS: In this prospective, case-control study, seven patients with blepharospasm wer…

Limitation of small-solute exchange across the visceral peritoneum: effects of vibration.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the importance of the peritoneal membrane diffusion resistances to small solutes prevailing outside the capillaries in the visceral versus the parietal peritoneum during acute peritoneal dialysis (PD). DESIGN: Experimental study in anesthetized Wistar rats undergoing PD in a single exchange (120 min) using 1.36% Dianeal as dialysis fluid. Vibration, using a standard laboratory shaker at 10 Hz, was used to induce dialysate mixing and reduce the impact of "unstirred layers" in intact and eviscerated rats. Nonvibrated rats served as controls. MEASUREMENTS: The mass transf…

Postural responses to vibration of neck muscles in patients with idiopathic torticollis.

Vibration of the dorsal muscles of the neck, simulating lengthening, in standing man causes a visible forwards tilt of the body shown on posturography as a tonic sagittal sway deviation. According to the theory that posture is organized with respect to a 'body schema' this deviation is a result of an interpretation of the concurrent neck afferent and vestibular signals. Considering the hypothesis that neck afferent signals may be misinterpreted in patients with spasmodic torticollis (ST) causing abnormal postural responses, we recorded body sway induced by unilateral dorsal neck muscle vibrati…

Different acute effects of single-axis and multi-axis hand-arm vibration.

Under laboratory conditions the effects of single-axis and multi-axis hand-arm vibration exposure on several strain parameters were tested in up to 20 male subjects. As parameters of these acute effects, the biodynamic vibration behavior of the hand-arm system, the electrical activity of the most affected muscle groups, the skin temperature, the vibration sensitivity of the fingertips, and the subjective vibration sensation were measured. When comparing simulated three-axis vibration exposure with single-axis vibration exposure, synergistic effects in the form of an increasing reaction could b…

Effect of vibration on antagonist muscle coactivation during progressive fatigue in humans.

1. Biceps femoris antagonist coactivation increases during progressive fatigue. Our purpose was to determine if the mechanism that increases coactivation during fatigue is susceptible to vibration. Vibration drives alpha-motoneurons via the Ia loop, producing force without descending motor drive, and thus uncoupling antagonist and agonist activation. Evidence that vibration increases coactivation disproportionately from its 'common drive' would suggest the possibility that some of the effects of fatigue are mediated through a segmental reflex loop. 2. Ten male subjects performed repeated maxim…

Involvement of endothelin in peripheral circulatory change induced by hand-arm vibration.

Physiologic mechanisms involving local vasoregulating factor, endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) and endothelium-derived constricting factors (EDCF) have been postulated to play a role in VWF. Recent evidence that endothelin is a potent vasoconstrictor peptide indicates that it may play a role in vasoregulation during vibration exposure through the local actions of EDRF or EDCF. Therefore, we examined the effects of grasping (50 N) and hand-arm vibration with an unweighted acceleration of 50 m/s2 rms at a frequency of 120 Hz in the direction of X-axis on digital blood flow (DBF) and on…

Vibration, sonic and ultrasonic wave propagation analysis for the detection of osteoporosis.

The feasibility of vibration analysis and wave propagation analysis for the detection of osteoporosis is discussed. The relationship between the resonant frequencies, obtained by vibration analysis, and geometrical and material properties of long bones is found using a simple beam model. This relationship was verified experimentally on 142 excised bones. In vitro measurements for the detection of osteoporosis were performed on excised bones. Using a specific protocol for vibration and ultrasound measurements, a population of osteoporotic patients and age-matched controls were measured. From th…

Middle ear transmission disorders--tympanic membrane vibration analysis by laser-Doppler-vibrometry.

Laser-Doppler-vibrometry is a useful method to measure vibrations of the tympanic membrane. It is suitable to objectively diagnose the middle ear. In comparison to tympanometry, laser-Doppler-vibrometry has greater sensitivity. Temporal bone specimens were specially prepared to simulate middle ear disorders like middle ear effusion, fixation of the malleus head, fixation of the stapes footplate and removal of the incus. A correlation between the displacement function of the umbo and the experimentally produced middle ear disorders could be demonstrated. For the first time it was possible to me…

The effectiveness of grip bands in reducing racquet vibration transfer and slipping.

The effectiveness of cushion grip bands in reducing impact shock and vibration transfer, and slipping in tennis racquets has been investigated. The results also apply, in principle, to badminton and squash racquets, and to golf clubs. An artificial arm (manusimulator) replicating the structure and all the important properties of the real human arm (shoulder, upper- and forearm, hand, soft tissue- and muscle simulators, etc.) was used together with a standard tennis racquet for the investigation. Laser beams were employed for precision adjustment of the spatial racquet position and the ball imp…

Ultrastructural changes of the peripheral nerve induced by vibration: an experimental study.

To investigate the effects of vibration on the peripheral nerves, rabbits were exposed to vibration of 60 cycles/s frequency with 0.35 mm amplitude (acceleration: 51 m/s2) for two hours daily. After 150, 250, 450, and 600 hours vibration, thin sections of the saphenous and median nerves were examined under the electron microscope. Vibration was found to induce the following changes: (1) disruption of the myelin sheath and constriction of the axon, (2) accumulation of vacuoles in the nodal gap and paranodal region, (3) disorganisation of the paranodal end loops and detachment of the paranodal e…

Myoelectric reactions to ultra-low frequency and low-frequency whole body vibration.

5 healthy males were exposed to vertical sinusoidal whole body vibration (WBV) at 5 frequencies (F1 = 0.315 Hz, F2 = 0.63 Hz, F3 = 1.25 Hz, F4 = 2.5 Hz, F5 = 5.0 Hz) and 2 intensities (I1 = 1.2 ms-2 rms, F1-F5; I2 = 2.0 ms-2 rms, F2-F5). Erector spinae EMGs were derived at the levels of the first thoracic (T1) and third lumbar (L3) spinous processes, rectified and synchronously averaged, as were the accelerations of the seat and the head. WBV induced vibration-synchronous EMG activity (T1 and L3) which exceeded the activity without WBV during enhanced gravitation and decreased during lowered g…

Neuropharmacologic effects of vibration on the dorsal root ganglion. An animal model.

The neuropharmacologic effects of low frequency vibration on the dorsal root ganglion, a reported epidemiological cause of low-back pain, have only recently been described. This investigation was undertaken to validate the hypothesis that substance P and VIP, known to be produced in the dorsal root ganglion cell bodies, will be affected by low frequency vibration. Three New Zealand white rabbits were vibrated at discrete frequencies (2-10 Hz) to determine the resonant frequency of the rabbit spine. The resonating frequency was in the (3.5-5.0 Hz) range. The peak amplitude was at 4.5 Hz. Ten fe…

[Electrophysiologic study of reticulo-limbic relations during long-term exposure to vibration].

In chronic experiments on rabbits with implanted electrodes, the 3-month vibration induced phasic changes of the spontaneous electrical activity (EEG) of the dorsal hippocampus (area CA3), mesencephalic RF, some regions of the neocortex and of reticulo-cortical EPs. After the ist month of 3-hour daily vibration, an activation in the EEG and increase of the amplitude of reticulo-cortical EPs more obvious in the neocortex, were found. The 3-month vibration exerted an inhibitory influence on reticulo-cortical system as expressed by slow waves prevailing in the EEG of cortical and subcortical stru…

[Effects of local vibration exposure on the finger blood flow (author's transl)].

The purpose of the present study was to clarify the physiological response of peripheral blood vessels when some vibrational stimuli were given to five healthy young men (21-22) continuously and intermittently. The vasoreaction was observed on each subjects after the exposure to vibration at frequencies 18, 32, 64 and 125 Hz with acceleration level at 5 g (peak value). In the pulse wave height of left and right arms, a specified tendency was not found while a larger variation was observed. After continuous exposures, pulse wave propagation velocity at the left arm showed a decreasing tendency …

Collective vibrational resonance and mode selection in nonlinear resonator arrays.

This article investigates how a uniform high-frequency (HF) drive applied to each site of a weakly coupled discrete nonlinear resonator array can modulate the onsite natural stiffness and damping and thereby facilitate the active tunability of the nonlinear response and the phonon dispersion relation externally. Starting from a canonical model of parametrically excited van der Pol-Duffing chain of oscillators with nearest-neighbor coupling, a systematic two-widely separated time scale expansion (Direct Partition of Motion) has been employed, in the backdrop of Blekhman's perturbation scheme. Vibrational Spectroscopy of Ionic Liquids Electrochemically Intercalated into Multilayer Graphene.

We report insights into the reversible electrochemical intercalation of ionic liquids into multilayer graphene (MLG) using attenuated total … this poorly understood intercalation. We observe a blue-shift of up to 21.2 cm-1 in several [TFSI-] vibrational modes, attributed to mechanical compression within the confined graphene layers and/or ion-ion interactions. Additionally, an infrared peak emerges at 1384 cm-1, corresponding to the symmetric bending mode of methyl (-CH3) groups, whose appearance …
