Effects of Whistling Compared with Buzzy Device During Blood Sampling on Pain and Fear in Children's Emergency Department.

Blood sampling from a peripheral vein in children can be significant. Pediatric nurses should be able to use the techniques which decrease the pain and fear duration of the blood sampling. This research studied the effect of vibration bee and whistling (concentrate on breathing) blood sampling on pain and fear in the children's emergency. In this randomized clinical trial study, 120 children ages 3-6 years referred to a pediatric ward in Najaf, Iraq, using Random Blocking Method, were divided into three groups; vibration bee, whistling, and control group. A musical vibration bee, with the cold

Evidence from sperm whale clans of symbolic marking in non-human cultures.

Culture, a pillar of the remarkable ecological success of humans, is increasingly recognized as a powerful force structuring nonhuman animal populations. A key gap between these two types of culture is quantitative evidence of symbolic markers-seemingly arbitrary traits that function as reliable indicators of cultural group membership to conspecifics. Using acoustic data collected from 23 Pacific Ocean locations, we provide quantitative evidence that certain sperm whale acoustic signals exhibit spatial patterns consistent with a symbolic marker function. Culture segments sperm whale population

Changes in whistle parameters of two common bottlenose dolphin ecotypes as a result of the physical presence of the research vessel.

In the presence of vessels, dolphins have been found to change their habitat, behavior, group composition and whistle repertoire. The modification of the whistle parameters is generally considered to be a response to the engine noise. Little is known about the impact of the physical presence of vessels on dolphin acoustics. Whistle parameters of the coastal and oceanic ecotypes of common bottlenose dolphins in La Paz Bay, Mexico, were measured after the approach of the research vessel and its engine shutdown. Recordings of 10 min were made immediately after turning off the engine. For analysis

Deafening-induced rapid changes to spine synaptic connectivity in the adult avian vocal basal ganglia.

The basal ganglia have been implicated in auditory-dependent vocal learning and plasticity in human and songbirds, but the underlying neural phenotype remains to be clarified. Here, using confocal imaging and three-dimensional electron microscopy, we investigated striatal structural plasticity in response to hearing loss in Area X, the avian vocal basal ganglia, in adult male zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). We observed a rapid elongation of dendritic spines, by approximately 13%, by day 3 after deafening, and a considerable increase in spine synapse density, by approximately 61%, by day 14

Higher fundamental frequency in bonobos is explained by larynx morphology.

Acoustic signals, shaped by natural and sexual selection, reveal ecological and social selection pressures [1]. Examining acoustic signals together with morphology can be particularly revealing. But this approach has rarely been applied to primates, where clues to the evolutionary trajectory of human communication may be found. Across vertebrate species, there is a close relationship between body size and acoustic parameters, such as formant dispersion and fundamental frequency (f0). Deviations from this acoustic allometry usually produce calls with a lower f0 than expected for a given body si

Unstable neurons underlie a stable learned behavior.

Motor skills can be maintained for decades, but the biological basis of this memory persistence remains largely unknown. The zebra finch, for example, sings a highly stereotyped song that is stable for years, but it is not known whether the precise neural patterns underlying song are stable or shift from day to day. Here we demonstrate that the population of projection neurons coding for song in the premotor nucleus, HVC, change from day to day. The most dramatic shifts occur over intervals of sleep. In contrast to the transient participation of excitatory neurons, ensemble measurements domina

Hormonal acceleration of song development illuminates motor control mechanism in canaries.

In songbirds, the ontogeny of singing behavior shows strong parallels with human speech learning. As in humans, development of learned vocal behavior requires exposure to an acoustic model of species-typical vocalizations, and, subsequently, a sensorimotor practice period after which the vocalization is produced in a stereotyped manner. This requires mastering motor instructions driving the vocal organ and the respiratory system. Recently, it was shown that, in the case of canaries (Serinus canaria), the diverse syllables, constituting the song, are generated with air sac pressure patterns wit

Dynamics of crowing development in the domestic Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Species-specific behaviours gradually emerge, via incomplete patterns, to the final complete adult form. A classical example is birdsong, a learned behaviour ideally suited for studying the neural and molecular substrates of vocal learning. Young songbirds gradually transform primitive unstructured vocalizations (subsong, akin to human babbling) into complex, stereotyped sequences of syllables that constitute adult song. In comparison with birdsong, territorial and mating calls of vocal non-learner species are thought to exhibit little change during development. We revisited this issue using t

Autoradiographic localization of progestin-concentrating cells in the brain of the zebra finch.

The production of song in passerine birds is under the control of steroid hormones, and brain regions involved in song production have been shown to contain androgen and/or estrogen receptors. Studies to date, however, have not considered the possible role of progestins in this behavior. As one approach to this question, the autoradiographic method was used to investigate the distribution of progestin-concentrating cells in the brain of the adult male zebra finch (Poephila guttata) after injection of the radiolabeled synthetic progestin [17 alpha-methyl-3H]-promegestone. In the telencephalon,

Vocalization in juvenile crocodilians.

Evidence is presented that the grunts and distress calls of juvenile alligators (Alligator mississipiensis) are examples of graded calls, which are given in different form depending largely on contest. Representative sonagrams of the distress calls of three other species of crocodilians (Caiman crocodilus, Crocodylus niloticus, and Crocodylus siamensis) are presented and compared with sonagrams of alligator distress calls. These findings are discussed in light of current knowledge of the bioacoustics of other vertebrates.

Innervation of the syrinx of the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).

In songbirds, the learning and maintenance of song is dependent on auditory feedback, but little is known about the presence or role of other forms of sensory feedback. Here, we studied the innervation of the avian vocal organ, the syrinx, in the zebra finch. Using a combination of immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and neural tracing with subunit B of cholera toxin (CTB), we analysed the peripheral and central endings of the branch of the hypoglossal nerve that supplies the syrinx, the tracheosyringeal nerve. In the syringeal muscles, we show the presence of numerous choline acetyl tran

Functional Electrical Stimulation of the Feline Larynx With a Flexible Ribbon Electrode Array.

OBJECTIVES: Success of laryngeal reanimation through neurorrhaphy has been limited by synkinesis and preoperative muscle atrophy. The objective of this study was to investigate the use of epimysial electrode arrays as a means of delivering electrical stimulation to the posterior cricoarytenoid muscles in order to control laryngeal abduction. METHODS: Ribbon electrode arrays with 4 or 8 electrode contacts were used. Four cats underwent implantation of electrode arrays along the surface of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscles. The glottis was visualized with a 0° telescope while electrodes were

A computational tool for automated large-scale analysis and measurement of bird-song syntax.

We present computer software for automated, high throughput, quantitative syllable-level analysis of bird song syntax. The primary advantage of our tool is the ease and effectiveness it provides in quantifying syllable sequence and performing a comparison of syllable sequence from one day of singing with one or more other days of singing. The software utilizes the output of the Feature Batch module in Sound Analysis Pro (Tchernichovski et al., 2000) that can be used to measure the temporal and spectral features of each syllable produced during a day of singing. We use these measurements to ide

Intrinsic laryngeal muscle reinnervation using the muscle-nerve-muscle technique.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to investigate the muscle-nerve-muscle reinnervation technique in the larynx, in which a nerve conduit implanted into an innervated muscle conducts axonal sprouting into a denervated muscle while maintaining function of the donor muscle. METHODS: In this study, the muscle-nerve-muscle technique was used to direct superior laryngeal nerve axons to reinnervate intrinsic laryngeal muscles by implanting the recurrent laryngeal nerve stump into the cricothyroid muscle in 8 dogs. In 4 of the dogs, the recurrent laryngeal nerve trunk to the adductor muscles was d

Neurobiological mechanisms controlling aggression: preclinical developments for pharmacotherapeutic interventions.

Current pharmacotherapeutic approaches to the management of violent and aggressive behavior rely mostly on agents that act as receptor agonists or antagonists at subtypes of brain dopaminergic, GABAergic, and serotonergic receptors. Ethological experimental studies in animals have shown that drugs may modulate aggression by inhibiting motor activity, by distorting aggression-provoking or -inhibiting signals, by fragmenting behavioral sequences or temporal patterning, or by increasing the rate and intensity of aggressive acts. Evidence from animal studies points to large changes in selected bra

Effects of infraglottal implantation on voice production in type I thyroplasty: a computational study.

Type I thyroplasty (TT1) is one of the primary phonosurgical interventions for unilateral vocal fold paralysis. This study investigated the effects of infraglottal implant placement in TT1 on voice production using numerical simulations. The laryngeal and implant geometries were reconstructed from computed tomography scan of a canine larynx with a hand-carved Silastic implant. Fluid-structure interaction simulations, coupling the continuum finite element vocal fold and implant models with a one-dimensional Bernoulli-based glottal flow model, were conducted to evaluate vocal fold vibration acro

Histological evaluation of the equine larynx after unilateral laser-assisted ventriculocordectomy.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Trans-endoscopic laser surgery, such as unilateral laser-assisted ventriculocordectomy (LVC), has gained popularity in the treatment of RLN because a laryngotomy incision or general anaesthesia are not required. However, removal of the vocal fold and ventricle takes considerable laser energy and could cause collateral tissue damage, including injury to the adjacent laryngeal cartilages. OBJECTIVES: To document the histological effects of laser surgery on laryngeal tissues in horses that have undergone LVC for the treatment of laryngeal hemiplegia (LH). METHODS:

Muscle transfer for laryngeal paralysis. Restoration of inspiratory vocal cord abduction by phrenic-omohyoid transfer.

Omohyoid muscle transfer to the denervated posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA) was performed in three monkeys. The transposed omohyoid muscle was reinnervated by the phrenic nerve by performing nerve anastomosis prior to muscle transfer. The muscles were sutured over the denervated ipsilateral PCA muscle to allow for neurotization of the denervated PCA muscle in such a way as to reproduce the directional vector of PCA contraction, eg, to mimic the directional pull of the PCA muscle. The muscle flaps were found to be long enough to reach the contralateral PCA muscle, confirming that the techn
