A preliminary version of a computerized naming test for preschool children with language impairment.

The most prevailing hypothesis regarding mechanisms behind specific language impairment today is the hypothesis of general limitations of pr … f becoming a processing dependent measure of naming and a necessary complement to the assessment of vocabulary skills in children with language impairment.

Fine motor skills at preschool age and later academic skills: an indirect-effects analysis involving executive function in high-altitude Tibetan preschoolers.

Fine motor skills are associated with later academic development, but the role of executive function in this association remains insufficien … y academic skills, with the latter specified as a latent factor indicated by mathematics, receptive vocabulary, and expressive vocabulary. T1 fine motor skills were positively associated with T2 executive function (β = 0.121, p = 0.016), and T2 executive function was positively associated with T2 early academic skills (β = 0.439, p < 0.001). Learning disability identification in residential schools for deaf students.

Identifying specific learning disabilities in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students presents unique challenges due to various factors, including language access. This study utilized data from 810 students enrolled in schools for the deaf to examine the influence of gender, educational level, signing status, and vocabulary knowledge on specific learning disability identification or suspicion. The analysis revealed that male students, those in middle school, and nonnative signers are more likely to be suspected of or identified with specific learning disabilities. These findings emphasize the …

Dyslexia: advances in clinical and imaging studies.

The aim of this report is to describe the characteristics of Japanese dyslexia, and to demonstrate several of our studies about the extraction of these characteristic and their neurophysiological and neuroimaging abnormalities, as well as advanced studies of phonological awareness and the underlying neural substrate. Based on these results, we have proposed a 2-step approach for remedial education (e-learning web site: http://www.dyslexia-koeda.jp/). The first step is decoding, which decreases reading errors, and the second is vocabulary learning, which improves reading fluency. This 2-step ap…

Reading comprehension: a language intervention target from early childhood through adolescence.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in helping children and adolescents with language impairments to construct meaning from spoken and written language. They work in collaboration with other professionals and families to provide the optimal learning experiences and to introduce strategies for seeking meaning and monitoring understanding. This article describes language intervention techniques to enhance reading comprehension, including the development and enhancement of background knowledge and schemata, vocabulary, knowledge of text structure, and strategy use. The disc…

Microsynt: Exploring the syntax of EEG microstates.

Microstates represent electroencephalographic (EEG) activity as a sequence of switching, transient, metastable states. Growing evidence suggests the useful information on brain states is to be found in the higher-order temporal structure of these sequences. Instead of focusing on transition probabilities, here we propose "Microsynt", a method designed to highlight higher-order interactions that form a preliminary step towards understanding the syntax of microstate sequences of any length and complexity. Microsynt extracts an optimal vocabulary of "words" based on the length and complexity of t…

Back from the sideline, but back to baseline? A pediatric case study examining neuropsychological functioning after sustaining multiple sport-related concussions.

Most individuals recover quickly from a concussion; however, youth who sustain multiple concussions may be at risk for long-term cognitive impairments. This case study examines the neuropsychological performance of a 13-year-old malewith five head injuries. After his first concussion during study participation (fourth injury overall), several improvements were observed, likely due to practice effects, yet after sustaining another concussion <2 years later, declines were observed in visuoconstruction, verbal memory, and intellectual functioning. Across serial re-evaluation, his vocabulary knowle…

Writing, Asperger syndrome and theory of mind.

This research compared the written compositions of 16 adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders and 16 neurotypical control participants, and examined the influence of theory of mind on their writing. Participants ranging in age from 17 years to 42 years, matched on Vocabulary subtest scores from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (1997), completed the Social Attribution Task and wrote an expository and a narrative text. Texts were assessed on 18 variables representing quality, mechanics, and length. It was found that adults with HFASD wrote lower quality narrative and exposito…

Tip-of-the-tongue and word retrieval deficits in dyslexia.

Tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) responses on a picture-naming task were used to test the hypothesis that dyslexia involves phonological, but not semantic, processing deficits. Participants included 16 children with dyslexia and 31 control children between 8 and 10 years of age who did not differ in receptive vocabulary. As hypothesized, children with dyslexia demonstrated more TOTs and proportionally more errors in the phonological, but not semantic, step of word retrieval. Longer and low-frequency words also prompted more TOTs. The groups did not differ in phonological errors on a follow-up recogniti…
